When you prepare a release as an independent artist, it feels like there’s a never-ending list of things to do before the finish line. However, the list does end, and we’ve prepared it for you so you can jump in right away. Below is a guide that will walk you through the process step by step.

Of course, preparing a release means you have an album ready to go. Remember not to rush the creative process that’s necessary to get there. If you have any doubts or if you feel that something is missing in your album, you can turn to the mentors and sound specialists on Groover to get constructive feedback on your tracks.

1. Pick a budget and release date

Having an idea of a budget will help you strategize – how much will you be able to invest in promoting your album? Take into account artwork (photography, videography, editing), campaigns (Fb and IG ads, Groover, Spotify), digital distribution, merchandising,…

Remember that distribution services need time to get your music on every platform, so give yourself a minimum of 4 weeks before release to start preparations and submissions. The preferred day for music releases is Friday because that’s when the Billboard week resets, so streaming platforms do most of their algorithmic and editorial playlist updates (ex. New Music Friday) on that day.

We advise you to check that there are no major events or highly anticipated artist releases on your release day to avoid being overshadowed in the press and on social media.

2. Technical Checklist

These are necessary in order to make sure you won’t run into any technical or legal issues:

Note: We recommend having your album artwork (more in visual checklist) ready before submitting to digital distributors so as not to delay the process by having to add it later. For the full list of files and details distributors expect, see our guide on how to distribute your music.

Confirm royalty splits with collaborators (both publishing and masters splits)

so every producer, co-writer, and feature artist legally agrees on their percentage – just make sure to get written agreement from everyone – great article on it here

Add metadata to WAV & MP3 files

for proper classification and songwriter credit – here’s a guide on how to do it

Submit songs to digital distributor (at least 4 weeks before release)

so it’s available on all streaming platforms – here are the best ones for indie artists

Create a pre-save link and/or smartlink

so fans can save your tracks in advance and boost your streaming algorithm – do so through your distributor

Update your press kit and website with recent information, photos, and dates

so media/journalists and new fans will know more about you

Register the songs with your PRO (ASCAP, BMI, etc) and any other collection agencies

so you’re ready to receive royalties – full guide here

3. Promotional (Visual and Web) Checklist

Half the work in getting a release off the ground is all about promotion and exposure, so make sure to:

just in case it wasn’t done before (which we recommend)

Find golden snippet of single (or song you want to push most)

5. Post-Release Checklist

It’s not time to slack off yet:

check Spotify for Artists and digital distributor to understand who your listeners are – cater your content and ads to them

Conclusion

You’re ready to go! Remember that this is a very extensive guide and does not necessarily apply to every artist. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t have every single thing on these lists prepared. The point is to make sure you understand all the moving parts before diving in yourself.

Use these checklists in any way that is helpful to you, and personalize them. The smaller the task, the easier it is to achieve, so break things up if they’re too overwhelming! Good luck, you got this.

—

It’s completely normal to feel lost when promoting your music independently, and even more normal to stumble a couple times along the way. There’s no timeless rulebook for how managing a music career should go, as strategies, opinions, and algorithms are ever-changing. There are some rules of thumb to follow that can help you navigate the business, though.

The following is our shortlist of mistakes to avoid that will stay relevant for many many years to come, no matter the medium or format, along with solutions to help you prevent becoming a victim of these common pitfalls and turn them into strengths of yours instead.

1. Stop: Trying to Keep Up With Everyone Else’s Social Media Presence

Everyone will tell you that social media is king, but not everyone will remind you to participate only to the extent that makes sense for you.

It is certainly recommended to post as much as possible, but for those of you who aren’t Instagram or TikTok lovers to begin with, it may actually hurt you more to post just for the sake of posting than to be selective with your content.

The name of the social media game is authenticity, and it’s far from authentic to post a piece of content you don’t believe in. Those who are chronically online can sniff out forced promotion from a mile away, so instead of feeling obligated to post something just because, aim to post what you really want the world to see and what you are confident in.

Instead: Make a Plan that’s Realistic for You

If you struggle with coming up with ideas for posts and dread the looming “what should I post next” dilemma, the biggest hack is to go big before going home. Film one big long-form video (ideally a music video) that you can then chop up into a dozen snippets, BTS videos, teasers, etc. and slowly post over a long period of time. One filming day and one editing day can turn into months of content.

Another similar strategy is to plan one big media day to film/shoot everything during. Adding a photoshoot with a couple different outfits to the filming schedule is an excellent way to get both video and static content to work with in one day.

Doing it all at once will eliminate the need to 1) constantly come up with new ideas, and 2) have to create something on a deadline, which are usually the two biggest culprits of social media inactivity.

2. Stop: Automating Your Social Media Ads

Perhaps unsurprisingly, music and social platforms want you to pay for their services whenever possible, and ad campaigns are a great means to that end.

When you create an ad campaign to promote your music through Spotify or Instagram/Facebook (both run by Meta), they will offer to push it to a suggested target audience and number of users, making the process seemingly very simple. However, these target audiences are not actually very targeted – automated ad campaigns tend to push ad content to what seems like a large number of people, but a very small number of them will actually belong to the demographic that listens to your music.

As you track your ad campaign’s progress, you may not see the results you want (conversion from viewers to streams/follows) despite the ad having reached a large number of users. This will then prompt you to run another campaign and pay more money to the platform.

Instead: Choose Your Own Target Audience

You may think that platforms know best because they have all the data, but so do you! With a public or business account, almost every platform allows you to view your own insights to better understand your following (or listenership, on Spotify for Artists).

Use your insights to run more precise ad campaigns. You’ll not only be saving money, but you’ll also increase your chances of viewer-to-listener conversion. Begin by studying your following’s age, gender and location to best figure out where to push your content.

Your audience demographics will very likely differ by platform, so make sure to cater your ad content specifically to each. Allow your campaign a week or two to really take, and another week or two after its run to study how it’s influenced your media activity and listener trends.

3. Stop: Contacting Every Music Account, Outlet, and Industry Person

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Does it really make sense to be hitting up a music discovery Instagram page when you haven’t released your music to streaming services yet? Or emailing demos to a label when they haven’t been mixed and mastered?

