2. Who are the blogs, radios and music pros on Groover?

Groover influencers are music enthusiasts who have been handpicked by the Groover team for their ability to spot new musical trends. Today they fall into 3 main categories:

Media outlets: magazines, radio stations, blogs, playlists, YouTube channels… If they like your song, they will share it with their audience, allowing new fans to discover your music.

Labels, Publishers, and Bookers: they are looking for the next talents to sign and promote, working as your potential future partners.

Mentors: managers, coaches, or other professionals in the field. They have been selected for their ability to give constructive advice on your production, your career, or your project.

3. When should I send my music on Groover?

Before starting a campaign on Groover, you need to identify the current phase of your project:

If your project is not artistically finished but you have demos, you can use Groover to contact labels, managers, touring companies, publishers– even if they will often wait to hear a “finished” project- or mentors who will be able to give you detailed advice on your strategy and production. Read our article How to find a Booker?

If your project is mixed, mastered, ready to be released or already released, you are now in the promotion phase of your project. Using Groover can boost your visibility as soon as your first single is released and serve as a springboard before the release of a more ambitious project (EP, album…) or a major event (concert, interview, showcase). In this case, there are two potential ways to proceed- plans A and B below.

Keep in mind that some influencers- especially independent playlists – are much more responsive and efficient when your music has already been released on streaming platforms like Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music etc. Consider excluding these influencers from any campaign you may be running pre-release day and wait until the track is available on streaming platforms before contacting them. You can also add the Spotify link in your track info at that time.

💡 Tip: You can prepare organized lists of influencers– via the little bookmark icon- based on promotion type or timing: “Before release” and “Day of release” for example. This will save you time!

If you don’t know where to start, we strongly advise that you send your music the day of its release or some time after. Contact as many relevant influencers as possible in order to give your song the visibility it deserves!

Remember to regularly remind people who follow you to go listen to your track, look for new contacts, create new relationships with different players in the music world- artists, producers, media / radio / labels etc. If they discover your music and fall in love with it even a year after its release, they will not hesitate to share it with their community. This can continue to attract more and more curious people and fans around your music!

4. Can I send a song that hasn’t been released yet?

Yes, of course! You can use:

An unlisted Youtube link– make sure to check that your video is embeddable.

A private Soundcloud link– be sure to use a shareable link with a small code called ‘token’ at the end, obtained by clicking “Share” under the Soundcloud player.

Remember to indicate the upcoming release date of the song. The musical influencer will thus be warned that the song has not yet been released and therefore they should not share it yet.
If you are looking for a media to share your song as an exclusive premiere, don’t hesitate to specify that it is an Exclusivity thanks to the box specifically provided at the time of sending your song.
If you’re looking for advice on a pre-mix or demo, you can select the Demo option when entering your song information so that music influencers are notified.

5. Write the perfect pitch for your song

Once you have chosen the media, radios, labels and music pros you wish to contact and added a link to your song, the last crucial step before validating your submission is to write a good pitch for your song.

Here are a few tips on how to get attention and make your mark:

1. Specify what you are looking for, don’t leave your contacts in the dark
What are you looking for right now? Visibility (articles, playlist inclusions…) ? A label, a manager, a booker? Need advice on your demo? All of that at once?

2. Adapt your pitch according to the chosen contacts
At the moment, are you looking for a label for the release of your next EP? After playing several concerts, do you now want to work with a tour manager? You want to publicize your recent release to the media?
Don’t hesitate to adapt your request and the information you provide according to the contacts you have chosen, informing them briefly about your current news.

3. Be concise and informative
No matter what happens, the professionals you contact at Groover will listen to your track. Rather than describing your song, try to give them the context. For example, you can give them 1-2 essential points about your project, keeping it concise. A few suggestions:

The release date of your album/single, and the link to listen to it

The context or story behind a music video

Your next gig or the venues of your last important concert dates

A recent opening act you did for a band you admire

Support received for the release in question (crowdfunding, media coverage…)

Your top musical influences

Make sure not to give too much information- try to concentrate on 1-2 essential elements of your project that are likely to interest professionals, 5 lines of text maximum. This is a first contact and their time is limited.

💡 Final Tip: Don’t forget to fill out your profile and keep it up to date. It is a sign of seriousness and an important source of information for professionals who discover your project. It’s also a way to detail your musical universe a little more than in the pitch field!

Magon’s artist profil on Groover

| Read also: How to manage your Budget when releasing your Music for the Best Promotion?

7. What budget should I invest on my Groover campaign?

After 2 years of Groover being alive, the platform’s data clearly show that the most successful campaigns on Groover were all sent to more than 30 contacts (60 Grooviz), and most of them more than 50 contacts (100 Grooviz).

The # of curators / pros chosen will of course depend on your music style and your targets, but with more than 3,000 curators / pros currently active, you risk to be spoiled for choice (though filters can help!)

If you’re looking for visibility: more than 70% of the contacts available on Groover can offer you direct opportunities to get coverage if they have a crush on your music. If it is your main target, your budget can rise over 100-150 Grooviz (50-75 contacts) depending on the music genres to which you identify your music. The more you select curators and pros, the more you increase your chances to get interesting results!