By contacting someone in the music industry every time you come across their social media profile or email address, you may be setting yourself up to hurt your own feelings. When you don’t target people strategically, you’ll only increase your chances of getting a “no” because they may not work with the type of music you make or be offering the service you’re looking for. A pop radio station will not answer a hard rock pitch, and a folk blog will not accept hip hop artists. Save yourself the time and energy by being selective with your outreach.

Instead: Research and Create Personal Relationships

Do research on blogs, review sites, labels, music discovery accounts, promotion platforms, and anyone else you’d like that specializes in your genre of music. Make a list of who you’ll be contacting, and craft a message that is specific to them.

Whether you get what you’re looking for right away or not, building a relationship with the people you’re contacting is a great long term investment. They may ask you to send them new music whenever you have it, or alert them of an upcoming release in the future. You never know when your network is going to come in handy, so it’s worth taking the time to selectively contact those who you’d like to work with at some point and maintaining personal ties.

4. Stop: DMing Media Outlets

Though it may seem like the easiest communication channel, Instagram DMs are not the place to turn when you want to contact someone who can truly help you with your music.

Almost all media outlets, websites, companies, and big accounts have a social media manager or team behind them whose sole job is to run their social accounts. They are not journalists themselves, and receive far too many messages to relay every single one to the person you’re actually hoping to reach.

Above all, it’s simply unprofessional, as email is still the ruling means of communication in any big industry. Only use DMs to ask for the email address you should use to get in touch if you don’t already have it.

Instead: Pitch Where They Actually Read

Structurally, emails can do what DMs simply cannot, especially when it comes to links. Here’s what you should include in the perfect email:

The pitch: 3-4 sentences maximum to present your project, keeping it short and impactful, and using descriptive language when describing the music so your creative direction can be understood quickly.

The bio: 3 sentences introducing yourself as an artist, who your influences are, and what you’re currently doing.

Private links: SoundCloud, Untitled, or YouTube allow private link sharing, so include your music using one of these (not a streaming platform or file attachment).

Dates: Include the date of your upcoming release and shows if you have any.

Visuals: Include the link to a Dropbox that contains press photos or videos for outlets to use if they write about you.

Socials: Include your social media profile links so they can be visited and/or added elsewhere.

In terms of wording, be polite and professional. Being overly casual is frowned upon and will likely get ignored. Respectful messages have a much greater chance of getting a positive response.

Artists, in order to promote your music, there is one key component you must really nail: the music press release. A press release is the informative and attention-grabbing official statement sent by you/your team to media outlets to announce something they should be aware of.

The types of events that usually require a press release:

A new album

A concert or tour announcement

A collaboration with another artist

An achievement or milestone (award, # of Spotify streams, platinum album)

A film or documentary

The music industry media you’ll distribute to:

Music journalists

Bloggers

Influencers

Record Labels (sometimes)

By crafting and distributing information on a newsworthy event, you’ll not only spark the curiosity of the media, but also give them everything they need to then write about it themselves. If all goes well, your new music or upcoming gigs will get a press write up in respected publications in the industry.

It’s quite simple to write an effective press release, especially if you have guidelines. The following are some examples of official press releases by some of the greats. After that we’ll show you how to draft one yourself.

Would you like to get some press coverage for your next release? 👇

1. How to Structure Your Statement

As you can see, regardless of whether it’s to announce new music or a headline tour, press releases follow a very similar structure. They are very factual, provide all necessary information, and are to the point. Some releases are distributed by an artist’s record label, while others are posted on an artist’s website. The end goal remains the same: get people talking and excited.

When crafting your own press release, include the following in your statement:

Headline: include your name + the event being announced

Subheader: get a little more specific

Links to tickets, streaming, or video: use hyperlinks

2-3 body paragraphs: give context about the event

Extras: artwork and press photo download, quotes

Important Note: even if you are writing about yourself, press release writing always involves talking in the 3rd person. Public relations and announcements like these should sound like someone else writing about your career.

2. How to Write Your Press Release

Headline and Subheader

Headlines are most effective when their message is clear. Given the informative nature of press releases, this is particularly important. Avoid clickbait-y titles and go straight for the announcement, followed by specifics. For releases or tours, include the date of the drop or first day of ticket sales in the subheader, and for achievements, state the name of the project it was associated with.

Links to Tickets, Streaming, or Video

Almost all press release-worthy announcements will have a digital asset involved: you’ll notice that every example above used hyperlinks straight to them. Direct readers to a Spotify pre-save, a ticketing service, a music video, or anything relevant by providing links directly under the title. This makes it easier than sifting through the text.

Body Paragraphs

This is the place to be both informative and descriptive. You want to give as much context as you can without giving everything away. Use the “5 Ws” and explain the Who, What, Where, When, and Why of your announcement.

Just as you would be pitching a song to a playlist, describe your new music with great imagery to give readers an idea of what kind of mood and sentiment they should expect.

Who: State who took part in the writing and production of the new music (for releases), who directed the video (for music videos), or who you’re collaborating with

What: State the event

Where: State where the music was recorded, achievement was obtained, doc was filmed

When: State when the event is going to take place (release date, tour dates)

Why: State what inspired the music (for releases), or give history on career development (for achievements)

You can write these points in whatever order you feel reads best. Just make sure they do not exceed 3 paragraphs as music industry press releases are always under one page.

Artwork and Photo Downloads

Give media outlets and reporters the opportunity to use your headline and accompany it with professional images of your choice by providing them with a download link to the high quality assets (see Tate McRae’s press release).

Quotes

In publicity and online press, you’ll often find quotes by the artists included to make the statement feel more personal. Don’t be afraid to include a one or two sentence statement from the artist (presumably you) about your thoughts on the upcoming event and how exciting of a time it is.

3. What Your Press Release Should Look Like

There is no set rule for press release presentation or formatting. Record labels stick to the center-aligned, single photo option as you can see in the above examples, no matter the roster. Given that these are Billboard charting artists, we can’t deny that that format may just be the standard to follow! It is clearly simple and effective, which is the point of the statement. Opt for either cover art of your new single (Tate McRae), a final poster you’ll be using for touring (Billie Eilish), or a professional photo of yourself as the sole image on the release, and let the rest be text. It’ll do the job!

👉 Your press release is ready? Discover the full checklist of what you need to plan your next release

4. How to Distribute Your Press Release

As you’ve come to understand, these statements are digital, so they’re easy to distribute. If we take a page out of Sony or Universal’s books, it’s clear that publishing the release on your own website is an efficient way of hosting it somewhere everyone can see and visit. In terms of getting it to people who don’t already follow you, you can pitch it to the media outlets of your choice and provide them with the link. At Groover, there are more than 3,000 curators and music pros, including media outlets, bloggers, and influencers, to choose from that you can contact directly. If they don’t answer within a week, you get your credits back to use on someone else.

Email is also a great way to distribute your press release. Many media platforms have contact pages that provide this information, so send them a brief message followed by your press release. If you have a newsletter, you can send a press release to your fanbase to get them excited as well!

5. Be Prepared for Press

Remember that the music business is highly saturated and sometimes difficult to navigate because of it. Make it easier on everyone by being completely prepared:

Make sure to have your music on all streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, Deezer, Tidal, YouTube Music)

Make sure your song recordings are of excellent quality and have been mixed and mastered before being sent to your distribution service

Make sure you have sorted out the splits on your royalties with all parties involved before announcing any projects

If not everything has been sorted, that’s ok. Looking for artist management is wise when you feel like you’re in over your head. Songwriters and artists alike feel it necessary to build a team in order to get every aspect of their music career taken care of. Instead of dealing with the promotional, branding, marketing, media monitoring, and other administrative duties of your music career yourself, you can have others help you with everything, including writing a press release! When you feel ready for that step, you can connect with music managers on Groover.

Releasing a single is the first big step towards establishing a successful career in the music business. Turning your recordings into official releases and putting music on streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, or SoundCloud can seem complicated when you’re unfamiliar with the process, but here we’ve made it simple. All musicians follow a similar process and tweak it as they wish, so don’t worry if some things don’t apply to you. Take what is useful and run with it to the Billboard charts!

Here are 8 crucial tips from Groover to make your single release as effective as possible.

1. Choose the Right Song

If you’re coming out with a new album, the track you pick as your single must be a good representation of the rest of your project and be its figurehead. If you’re releasing a standalone single, choose a song of yours that will tease listeners with the direction you’re going with your music. If this is your first release, congrats!

For those who are primarily chasing streams and royalties, it’s wise to choose a song that sounds like it could do well on the radio. Across many genres, radio is where the most royalties are for songwriters, so having a catchy track can up your chances of getting airtime and a bigger paycheck.

2. Plan Your Release Date and Promotion

It is essential to plan in advance in order to have a clear vision of the marketing moves you’ll be implementing. First, plan your release date – this will allow you to work backwards in the rest of your planning. It’s recommended to give yourself at least 2 months to market your single and give your music distribution platform enough time to distribute your song to all online platforms. If you are using the waterfall strategy, for example, make sure to give yourself a significant margin of time between releases as well. This is only is you are releasing a bigger project such as a new album or debut album in its entirety later on.

Once you have your date, create a promotional schedule for when you’ll be announcing the single and encouraging followers to listen. Plan your IG posts, TikToks, Tweets, and content on any other platform so that you can stay organized and on time, avoiding delays and last minute changes. You can go as far as creating the content way ahead of time so it’s ready to go when the time comes! For a week-by-week timeline, the GYROstream release checklist covers what to prepare from eight weeks out to release day.

Note: It’s wise to avoid releasing around big events that garner a lot of social media attention such as public holidays, sporting events, and award shows.

Are you looking to get placed on Spotify playlists? ⬇️

3. Submit to Your Distributor

Your release can’t happen until you submit your new song for music distribution. The only way to get your music online and available on streaming services without a record label is by using online distributors such as CD Baby or Tunecore, which are very easy to use and great for independent artists. When you sign up and begin the submission process, you’ll be able to set a release date. They will often tell you the recommended amount of time to give yourself and them to distribute your song, so make sure to take their own timeline into account. Since you planned in advance, this shouldn’t be a problem. If you’re still weighing a distributor against a label deal, our guide on how music distribution works compares both options and what they cost.

Note: Your new song will not show up in upcoming releases on Spotify for Artists until it has been submitted for distribution! You will not be able to set up pre-saves or pitch to Spotify playlists until this is done.

4. Set Up a Pre-Save System

Create a pre-order/pre-save system for your song. Spotify loves the data and uses this to gauge how much anticipation your song is garnering, and fans will find your new song in their saved music upon release. This is a great way to play the algorithm and makes it easy for users to listen to your song when it comes out. This can usually be done through the distributor you used, but there are many other online services available to complete the process.

If you have over 5,000 active monthly listeners, you can also create a countdown page on Spotify which creates a banner that will show up on your artist page. This is a new feature and is designed to boost streams for the first week of a release, as well as build excitement in the run up.

5. Plan and Create All Your Visual Assets

Plan any and all visual assets ahead of time to relieve any stress. This can/should include:

A music video or lyric video

A canvas (short-form video) for Spotify

Cover/album art

Social media content

Announcement visual

BTS/”making of” footage

Reminders

Short form videos (can use canvas for example)

It is easier to create all of these than you think, and doesn’t require a big budget or team. Album art can be truly anything – an iPhone photo, an AI-generated image, a drawing of yours – that one’s easy! Footage is simple as well, as long as you have a phone. You can also collaborate with artists you like and have them create assets for you. This is a great way to get more eyes on your project as the artist will likely share the work on social media.

These visuals provide more attachment to your music and allow the listener to immerse themselves a little more in the universe of your musical project. It is also a certain proof of quality and shows that you provide consistent work and are dedicated to your craft, which goes beyond the music.

6. Tease on Social Media

To build anticipation, use social media as much as you can. Announce the release date of your single at least a few weeks in advance and stay active until the big day arrives. Post a variety of content across all channels (especially Instagram and TikTok) and cater the content to the platform. Instagram values high-quality, professional-looking imagery, while TikTok favors casual, candid, and consistent videos.