If you want to build your entourage: we recommend here to take your time to target relevant contacts for you and your musical univers. The campaigns can be small and precise.

More advice about which budget you should invest on Groover are available here

8. How does feedback work on Groover?

A feedback is a short text of a minimum of 15 words written by the musical influencer on the song sent by the artist or their representative. Today, the average feedback is close to 40 words. Feedback is private- only you and the musical influencer who wrote it have access to them.

What can an artist expect to read?
The feedback is more or less detailed according to the influencer- who is free to say what they please- with the intention of being constructive (for the artist), explanatory (on the reasons for sharing or not), sincere, and encouraging. Every musical influencer has read and adheres by the Groover Feedback Guide.

9. As an artist, am I guaranteed to get articles or shares?

No, this is not Groover‘s principle. The platform guarantees that your track will be listened to and that you will receive feedback from the chosen blogs, labels and pros. The response rate is indeed higher than 85%, and you get Grooviz – name of the credits on Groover – back if you don’t get an answer within 7 days.

However, we do all our best to guide you towards the right curators & pros for you so you maximize the opportunities you can get. Currently, the acceptation rate – i.e. when your track is shared or when the curator / pro wants to get in touch with you – is around 20%! Two things to remember, which can seem opposite but actually can help find the right balance:

Good targeting is key and will increase your performance

The more you contact curators & pros, the more concrete opportunities you’ll get!

Important: the music curators & pros on Groover remain entirely free to share your song and to contact you or not. If you want to know how campaigns have gone for other musicians, you can read Groover reviews from artists and music pros.

And there you go! All you have to do is register here 👈

YouTube has more than 2 billion logged-in users every month and billions of videos. For musicians, it remains one of the best places to post and promote their music, and benefit from the platform’s long-form content structure. All it takes is one music video, cover video, lyric video, or loop of a song’s visual component to blow up and have you and your work get well-deserved recognition.

A Youtube link (or SoundCloud link) – private or public – is all you need to send your music to the media and music industry pros of your choice that are available on Groover! Find more than 3,000 Youtube channels, playlists, radios, blogs and labels directly in your account.

Here’s how to promote your music on YouTube:

1. Use Youtube Ads to Increase Your Visibility On the Platform

This is the most obvious way to promote music directly on Youtube because ads are ubiquitous on the platform.

Ads on Youtube are super customizable and can be placed in different spots:

Ads that appear directly on the YouTube home page to shortcut a potential viewer to your YouTube channel

Ads associated with keywords that appear when a user searches on YouTube (feel free to use a keyword tool to help you out!)

Ads broadcast before/during/after a video

Ads visible only on mobile phones

To start creating ads on Youtube, you need to have a YouTube account and create a Google Ads account. If you’ve already done ads on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll notice that the process is similar.

To create your Youtube ad, you have to choose:

The video you want to boost

The format of the ad and its location (in a video, in a search, etc.)

A target audience

A determined budget that will be linked to the cost per click or per view

Feel free to experiment with different formats for Youtube ads and follow up on them regularly to understand which one works best for promoting your music! Remember, targeting your Youtube ads is key. It’s a powerful tool that can be harnessed by using the resources made available by Google to help users get ads.

2. Get Your Youtube Channel Verified

Verification is a dream on many platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and/or Instagram, but perhaps the platform on which verification has the greatest impact is Youtube. The verification badge needs 100,000 subscribers and adds no extra features. For musicians, what counts is the Official Artist Channel, which provides you with exclusive benefits:

gives you access to detailed stats

brings together the subscribers of your Topic channel, your Vevo channel and your own channel

allows you to promote your merch and tours directly under your Youtube videos

To get one, you need at least one official release on YouTube delivered by a distributor or label, and they make the request for you.

3. Make Music Videos and Clips that Illustrate Your Music

On an artist’s YouTube channel, you’d expect to find visuals for their music, so make sure you have visual content that is engaging enough to keep viewers watching, even if they don’t know the song. Including the song title in the video is crucial for better SEO on video sharing platforms like YouTube, and will allow any intrigued listeners to move over to a streaming platform to add your song to their music library.

On YouTube, clips are king, so we advise you to upload as consistently as possible! Image is inseparable from music, especially on YouTube, which remains a platform for music and entertainment. In addition, short clips are the perfect material to promote with for Youtube Ads. You can also put your clips on Vevo through a partner distributor, and our Vevo vs YouTube comparison explains what it adds to a regular channel.

4. Offer a Variety of Content On Your Channel

As an artist, your YouTube channel is mainly used to post and promote your music videos, but there are plenty of other ways to showcase your work on Youtube. Users enjoy learning more about the lives of creators and artists, and this is reflected in the popularity of vlogs on the platform. You can totally – if you have the time and the inclination – offer other video formats on Youtube, be it vlogs, behind the scenes videos, or your musical influences… this will allow you to build a real community around your project. All of this extra content you offer is what contributes to the storytelling that is so important in increasing the visibility of your music.

You can also create curated playlists for your fans to listen to. This is a great way for your fanbase to get to know you and listen to your music, as well as music you like. This is a key promotional tool for any independent artist to gain listeners and subscribers.

5. Use Keywords

The title of the YouTube video is crucial because it must allow you to get as much out of the search as possible and grab a user’s attention. Don’t forget to write a suitable description and add relevant tags to each of your videos; including keywords in the video description is essential to improve visibility and increase views, as it can help a user find the video without knowing the title.

Keep the title short and straight to the point for your live videos and music videos, such as your song name and artist name. For your other videos, you can analyze what is working the most at the moment on YouTube and adapt the content, title, and description with potentially trending keywords in the tags (as long as they are relevant). Youtube Autocomplete and Google Trends are good tools to find the keywords searched by language and country and to know the associated trends. Keywords are only one part of how YouTube recommends videos, and our guide on getting your music discovered on YouTube explains how the algorithm also weighs viewer engagement.

For example, you can find YouTube searches for “jazz piano” worldwide over the last 30 days. You will also find related searches and where those terms are searched, and you can also compare with similar terms to see which ones are most searched:

6. Create Intriguing Thumbnails

Now that your video is visible on the platform, you want as many users as possible to click on it. The thumbnail should attract attention and make people want to know more. In general, colorful images are what catch the eye, but the picture quality is most important. If it is blurry or poorly framed, it suggests that the video is also poor quality. We therefore advise you to remember to take pictures/stills when you record a video for your channel to ensure a good result. You can also do simple edits using apps like Canva.

7. Create a Connection With Your Audience

Listening and building relationships with subscribers is super important in order to increase your YouTube subscriber count and showcase your music online. We advise you to like and respond to certain comments on your posts to create a dialogue with your audience and be engaged. The YouTube Studio App allows you to manage your profile, easily create playlists and reply to comments directly on a mobile!

Youtube Studio : Perfect for music promotion

You can also make community posts that allow you to tease future videos, talk about new updates you may have and stay in touch with your new fans. These posts can be plain text, or contain images, videos, GIFs, Youtube playlists, or even a poll.

8. Collaborate With Other Artists and Creators

YouTube is full of talented creators and artists. A great way to reach more people is to do collabs and combine your fanbases. Whether it’s a purely musical collaboration or something more general with a creator of the platform, all ideas can bring visibility to your Youtube channel and allow you to gain subscribers that may not have seen your content otherwise. Contact the artists and creators who you would like to work with via the email address provided in the ‘About’ tab of their channel or on social networks.

9. Boost Your Other Platforms With Youtube

With YouTube, you can also boost the visibility of your other platforms! Every video you post is a showcase for your music and the description allows you to talk about your other channels. Feel free to place a cross-platform link in your bio and at the end of the descriptions under your videos to direct viewers to your other socials where they can find more content.

To promote a future release or clip, you can simply post teasers and invite users to follow you on Spotify or YouTube Music, for example, to find all your songs as soon as they are released.

10. Place Your Video on Popular YouTube Channels

Getting your music video a placement on a popular YouTube channel is a great way to spread the word about your latest track and redirect people to your personal YouTube channel. There are many channels that offer this in all musical styles, and some curators even offer to post the songs with animations or to post the lyrics. Some placements are paid and others are not, so don’t hesitate to ask the channel manager via their email, often indicated in the “about” tab.

You can also submit your music to YouTube channels directly on Groover!

You may think that your work is done once the filming of your music video is finished, but in reality, your work has only just begun. The next step is to promote it and, as an independent artist, that’s where things can get tricky because, unlike the biggest names in the music industry, you don’t have the backing of a record label or an already large and established fanbase.

You have to promote it all by yourself and when coming up with a good marketing strategy, the thing to keep in mind is that not only do you want your number of views to climb steadily, but you also want your viewers to actively engage with your music video by liking it or by leaving a comment.

This may seem like a lot but don’t worry, here are a few strategies that can help you promote your music video on the Internet.

1. The better you target your audience, the better results you will get

If you’re hoping to get real results from a video marketing strategy, the first thing you need to do is target the right audience for your music. In other words, you need to find your niche.

The truth is that not everyone is going to like or even understand your music, and that’s okay. There are over 8 billion people in the world and your job is to find those who will resonate with your art and you need to share your music video with them. By narrowing your range, you’re actually much more likely to grow your audience and fanbase organically.

With that in mind, the first thing you need to do is define your musical genre, be it hip-hop, rap, country, or flamenco … Once you have your genre, you can find your target audience and the next step is to find out where they like to spend their time online. Is it YouTube? Instagram? TikTok? Facebook? All of the above? Bear in mind that unless you’re creating a very particular type of music that only appeals to a certain age group, it’s most likely that you will have to promote your music video on multiple social media platforms.

2. Make sure you optimize your music video when you upload it to YouTube

One of the most important online platforms for promoting a music video is YouTube, as it’s one of the biggest online music discovery platforms with almost 2.5 billion users.

With this in mind, the first thing to do if you don’t already have one, is to create a YouTube account. Similarly, if you haven’t set up your channel page yet, make sure that it is clear and complete as you want to come across as professional.

Ok, so you’ve got your music video ready to go and you want to upload it to YouTube to finally share it with the world. The problem is, there are over three million videos uploaded to YouTube every day. Yes, you read that right. That’s a huge amount of content and if you want to give your own video a fighting chance against the competition, you need to optimize it.