Keep fans on the edge of their seats by posting either a story, picture, or video at least every few days to remind them of the new release. You want them to be excited to listen to your song in its entirety, so tease your audience with snippets of the song and music video.

In order to promote effectively without being redundant and overdoing it, analyze your followers’ activity using Instagram insights to figure out the best times to post.

7. Pitch to Playlists

Getting placements in Spotify playlists greatly increases how many times a song is streamed, especially in the first couple weeks following release. This does wonders for the algorithm, as the data shows the platform that your song is doing well and therefore tries to push it to more listeners. Make sure to pitch your new song to the Spotify editorial team using Spotify for Artists (after you have submitted for distribution). You can find a walkthrough of how to pitch your music here!

8. Reach Out to the Media

How better to garner attention and publicity than to reach out to media outlets? Contact bloggers and online reviewers about your upcoming release and tell them why it’s special by writing a press release. This should include details about your single, the release date, previous music of yours, recent press shots they can use, links to your music and social media, and any accomplishments worth mentioning. Bonus points if you have an EPK to send them so they fully understand the music you make and what brand you’re promoting. Ideally, they’ll love your song and want to promote your music on their platform by writing about it and sharing it with their audience.

It’s not always easy to get answers from the press, which is why Groover has partnered with them. When you create a campaign, you can choose any media outlet you like and they will answer you within 7 days. If they don’t, you get your credits back to use on another curator! Find the industry professional that suits you (media outlet, blog, online radio, playlist, label, manager, publisher, booker, etc.) and give it a go.

To promote your single, send it to the media, labels, professionals of your choice on Groover, guaranteed returns!

A single in music is a standalone song that is typically released as a promotional tool for an album or artist. It is one of the most important formats for music release and serves as a way for musicians to generate buzz and gauge audience interest before releasing a full-length album.

In the past, singles were primarily released in physical formats such as vinyl records, CDs, or cassettes. However, with the advent of digital music and streaming services, singles are now primarily released as digital downloads or streamed online. This shift has allowed for easier accessibility and instant gratification for listeners.

Singles often have a specific release date and are accompanied by various marketing strategies. Record labels and musicians often promote singles through television appearances, radio airplay, music videos, and social media campaigns. The goal is to increase awareness and generate excitement around the artist and their upcoming album.

Musicians carefully select the single to represent their album, usually choosing a track that is catchy, representative of their sound, or has potential for widespread appeal. The lead single, or first single, provides listeners with a taste of what to expect from the full album. It helps to build anticipation and can significantly impact the success of an album. Billboard charts play a crucial role in ranking the popularity and success of singles. They track the number of downloads, streams, airplay, and purchases to determine the chart positions. The higher the position on the chart, the more exposure and recognition the single and artist gain. Achieving a top spot on charts such as the Billboard Hot 100 is a significant milestone for musicians.

Singles can encompass various music genres, including pop, rock, hip-hop, punk, folk, and more. They showcase the diversity of the music industry and cater to different tastes and preferences of listeners. Moreover, singles can be released by both major record labels and independent artists, allowing for a wide range of musical experiences.

Furthermore, singles often come with additional content to entice listeners. This can include music videos, remixes, acoustic versions, or bonus tracks. Artists may collaborate with other musicians or producers to create alternative versions of the single, further expanding their reach and appealing to different audiences.

From a songwriter’s perspective, singles provide opportunities for recognition and royalties. Musicians and composers earn income through royalties from the sales, streaming, and licensing of their singles. This revenue stream helps support their careers and allows them to continue creating new music.

In summary, a single in music is a standalone song released to promote an album or artist. It serves as a marketing tool, allowing musicians to generate excitement, gauge audience interest, and increase the visibility of their upcoming album. With the changing landscape of the music industry, singles are primarily released digitally and accompanied by various promotional strategies. They come in a variety of genres, and their success is often determined by chart rankings and audience reception. Singles play a vital role in the music industry, contributing to the overall success and sustainability of musicians and composers.

Recently, Alexandre contacted us announcing the production of the “Cosmopolitan Groover” EP that features songs from artists on the Milenar label and international artists discovered through our platform. Curious, we asked him a few questions about this amazing project!

Alexandre stood out in the music market when he founded Milenar in 2008, which operates in the artistic music segment (shows, label, publishing, career management). Artists such as Armandinho, Forfun, Soul Brother are some of the artists that have passed through the production company. Alexandre is also manager and artistic producer of the carioca band BRAZA. Milenar is a curator at Groover and has been receiving artists from Brazil and the world.

The idea came at the height of the pandemic when I felt the need to reinvent myself in the music industry. With the production of events and the sale of shows stopped, the Groover platform brought me the possibility to connect with artists from different parts of the world. From there I started to bring these artists together with the artists on my label (Milenar).

The chosen artists sent in their work using Groover. I analyzed them one by one, gave feedback, and the ones that I felt had a musical connection to Brazil, I contacted. Then I introduced them to the label’s artists. It was a kind of “musical match” between the artists. I just presented the work of one to the other.

The track is a mix of post hardcore, nu metal, pop punk and even a little bit of trap. The bands worked together, producing and creating the piece. Circus had a very raw guide that was sent to friends from See You At Sunset, who added some elements and sent it back.

If you can tell us something about the next releases that would be great, we look forward to it!

Yes, all the partnerships are quite unusual. They are artists who didn’t know each other, had never heard of each other, or even heard of each other. I tried to do something plural. There are tracks that mix punk rock with trap, forró pé de serra with chanson française, MPB with country music, among other mixtures. The coolest thing was that all the artists respected each other’s identity.

I can advance that the EP will have 6 tracks, where in each one of them we will have a brazilian artist with an international one. Each month we will have the release of a single, that is, until the end of the year there will be one song per month, until the EP is formed.

| Also Read: Why is it important to join Spotify users’ playlists?

5. In terms of promotion, what is the goal of making partnerships between national and international artists?

The project started as an experiment and has been transforming itself into a laboratory of artists who are connecting through this initiative. For example, we have an artist, Luca Trezza, who is participating in this project in collaboration with Robyn Bennett, a US artist. He is going on tour there, and the two of them will meet for the first time and perform live together. That is my goal, to bring the artists together and bring a positive impact to each other’s careers. With today’s technology the world is much more connected, it has become small. So I want to collaborate with this new market.