To do, this, you want to choose the title of your video carefully and make it as attention-grabbing as possible. YouTube also allows you to write a description of your video, so include all the relevant information about it. Another thing to do is align your music video’s tags with those of other popular videos in your genre, as this will allow your video to appear as a recommendation, which is a great way to drive traffic to it.

Finally, you should add any relevant Google keywords to your video’s metadata to increase the chances of your music video appearing in search results (and therefore getting more views!).

3. There’s no way around it, you need to use YouTube advertising

You’ve optimized your music video and it is now up on YouTube. You may think that there’s nothing more you can do to promote it on the platform but actually, there is.

You now need to look into YouTube advertising. Essentially, it is a service that promotes your video by showing it to potential fans.

From a practical point of view, it’s important to know that you need a Google account to use YouTube advertising. It can also be a YouTube account or a Gmail account.

Now, the problem with advertising on YouTube is that it costs money and since you’re not signed to a record label, this will have to come out of your own pocket. With this in mind, an important thing to consider when looking into YouTube ads is your budget. Bear in mind that even a small budget can have a big impact on your number of views and it’s better to start small and increase the amount you invest later if the campaign is working.

On the YouTube advertising platform, you can choose a daily budget or a campaign total and you need to make sure you select a start date and an end date for your campaign, whether it’s one week, one month, or six months…

When deciding on your campaign, one thing you have to put in is some keywords. Remember that an effective promotional strategy is about targeting the right audience so with that in mind, you need to be as specific as possible with the keywords you choose.

A good way to do this is to ask yourself: who does my music sound like? And on whose video would I like my music video to appear as an advert?

You’ve got a name, great! Write it down along with a few other words. Since you want to be as specific as possible, you don’t need to have a lot of keywords, just a few very specific ones.

Once you’ve submitted your form, your campaign needs to be approved and once it’s launched, you need to keep an eye on the results. Are the views climbing as much as you’d hoped? Are the results better than you expected and, if so, do you perhaps want to extend the campaign?

4. You need to engage with other music videos and submit your own to YouTube playlists

It’s important to always keep in mind that YouTube is a lively and buzzing community where content creators share their work and viewers share their thoughts and engage with said content.

This is why each video has a comment section under it and you need to promote your music video in that space as well.

Not only do you need to respond to any comments made on your own music video, but a great way to drive traffic to your video from another channel or page is to like and comment on similar videos to yours. This may be a bit time consuming but the results are worth it as it’s one of the best ways to grow organically on the platform, as well as build an active and engaged community around your music.

Another great way to drive traffic to your music video on the platform is to be featured in a video playlist. This works in the way as being featured on a popular Spotify playlist and can be a huge help in promoting your music video.

For this to happen, you need to submit your music video to YouTube playlist curators, maybe some that create playlists featuring indie music and independent artists.

You can either reach out to them independantly by using any email you may find on their website or YouTube channel, or you can even message them directly on social media platforms and interact with them there. Or, if you want to simplify the process, you can go through a music promotion service such as Groover that can put you in touch with these curators and submit your music video on your behalf.

—

Get in touch with Youtube channels 👇

—

5. Promote your YouTube channel on other social media platforms to drive traffic to your music video

The online world is not only vast, but also interconnected and you can use one online platform to promote content on another.

Regardless of how many followers you have, be it one or one million, you need to share and promote your music video on your social media platforms and make sure you get your music heard.

To do this, you need to have good content and it needs to be about your music video, or at least, about your music. A great way to use Instagram reels or TikTok for example is to show a short 30 second extract of your music video. You can also share some behind-the scene moments, any interviews you may have done to promote the music video… really, anything that is relevant.

Another thing you can do on social media that is quite effective and could be a good addition to your social media strategy, is to use influencer marketing.

To do this, you need to look up people who have a larger social media following than you in your niche and offer to collaborate with them, whether this be featuring them in a music video, or asking them to share your music video to their followers and subscribers in order to reach new fans.

As a quick final word on social media, similarly to YouTube ads, you can run social media ads such as Facebook ads or Instagram ads to target specific audiences and demographics. These can be incredibly useful to grab people’s attention and reach a larger fanbase than you would otherwise.

6. Keep in mind other online platforms to promote your music video

Music blogs sure aren’t as big as social media nowdays but they can still be a helpful tool to promote your music video. Not only that, but being featured on one as an unsigned artist can help you gain credibility amongst industry professionals and within the music industry in general.

Now, circling back to the first section, proper targeting is key to an effective promotional strategy so always keep in mind the genre of music you’re creating and reach out to blogs specialised in that genre.

What you want to do once you’ve pinned down your genre and have made a list of the possible online blogs, magazines, or even radio stations, that could suit you, is to search their website for their contact information or any sort of submission page. When contacting bloggers for a chance to feature your music video, always make sure that you give them all the important information so as to make it easier for them to go over your submission. Similarly to curated YouTube playlists, you can go through Groover to contact various media outlets that can help promote your music video.

To conclude, there are plenty of ways to promote a music video on the internet and by combining a proper use of Youtube as well as promoting your video on other media platforms, you can increase your number of views and get your music heard.

—

If you go to your YouTube homepage right now and scroll down, you might stumble upon a video that makes you wonder how the YouTube algorithm decides what to show you, especially when it seems unrelated to your usual content. Sometimes, the answer is nothing. Could be because a creator has uploaded new music videos that are designed to engage not only existing fans, but also to captivate potential new subscribers.

For musical artists, understanding how to get your music discovered on YouTube isn’t just about reaching people who already enjoy your genre—it’s about breaking into untapped markets on YouTube and across diverse music streaming services.

1. Understanding the YouTube Algorithm for Music Discovery

The YouTube algorithm is a powerful tool in the music promotion toolkit, designed to maximize viewer engagement—a key metric for artists aiming to extend their reach. It analyzes search and watch histories, along with engagement metrics like likes, comments, views, and playback duration. This data helps predict which new releases might appeal to individual users, including those who might never have encountered your genre before.

To tap into this, artists should consider uploading content that aligns with the interests shown in user behaviors across various platforms—not just YouTube, but also on major music streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. High engagement rates can help promote your music to broader audiences, increasing your chances of reaching fresh eyes (and while you’re at it, earning higher royalties through increased streams and downloads).

2. Optimizing Video SEO for Broader Reach

Optimizing each element of your video content is crucial. This includes ensuring high production value, clear audio, and engaging visuals that meet the high standards of popular music platforms. High-quality video uploads convey professionalism, setting you apart on YouTube and other music services like Google Play Music and iTunes.

Your video titles, descriptions, and tags should grab attention and accurately reflect the content. Putting in relevant keywords and hashtags for your genre helps improve how algorithms understand and categorize your content, enhancing your visibility across various music streaming apps.

3. Boosting Viewer Engagement

Viewer engagement is crucial for the YouTube algorithm. Encourage viewers to subscribe to your YouTube channel, comment on your videos, and share your tracks across social media and online music platforms. These interactions are significant metrics for YouTube’s algorithm. They tell it that your content is valuable and should be recommended to others.

Creating content that engages viewers not only keeps them watching, but also builds a community around your music, increasing the likelihood of your tracks being featured on curated playlists and recommended sections of streaming services. Plus, there’s no marketing technique with a higher success rate than word of mouth. This community-building is essential for indie artists looking to expand their listener base.

4. Strategic Release Timing

The timing of your video releases can significantly affect their initial impact. Posting during peak user activity times maximizes exposure and engagement, essential for artists distributing music globally. This strategy is crucial for artists on music distribution services like Tunecore or CD Baby, as aligning your releases with viewer habits can enhance your music’s visibility.

You might also consider time zones here. If you sing in Japanese, for example, don’t release your video from Europe while it’s the middle of the night in Japan. If you’re reading this article though, there’s a good chance you sing in English, and your target audience are English speakers. You have a few choices here: if you’re looking for more fans specifically in Australia, try posting when they’re up and online. If you just want more viewers no matter the location, you might try posting when it’s daytime in the US and Canada to roll the dice with the bigger population numbers.

For musicians, considering when your audience is most active online helps tailor your release schedule effectively, potentially increasing your overall impact in the music industry. Using tools like YouTube Analytics to gain insights into viewer preferences is invaluable for planning your music marketing and promotion strategies.

5. YouTube Shorts: A New Avenue for Music Promotion

YouTube Shorts is rapidly becoming an essential platform for musicians to promote their music and engage with a global audience. Since their rollout in 2020-2021, they’ve changed the conversation around how to get your music discovered on YouTube. This feature allows artists to create short, engaging videos that are perfect for showcasing snippets of new releases or highlighting catchy hooks that encourage viewers to listen to the full song. Using YouTube Shorts effectively can help artists reach new listeners who prefer quick and entertaining content.

By posting music from their existing catalog or new releases, artists can drive traffic back to their main YouTube channel or music streaming services like Spotify or Tidal. Additionally, YouTube Shorts offers a unique opportunity to distribute music in a format that’s optimized for viral growth, thanks to its algorithm that promotes content that achieves quick, high engagement, helping artists to rapidly expand their fanbases and enhance their music’s online presence.

6. The Little-Known Technique of Networking

Another technique (super secret, no one has eeeever heard of it before) is connecting with influencers, playlist curators, record labels, radio stations, and music bloggers who are keen on discovering new talent. Getting a direct line to music professionals not only helps artists get constructive feedback on their tracks, but also increases their chances of securing collabs and gigs. In turn, this helps artists to both post videos more optimized to succeed on YouTube and to be featured in more places, driving more traffic to their channels.

On a platform like Groover, artists can send their songs to selected industry pros, ensuring that their music is heard by relevant parties who can provide valuable insights and exposure.

Additionally, Groover guarantees that artists will receive feedback, which can be instrumental for indie music creators looking to refine their sound or explore new genres. This approach not only democratizes access to high-level music promotion, but also enhances digital music distribution by connecting creators with major players who can help them make better stuff.

Whether it’s getting featured on prominent music blogs, scoring airplay on internet radio, or lining up a music streaming service playlist placement, networking offers a pathway for artists to amplify their reach and impact within the music industry.

Conclusion

Mastering YouTube’s features and strategically engaging with its algorithm are vital steps for any artist looking to grow their audience and reach new fans. Take hold of the platform to not only stream and sell your music but, also to connect with a broader audience effectively. Remember though, while it’s crucial to optimize for digital distribution and music streaming services, maintaining the authenticity of your musical expression is key to genuinely connecting with your audience and enhancing your music career.