How do you evaluate the platform in the Brazilian scenario?

When I first learned about the platform I was shocked by the number of artists that use it as a tool to promote themselves. They are small artists, others not so much, who do what they love and dream of having their music heard.

It is a shame to see that the Brazilian scenario still does not actively participate in this movement. In Brazil there is still the custom of the artist looking for a recording company to do this work.

I see that the platform is very important for the artist to work on the promotion of their music. Therefore, I think it is very important to open our eyes to the work Groover has been doing, congratulations!

What is an EP and why is it the best choice for emerging artists? An EP, short for extended play, is a musical release that is longer than a single, but shorter than a full-length album. It typically contains around four to six tracks. EPs are an ideal choice for emerging artists because they allow artists to showcase their music without having to commit to a full-length debut album. They are often used as a way to introduce an artist to fans and to introduce a new sound. EPs are also a great way to experiment with new ideas, as they are generally shorter and less expensive to produce. In this article, we will explore what is an EP and how it can help emerging artists achieve greater success in the music industry.

Looking to get your music heard? ⬇️

—

1. A bit of history: what is an EP?

The single, the EP, the mixtape, the album- there are many different formats to release music! The industry of recorded music is ever evolving as listening habits evolve. As recording technology evolves with it, we have adapted our listening habits! Streaming and digital downloads have replaced CDs and cassette tapes, which in their turn replaced vinyl records and turntables. Sure, vintage vinyl and cassettes are making a comeback. But to understand where the EP originally came from, we have to go back in history to an era where vinyl was king.

The EP dates all the way back to the early 1950s! At the time, music releases were pressings on vinyl records. The larger the vinyl, the more recordings you could fit onto it. Thus, larger vinyls with more songs on them were more expensive to produce. To compensate for the production cost, the company RCA Victor, today a subsidiary of Sony, put the EP on the market in 1952. What is an EP? The EP was developed to provide a more economical alternative to a full-length album, or LP (long play) record. LPs were often too expensive to produce for smaller and independent labels and record companies. When the EP came out, labels could release shorter collections of songs that could be sold for a more affordable price. The shorter format allowed for more creative and ambitious projects to be undertaken as well. It became a widely accepted format that even was included in the Billboard charts.

In the 1960s, some of the most iconic musical acts in history rose to fame and along with them, the EP. Artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan all released EPs instead of full-length albums. The Beatles released their first EP, Long Tall Sally in 1964, followed by Four By The Beatles and The Beatles’ Second Album in 1965. The Rolling Stones released their debut EP The Rolling Stones in 1964 and followed it up with Five By Five in 1965. Bob Dylan released his debut EP, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan in 1963, and followed it up with his classic folk album The Times They Are A-Changin’ in 1964. While some EPs contained four or five tracks, the most common format featured two songs on each side of a 10-inch vinyl record.

By the 1970s, the format shifted to include more tracks and greater running time. As technology advanced, EPs could now include up to four songs on one side of a 12-inch vinyl record. In the 70s, there were a number of famous artists who released EPs, including David Bowie with his release of Pin Ups, Elton John with his EP 17-11-70, and Led Zeppelin with their release of The Song Remains the Same. All three of these EPs were highly successful and have since become classic staples in the music industry. Throughout the 80s and 90s, the EP remained a common format, but singles and full length albums took the lead in vinyl sales across record stores.

The EP format experienced a resurgence in popularity in the 2000s. The advent of digital music allowed artists to release EPs more frequently than ever before. Record labels also began to release more EPs in order to promote new artists and break them into the mainstream. Furthermore, EPs allowed artists to experiment more with their sound, enabling them to explore different musical styles and find their niche. Especially in the genres of electronic music, rap, and hip-hop, the EP was the perfect tool to experiment and define new genres.

2. Why release an EP over a single or an album?

An artist’s job, apart from creating music, is to promote their music and gain visibility and new listeners. From growing a fanbase on social networks to contacting medias with Groover, there are many ways to go about music promotion. To promote your music successfully, having an EP ready to share with fans and music industry professionals is essential.

To get your music heard by professionals in the music industry, having just one catchy single may not be enough. Even if the new single is a hit, you have to be able to prove that you have new songs that are just as good. Why not record a full album then? First of all, composing a full length album is ambitious, costly, and can take a long time. Secondly, whether it’s the media or the music pros, they may not have time to listen to your new album anyway- especially if they’ve never heard of you.

The EP, on the other hand, is the ideal format for emerging artists. Releasing an EP can be a great way for emerging artists to start building a fan base. An EP allows the artist to showcase more than one song, giving the listener a better understanding of their style. The artist must be extra careful in choosing the tracklist: every song counts. It also enables the artist to explore different genres and potential collaborations. An EP offers a longer marketing lifespan than a single, as the artist can promote it for an extended amount of time. Releasing an EP will cost less in terms of production and marketing and is a great way to get feedback.

For artists who are just starting out, it is normal to experiment with finding your unique sound. Working on an EP allows you to lay the foundations of your musical style. From a songwriting standpoint, it also allows the artist more freedom to explore different themes. The EP is a great tool to gain visibility because it acts as a teaser. When the upcoming album arrives later on, you will already have an established fan base ready to share your music.

3. When should you release an EP?

When deciding to release an EP, there are a few different factors to consider. Generally, it’s a good idea to release an EP in the early stages of a music career. Lots of artists begin their careers with a self-titled album, and you can do the same with a self-titled EP. However, this doesn’t mean that EPs are just for emerging artists! It is also a good idea to release an EP when the artist has a strong following and needs to keep fans engaged in between album releases. Were you in a duo or the frontman of a rock band and now want to go off on your own and release a solo album? Start with an EP instead. Going solo is also the moment to pick a new name, and these tips for coming up with an artist name can help you find one.

Releasing an EP can be a great way for an artist to introduce new material, build anticipation for a full album, or even to just release a batch of new singles. Some artists choose to release an EP live album or an EP compilation of bonus tracks, instrumental tracks, or unreleased music. Lana Del Rey released a self titled EP in 2012 and then rereleased the same songs as part of her second studio album Born to Die. If you take a look at some of the best albums and the discography of famous artists, you’ll find songs released previously on EPs. When you are ready for that full album, our guide on how long an album should be can help you plan the tracklist.

The successive release of EPs has been used by many successful artists, such as Billie Eilish, Hozier, and Lorde. By releasing multiple EPs, these artists have managed to gain large followings and create a unique sound. Let’s take the example of French rapper Laylow. Today, this artist is considered highly successful, with listeners waiting patiently for every new release. Before reaching this point, with the successful albums Trinity and The Strange Story of Mr. Anderson, he released 5 EPs. During these EPs, he was able to develop his artistic identity and grow his audience. Releasing music more frequently also helps to get the attention of the Spotify algorithm and boost your streams.

As you can see, the EP format can be useful throughout one’s career- not just for emerging artists. It’s important to release EPs in between bigger projects in order to keep the momentum of your career going. As the saying goes, strike while the iron is hot. Making a second album takes a lot of time. The EP is a way to capitalize on the success of your recently released album while keeping your fans interested.

Give power to your release,
send it to playlists, media and radios ⬇️

4. How much does it cost to produce an EP?

The cost of producing an EP will depend on the scale of the project and the budget of the artist. Music creation can cost anything from almost nothing to thousands of euros. It all depends on what you decide to do, how you do it, and your budget and resources. Let’s explore some possible scenarios.

When we say that music creation can cost almost nothing we mean in terms of money, not time. The time spent on producing an EP is hard to quantify. Some artists spend years producing an EP and others will do it in a matter of days or weeks. More and more artists, however, are choosing to produce music at home in a more DIY and low budget context. Regarding the material needed to record and produce music, once again, all prices exist. You can decide to invest in a home studio instead of going to professional studios. Investing in a home studio can be expensive at first, but in the long run it will be advantageous. To get basic equipment to set up your home studio (without the computer and DAW), you can expect to spend anywhere between 400€ and 2000€.

| Also read: How to choose the right recording studio for your musical project?

If you want to record in a professional studio, there are several ways of going about it. It is strongly advised to use a sound engineer during your sessions, but it is obviously not mandatory. You can usually book professional studios with or without a sound engineer present. Booking with the sound engineer will of course be more expensive. If you don’t have band members, you will need to set aside a budget for hiring session musicians to play: a guitarist, drummer, bassist, pianist, second vocalist for harmonies, a synth player, etc. This fee will depend on the rate of the musician and will either be by the hour, by the day, or by the track.

Some studios offer off-peak hours which are less expensive than recording during busy times. Expect to pay between 35 and 60€/hour in Paris and its surroundings for time in a professional studio. As you can see, the less time you spend in the studio, the less money you need to invest in your EP. This is another reason to choose the EP as your first project: it is shorter by definition, thus requiring less time and investment.

Then comes the mixing and mastering. Some talented artists also double as sound engineers and do the mixing and mastering themselves. However, we strongly advise you to call on professionals to get the best sound quality possible. Mixing and mastering an EP can cost anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand euros depending on the complexity and length of the project. Professional mixing and mastering services will typically charge an hourly rate or a flat fee per project or per song. It is important to research the quality of the engineer’s work before making a decision. Quality mixing and mastering can enhance the sound of your project and make it sound more uniform across streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. The cost of mixing and mastering an EP can also vary depending on the engineer’s experience and the length and complexity of the project.

Last but not least, don’t forget to have a plan or a small budget for the EP cover art. Visuals are an important part of your release, especially for new artists, so make sure you choose an EP album cover that will make an impression.

Conclusion: What is an EP and why is it the best choice for emerging artists?

In conclusion, releasing an EP as an emerging artist can be a great way to start building your music career. It can help you to establish a fanbase, generate revenue, and get your music heard. The EP is a versatile tool that spans music from all genres; pop music, punk, rock n roll, disco, funk, psychedelic music, and more. Testing out a new style of music? Try releasing a first single before an EP and follow it up with a first album. Want to focus on playing live instead of releasing new albums all the time? Some independent artists nowadays manage to start touring just after releasing their first EP. You don’t need to be on your third album to book tour dates!

In recent years, indie artists especially have been able to gain substantial fame through the release of EPs. A prime example of this is singer-songwriter Billie Eilish, who released her debut EP Don’t Smile at Me in 2017, which earned her a Grammy nomination. Indie-rock artist Phoebe Bridgers released her debut EP Killer in 2017, and has since earned international acclaim for her music. As you can see, an EP can be a powerful tool in launching your career and reaching a wider audience.

Izzy La Reina is an artist of many colors: influenced by gospel, the artist believes in full dedication to music and in the fusion of musical genres for the development of an authorial musical career. Groover had the pleasure to talk to Izzy about her career and the release of her first single “Diabla”. She revealed to us that future releases are already written down in her agenda. In addition, Izzy La Reina also told us about her experience using Groover, which has served as an innovative and important tool for promoting her work.

Groover is an essential tool for new artists, but it is also essential for artists who wish to expand their work into new markets.”

1. Izzy La Reina, for those who don’t know you, how would you present yourself as an artist and describe your style of music?

I consider myself a versatile artist. I look for inspiration in various movements and cultures. My influences consists of R&B, soul, jazz, MPB, and also Latin music. I believe that we, as music artists, can seek the best in each genre and make a mix of what is most interesting among them. Besides the versatility that I seek, I am an extremely hard worker. I believe that in the recipe of an artist there must be something beyond talent; success requires a lot of dedication.

Talking about my style of music, I like to say that I have strive to achieve the timbre and vocal range of black music, but with the rhythm and bounce of Latin music and including a visual identity of mainstream pop music. Quite a mix, huh? haha.

2. Can you tell us a little about your trajectory from the beginning of your career to the present day?

Of course, this is one of my favorite topics to talk about. I started my career in music very early. When I was 8 years old, I started singing with my father in churches and Christian events. My father is a musician, composer, and pastor. My mother, in turn, is a singing teacher so, it was a bit impossible to escape the world of music. We lived in Brazil, until the moment came when my father went to work in a church in the Bay Area, California. There, at the age of 14, I fell in love with American culture.