Embrace these strategies as tools to amplify your reach and influence, ensuring your unique artistic voice remains at the forefront of your online presence. Whether it’s through engaging music videos, strategic content creation, or savvy marketing tactics, the goal is to make your music accessible to the millions of music lovers out there, helping you to build a lasting career in the ever-evolving music business.

In recent years, YouTube has evolved from a video sharing platform to a lucrative online business opportunity for content creators. With over 2 billion monthly users logged in and countless hours of videos watched every day, YouTube offers huge potential for individuals looking to monetize their hobby and content and generate revenue. However, to successfully monetize your YouTube channel, it’s not enough to just upload videos, you also need to develop a strategic approach and understand the platform’s monetization features.

So, whether you’re looking to make a living by earning a full salary from your YouTube channel or you just want to earn a little extra money online in your spare time, let’s explore the different strategies and techniques that will enable you to effectively monetize your YouTube channel.

1. Create high-quality videos

If you’re new to YouTube, the first step is creating a YouTube channel and then creating engaging and original content that resonates with your viewers. Whatever your target audience, and whether you’re creating tutorials, vlogs, reviews or entertainment videos, you should always focus on the value you bring to your viewers and subscribers.

So if you are serious about making money online, it may be worth allocating a budget to develop your channel and investing in professional equipment, such as a quality camera and microphone. The aim is to create videos that look and sound professional.

To increase the visibility of your videos and attract more viewers, make sure you optimise your metadata, particularly titles, descriptions and tags. To do this, use relevant keywords that accurately describe your content and are commonly searched for by your target audience, as this will improve your videos’ chances of appearing in search results and YouTube recommendations.

2. Promote your videos

This brings us onto our next point : you need viewers to see your great content and therefore, you need to promote your videos. YouTube marketing prioritises building a loyal audience so with this in mind, you need to focus on leveraging the platform’s features to optimise your video content for search and discovery, and foster a community through likes, comments and subscriptions.

It’s also important to promote your videos on a variety of platforms, including social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and LinkedIn, but also on your own website or blog, and through email newsletters or even influencers. Make sure you always encourage your audience to like, comment and share your new videos, as engagement metrics are important factors influencing YouTube’s recommendation algorithm. Another great idea would be to collaborate with other YouTubers and creators in your niche to reach new audiences and cross-promote each other’s content.

And bear in mind that any effort to promote your music will most likely affect the popularity of your music video as well. So get your music on popular Spotify playlists, contact music bloggers and influencers, and submit your music to radio stations to be featured… as all of this will, in turn, bring people to view your music video on YouTube.

To promote your music effectively, you can either take it upon yourself or you can go through a music promotion platform such as Groover where you can submit your tracks to a selection of people in the music industry (the ones seen above: playlist curators, radio shows, music bloggers…), boosting your music’s reach.

Send your music to Youtube channels 👇

3. Enable monetization features

OK, so you’ve uploaded some great content to your YouTube channel and you’ve been sharing it as much as you can to build up your subscribers and viewers. Now you want to start earning money from that content to make some extra income. To do this, you need to meet the platform’s monetization eligibility requirements : your channel needs to have at least 4,000 watch hours and 1,000 subscribers within the past 12 months and it needs to comply with content and copyright guidelines.

Once you have met these conditions, you can sign up for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and activate monetization features such as YouTube ads, channel memberships and Super Chat.

4. Monetize your YouTube channel with ads

The most common way of monetising your YouTube channel is to generate advertising revenue. But for this, your channel needs to be linked to an AdSense account. In a nutshell, AdSense is Google’s advertising platform that allows content creators to earn revenue by displaying ads on their YouTube videos. Therefore, you also need a Google account to monetize your YouTube channel with ad revenue.

Once you’ve been approved by YouTube’s affiliate program and you’ve linked your YouTube channel to an AdSense account, you’ll be able to activate ads on your videos, which is a real game-changer as they provide advertisers with a powerful platform to reach a targeted audience while also enabling content creators to monetize their videos and earn revenue.

However, it’s important to find the right balance, because you don’t want your channel to be inundated with video ads, which could bore viewers. You need to strike a balance between maximising revenue and providing a good user experience for your viewers and subscribers.

It’s worth remembering that YouTube offers different advertising formats, including pre-roll ads, which appear before your video, mid-roll ads, which appear during longer videos, and display ads, which appear alongside your own YouTube video.

5. Generate money through affiliate marketing

Another great way to generate money is through affiliate marketing.

Affiliate marketing on YouTube offers content creators a lucrative opportunity to monetize their channels by promoting products or services to their audience in the content or descriptions of their videos using affiliate links. This can be easy money as they earn a commission for every sale or action generated through these links. Creators often embed product reviews, tutorials or recommendations seamlessly into their videos to encourage viewers to click on the affiliate links. Now, keep in mind that transparency is essential when disclosing affiliate relationships and, what’s more, you need to strategically place affiliate links in video descriptions and content to foster audience trust while maximising conversion potential. By optimising for search, tracking performance metrics and engaging with viewers, you can effectively leverage affiliate marketing to generate additional revenue and grow your channel.

6. Explore alternative revenue streams

As well as advertising revenue and affiliate marketing , there are several other monetization options on YouTube.

For example, you can offer your viewers the chance to subscribe to your channel for a monthly fee, and by signing up they receive benefits such as exclusive content, badges and emojis. If we go back to advertising for a moment, YouTube Premium subscribers pay a monthly fee to enjoy an ad-free viewing experience and access to exclusive content.

What’s more, if you have merchandise such as t-shirts, hoodies or accessories, you can display them on your channel using the merchandise shelf function and sell your products on your channel. This allows viewers to buy your merchandise directly from your videos, or you can even link your channel to an e-commerce platform such as Shopify.

There are lots of other ways to earn extra cash from your YouTube channel and the income potential is limitless. So, with that in mind, you should always look to diversify your sources of revenue, such as sponsored content, crowdfunding (e.g. Patreon) and selling digital products or services (e.g. online courses, ebooks, gift cards, etc.) to generate passive income.

7. Analyse your performance and stay compliant with YouTube’s policies

Video views are important, and you need to monitor your channel’s analytics regularly to track your progress and identify areas for improvement. Pay particular attention to metrics such as viewing time, audience retention and revenue generated from different sources. And make sure you use this data to refine your content strategy, optimise your monetization tactics and better understand the preferences and behaviour of your subscribers.

It’s important to ensure that your content complies with YouTube’s community guidelines and advertiser-friendly content policies to avoid demonetisation or penalties. To do this, familiarise yourself with YouTube’s rules on copyright, intellectual property and content restrictions, and make sure you create content suitable for all audiences.

We all love a good bar basement show. But what if your new music is a little unorthodox for your local scene, or what if you’ve got fans scattered around the world in a way that makes touring impractical?

What once would have been a major obstacle for upcoming artists is now no big deal at all. There are ways to reap some of the benefits of in-person live performances from anywhere, and with added benefits that you don’t get onstage.

By performing live on YouTube, you not only get to offer your fans live experiences, but you can take advantage of audience interactivity, the ability to drop links in the chat, description, or onscreen, and of course, the powers of the almighty algorithm to reach new potential fans who can drop in mid-performance.

Read on to find out how artists can build their community by performing live on YouTube 🔥

1. Why Choose YouTube for Livestreams?

In an era where digital presence is paramount, livestreaming is a great tool for musicians seeking to expand their reach and solidify their fan base. But there are lots of platforms out there with streaming capabilities. They all have something to offer, and you can go live on multiple at the same time.

But YouTube in particular, with its global accessibility, existing reach, and video features, stands as a testament to how artists can transcend geographical limitations and connect with audiences worldwide, fostering a sense of community and shared experience that traditional venues might not offer.

| Read also: How to make your music known on Youtube

One key difference in the feel of a livestream vs an in-person event is the chat. A rapid-fire live chat simulates the cheering of audience members next to you (except when they’re typing instead of screaming into your ear, you can actually understand what they’re saying!).

The chat transforms a live video broadcast into an interactive experience. Artists can engage with their audience in real-time, creating a relationship that feels personal and inclusive.

Features like polls let artists take song requests, drop links, and more to turn passive watchers into active participants in the performance, strengthening the artist-fan connection.

Like some other live streaming platforms, YouTube automatically saves lives as videos you can publish or leave private. However, the difference is that people are already used to browsing videos on YouTube, whereas they may not be on other platforms, like Twitch.

YouTube is a robust platform that’s been built up over a long time. It has lots of video features, like support for high-definition video, ensuring that live performances are not just heard, but also seen in the best possible light.

Archiving your performances as videos means allowing new fans to discover past shows and providing a continuously growing content library that your audience can return to.

You want to promote your music with results?
2. Examples of Successful Approaches

Artists have leveraged YouTube Live in various creative ways, demonstrating the platform’s versatility and its potential to cater to diverse musical genres and audience preferences:

Drawing Crowds through Collaboration: Some artists like My Analog Journal, a channel that hosts DJs from around the world showing off their sets, have found success by collaborating, pooling their audiences and increasing visibility. The DJs that appear on My Analog Journal bring their audiences with them, and those audiences discover the other DJs on the channel. Together, they grow, and YouTube pushes their archived performances further, even to viewers that have never watched a DJ set before. This strategy can attract casual browsers and fans of collaborating artists, significantly broadening an artist’s reach.

Niche Spaces: YouTube Live proves particularly beneficial for artists in niche genres. Take Ill-Advised Records, for example. Specializing in dark, horror-inspired Lo-Fi Hip-Hop, this record label started producing long Dark Lo-Fi Lives that were archived on the channel. What they put out (much of it being from the artist Dated) is so unique that the viewers always come back to the same place when they want to hear these creepy tracks. It’s created a surprisingly loyal and involved community for a label (and where? You guessed it, the live chat!). The label even sells merch, like traditional physical editions of music, but also items laser-targeted at the type of person who listens to Dark Lo-Fi that samples classic Halloween cartoons and HP Lovecraft audiobooks: horror short story anthologies.