When I returned to Brazil, I signed with a local record label (Som Livre) and continued doing Christian events, leading an all-female band. It was a very important period of my life where I learned a lot, I was even nominated for the “troféu promessas” as a revelation artist. At the time, this trophy was one of the biggest awards for gospel music in Brazil.

Although it was a great start, I always knew what I really wanted, and working only in the gospel world was not an option. It was for this reason that in 2015 I decided to move back to the United States. I dropped everything in Brazil and arrived in Los Angeles with nothing (literally). As soon as I arrived, I started performing in all kinds of places and, little by little, I was gaining followers and drawing the attention of some people in the music business. This attention earned me some collaborations, and one of them was with the renowned producer “London on da track”.

In 2019, I got my first contract and started working with TMG Records, my current label. We’ve been working ever since, recording non-stop, and we’re just getting started. There is a lot of content to be worked on ahead and I hope you guys keep following along with me.

3. If Izzy La Reina had to be summed up in 3 words, what would they be?

Dedication, versatility, and positivity.

4. You have just made the official release of your first single “Diabla”. Can you tell us a little more about the song and what it means?

Many people are scared by the name, but this expression has a very cool meaning. Diabla is a word used in some Spanish speaking countries to define an empowered woman. When a woman does not allow herself to be dominated, or is indomitable, and is not shaken by the barriers imposed by the patriarchy, this woman is a “diabla”. It is also common for men to call a woman a “diabla” when she makes one of them suffer haha. The song brings exactly this idea to the table, the idea of a woman who gives direction to a relationship and hypnotizes men with her postures.

5. Recently, on your social media, you thanked your new audience that started to follow you after the release of “Diabla”. How has the positive reception of your first single been for you?

I have no words to describe this moment. I have always believed in myself, my work, and the people who work with me, but I didn’t know that the reception of the first single would be so positive and that the numbers would go up so fast. I have received many messages of support, from people who have become fans and from friends from the past who are amazed at my development. This is very gratifying.

Seeing my work and my person become a reference for some people only makes me want to deliver more of myself. This motivates me and I hope people will have the patience to follow my next releases.

6. What can we expect from you after this first single? What are your plans for the future?

I will have more releases in the coming months and I will also tell a little more of my story through audiovisual content. You will be able to listen to my music and get to know me better. You can also expect a lot of latin dancing, a lot of amazing clips, and some promising collaborations haha (spoiler).

7. Recently, you made a campaign on Groover with “Diabla”. What was using the platform to promote your work like? What were some positive aspects of the process that you found?

The experience with Groover was amazing. The platform allows us to scale a job that was previously an “antsy” job. It’s amazing to hear feedback from different points of view, plus the outreach as an extra point. Groover is essential for new artists, but it’s also essential for artists who want to expand into new market.

Thanks to online distribution services like Tunecore, everyone can have their music on streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, TikTok, etc. as soon as they have music to share! Here are 10 Things to Know about Online Music Distribution👇

1. Online Music Distribution is accessible to everyone! ✌️

Gone are the days of sending a demo of your music to a record company, then hoping that one day, if the stars align, you’ll get a response. The rise of the internet and online music platforms have made music distribution simple!! Today, thanks to online services like TuneCore, all you have to do is create your account and send your music to digital stores and streaming platforms. TuneCore takes charge of distributing it as widely as possible! And at the end of the month, TuneCore sends you your royalty accounting and a paycheck. There’s no selection process – everyone can be on Spotify as soon as they have music to share!

| Read also: How to get more Streams on Spotify?

2. Distribution is not a huge investment. 📈

Now that you know that being on streaming platforms is not just for Ariana Grande and Drake, you’re naturally asking yourself: how much does it cost? Again, the service is meant to be accessible to all!

You can distribute your music with unlimited subscriptions or pay per release (see details below). So there’s no need to break the bank. In fact it will earn you an income!

| Read also: How to choose a budget for your release?

Tunecore’s pricing for pay-per-release

3. Distribution is big source of income in music and you keep 100% of it! 💰

Each streaming play, download or use of your music in a video brings you money. After distributing your music, TuneCore collects your earnings and makes them available in your TuneCore account. There’s no commission on this money, you get to keep 100% of it to reinvest in other parts of your project, such as promotion (poke 👉Groover), your instruments, or the tour bus of your dreams! While this seems logical, historically artists only touched a small percentage of these royalties, with the majority going back to the label or record company. This is a revolution that gives independent artists more power, but – as Peter Parker’s uncle in Spider Man would say – also more responsibility.

4. It’s fast! But take your time.

When you’ve got new music fresh from the studio, you’ve got only one thing on your mind: sharing it with the world! Great news! It’s possible to distribute your music via TuneCore in just a few days. However, we strongly advise you to allow 3 to 4 weeks between uploading your music and the date of its release. Why? Firstly, it gives you time to prepare your release plan with your promotional service (Looking at you again 👀 Groover). Secondly, because it gives the music platform editors the opportunity to listen to your track. And finally, it leaves some room if you need to make any modifications to your release information: credits, cover art, etc.

| Read also: How to get on Spotify playlists?

5. You don’t need to be an expert to get started 🧐

Most independent artists are self-taught, meaning that they learned through practice. It’s the same for music distribution. It isn’t rocket science and anyone can get started. The TuneCore website was created to guide you step by step, all the while giving you the necessary resources to go further. You also have access to a support team (based in France and the US) who can respond to all your specific questions and requests.

6. You can aim for the whole world 🌍

The advantage of digital distribution is that you don’t have to invest in production costs (CD, vinyl) or in logistics (transport, storage). With TuneCore your music is distributed to over 150 platforms all over the world. It’s not expensive and it can bring you a lot more income and visibility. In France people are most familiar with platforms like Deezer, Spotify and Apple, but each country has its own favorite platforms for listening to music (Gaana in India, Tencent in China, VK in Russia etc). So the best thing to do is to make your music available to the greatest number of listeners across the globe!

7. You can share your music on social media (Tik Tok, Instagram etc)

These days, the line between music listening platforms and social media is getting thinner and thinner. That’s why it’s very important to make your music accessible in the music libraries of Instagram or Tik Tok. This allows your fans to share your music with their followers, giving it the chance to go viral. The good news is that TuneCore also distributes your music on these networks. The other good news is that the use of your music on these networks generates additional income on top of the income generated from music listening platforms!

8. Your cover art should not contain text.🎨

Apart from the title of the album or single and the name of the artists, music platforms will reject any text that appears on your cover art. This is good information to share with your graphic designer or to keep in mind for yourself when you create your cover art.

9. You can broadcast your music with a cross-platform link 🎡

When you share your music, you need to put yourself in the place of the potential listener who might discover it. This listener might not use the same streaming platform as you, so to optimize your chances that they will hear it, you must make life easy for them by making it accessible with a single link / single click. To do this there are great free tools like SmartUrl that allow you to create a cross-platform link that will redirect the listener to your music on the streaming platform of their choice.

| Read also: Smart Links – How to share your music all in one place?

10. Don’t stop at distribution!🙅‍♂‍

Once your music is available on streaming platforms, your work is not done! There are other steps you can take to give your project life, the first of which is promoting it. This is where Groover comes in to help you get discovered and to broadcast your music to the right people!

I hope that you now know a bit more about online music distribution and above all that you’re excited to get started. We’re lucky to live in a time when music creation is accessible for all. It’s now up to you to seize your moment, learn and have fun while doing it!

We went to meet Delia Nicole, a 16 year old artist who is working hard to achieve her dream of a career in the world of pop music. She released her beautiful track “No Feelings Tonight” on August 14th, an electro-pop song, with the German label Major Promo Music, met on Groover.

One of the biggest problems in the music business nowadays is: very often you get NO answers. This is different at Groover. […] And the last thing: you only pay if you get an answer. No hidden costs.

-MPM-

1. Delia Nicole and Major Promo Music (MPM), how did you meet?

MPM: Delia sent her incredible track „No Feelings Tonight“ as a Groover submission. She was looking for a label and promotion.
The track did something I have not had for a very long time: it catched me from the first seconds on – and it still does.
I answered her that I like the track very much, and if she is interested in a digital release, she could contact me, even though my small digital label never had an international artist before.
Delia wanted me to release the song as soon as possible, but I wanted to set up everything properly. So we went through the whole release chain, creating the artwork, writing a biography, setting up the artists page at Spotify and creating a promo plan. Not everything is 100% now, but we are good to go.

2. Delia Nicole, how was your musical project born? What are your inspirations?

DELIA NICOLE: Music has always been my biggest passion and being an artist was always my dream. So I would not call this a project, it is more than that, it is my dream becoming true step by step. I think it all started when I was little and I realised how much I like to sing and to show my soul through art. When I was 11, I decided that I want to take singing classes, so my parents took me to one of the best singing private schools in my country. Back then, I started to write songs too (even though I had written some too when I was really small, but not serious ones). But at the age of 11, I started to take songwriting more seriously and I wrote over 30 songs until now. I started to write songs as a form of self consolation and empowerment. My biggest inspirations are independent female artists in the music industry who fought to come in the position they are right now.

3. Delia Nicole you are only 16 years old! What’s it like having a day with you?

DELIA NICOLE: Well, it depends 🙂 I am not a fan of routine, so everyday is different for me, especially right now in summer break. I am also a moody person, so my mood usually dictates most of my activities of that day. But on a normal school day, I usually wake up at 06:30 and go to highschool. After that, I either come home or spend some time outside with my friends. Then I am usually working on my music or having singing classes. And after that I do my homework and then go to bed. But a lot of my time is spent thinking of music and my future wanted career.

| Follow her on Instagram

4. And a day at Major Promo Music?

MPM: I work in the music business now for more than 20 years, and one of the best things about it is: no day is like an other.
No project is like an other. You get up in the morning and you have NO idea what will happen today. Anything is possible. Or nothing.
But mainly: creating great ideas, talk a lot, write even more emails, collect informations, spred news and make plans which you can throw away one hour later.
Working with music and artists is different from any other job in the world.

5. Major Promo Music, what convinced you about Delia Nicole’s project?

MPM: Right at the beginning, the first words.
I was deeply impressed by her voice, the power of her singing, her lyrics and how she got my attention from the start. Please listen to „No Feelings Tonight“ and you will hear what I mean.
I could not believe that she had no record deal with Universal, Warner or Sony. The the unique style, the quality of the production and the mix/mastering are amazing.

6. And your meeting afterwards, what did you get out of it?

The first contact was within the Groover platform. Afterwards we wrote emails for a while. Now we had some video calls via WhatsApp and a very active chat.
You know, it is not just Corona pandemic which make it hard to meet. We live 1800 kilometers from each other.

7. Delia Nicole, what’s the most important thing you’ve learned since the creation of your project?

DELIA NICOLE: The most important thing I learned is to overcome fear and not let it control you or your future. Also, listen to advice, but never fully trust someone. And most important, stay true to yourself and maintain that inner spark that initially brought you here.

8. What are your common plans for the coming year?

MPM: We start building a fan base and we establish Delia Nicole in the media/radio/streaming playlists. We are using Groover of course, but as a radio plugger and Spotify playlist host I am pushing her music here as well. The best thing is, we have two great remixes which we will release later and more excellent tracks from Delia, which we can release whenever we feel like it is time.

9. What would be your advice to young developing artists?

MPM: Create great music, do your thing, wait for nobody and get your socials right.

Read also : How to gain new followers on Instagram in 2020

10. And finally, what do you think of Groover?

MPM: The platform is great. We are so happy with the first feedbacks. Delia Nicole’s song got included in excellent Spotify and Deezer playlists thanks to Groover and was broadcast in different countries, which we normally couldn’t reach. I use Groover as both: as a promotion tool for my releases, and I’m also listed as an influencer, so I know both sides of the story. One of the biggest problems in the music business nowadays is: very often you get NO answers. This is different at Groover. I also like the bandwidth of different influencers you can contact here. And the last thing: you only pay if you get an answer. No hidden costs.
On the influencer side: I LOVE the quality of submissions you get here. It is extremely high. A lot of professionals and professional music. I made my own personal playlist called „Best of Groover submission“ which I listen to from time to time. I think that shows it all 😉