The takeaway? Thanks to the YouTube algorithm, artists in super niche genres that previously would have had trouble organizing live performances can find their audience, no matter their location. Artists can cultivate a dedicated fan base, engage with them intimately, and yes, monetize their art through merchandise sales, channel memberships, or exclusive content, beyond the traditional ad revenue.

Taking it Offline: Another fun example is Saxquatch. This saxophone cover artist one day decided to put on a Bigfoot suit and a pair of sunglasses and crank out a few tunes. Perhaps fueled by the pun, the look, the quality of his covers (not to be understated!), or a combination thereof, people began to share his weekly lives on YouTube. The momentum gained from YouTube live streaming ended up paying off big time for Saxquatch, who’s now performing in-person (or in-hominid, at least).

While some people do go to concerts for artists they’ve never heard of, you can’t deny it’s much easier to drop into an online livestream and see what’s popping, especially on a platform you may already be spending time on.

3. What are you waiting for?

YouTube Live is not just a medium for uploading your music videos; it’s a multifaceted platform that offers artists the tools to grow their audience, engage with fans in meaningful ways, and create a sustainable artistic presence.

Whether it’s through interactive live chats, the strategic use of archived content, or the seamless integration of online success into offline opportunities, YouTube Live holds the promise of being a significant strategic move for artists looking to broaden their horizons, connect with a global audience, and innovate in the ways they share their music and engage with fans.

In harnessing the power of YouTube Live, artists are not just broadcasting their performances; they’re building a community, one stream at a time.

Today, I would like us to go through two things together. Firstly, clarify how Youtube works, and more precisely how the Youtube algorithm works, and then, once we have all the parameters, see how to use them to our advantage and gain video views. These are two key components that will help you stand out from other Youtubers and/or creators.

If there is a search engine that, for the last 10 years has become a reference in terms of discovery of emerging artists, artistic showcase for professional singers, musicians, and music videos, it’s Youtube. More than a simple website, Youtube is an opportunity for any artist, beginner or confirmed, to establish its reputation, its brand image and its credibility. Not to mention the countless number of artists who had their first successes as a Youtuber, and who today are known in their country, or even internationally. But the question remains: how to gain views on their music videos? Go on YouTube and let’s get started!

1. How does the YouTube algorithm work?

1.1 How are views counted on Youtube ?

A viewer goes on Youtube, lands on your channel page, clicks on one of your videos, and watches it for at least 30 seconds. Here is the exact path that a user goes through to gain views on Youtube. Gaining viewership on your music videos requires a great mastery of music marketing to increase the click-through rate (the number of people to click on your video out of the total number of people who see the thumbnail). Working on stand-out video thumbnails and catchy titles is therefore, essential.

Many artists will say that “view and subscriber counts don’t mean anything”. They’re right, it doesn’t mean EVERYTHING. But the view count on Youtube, as well as the number of subscribers on Youtube are important. They bring legitimacy to the artist. This is proof that what they do appeals to people and is interesting to watch. So, make sure to include a call-to-action and encourage people to subscribe. But the views on Youtube will above all, inform the Youtube algorithm of the good video quality! This is a very good thing, let me explain why. The goal of Youtube, it is to make people stay as long as possible on the Youtube platform. So if the algorithm considers that your work is liked and makes people stay on the platform, it will make your video content visible to more people. In other words, more views lead to more views.

1.2 What is the impact of Youtube likes, comments, followers, and shares?

When talking about making your Youtube videos stand out, we can’t only talk about increasing your views (or click-through rate) with an eye-catching title and thumbnail. There are other equally important factors that can have a considerable effect on the reputation of an artist’s videos and their youtube channel.

First of all, the retention rate (or watch time) is key in YouTube marketing. This is the time that users spend on average in front of your video on YouTube. This is an indicator that carries a lot of weight in the algorithm. Logically, this shows the effectiveness to keep its users as long as possible on Youtube.

It is also important to try to maximize all forms of “reactions” to your videos, namely likes, comments and shares. First of all because engagement pleases the Youtube algorithm, but also because engagement encourages engagement. When choosing between a full and an empty restaurant you will tend to go to the one that the most amount of people are in without even looking at the menu. It’s the same thing if you’re hesitating between watching a video with 200 views and one with 2-million views.

Incentivizing shares (directly or indirectly) also has a strong impact on your overall visibility on the Youtube app. Because, when someone shares your video on their Instagram account, all their followers know about it. So it’s an interesting leveraging tool.

| Also read: How to use Instagram stories to promote your music

In terms of the subscriber count (the number of people subscribed to you) on Youtube, it is more complex. Because a channel with a lot of subscribers will not necessarily be more highlighted than a small channel. Because a high subscriber count does not always mean high engagement rates, these subscribers will not necessarily watch new videos. Therefore, the algorithm won’t feed this to new or existing users. A perfect example of how not pleasing the Youtube algorithm could penalize you.

The Youtube algorithm can be both rewarding and penalizing depending on certain characteristics of your channel and your videos. In summary: aim for quantity, without forgetting about quality!

1.3 How are Youtube trends created?

We’ve spoken a lot about the promotion of videos on Youtube, but how does the platform actually do it? How do you go viral? What are the possibilities that the platform has at its disposal to ensure that a video is seen by a large number of people? Well, here they are:

First of all, there are what we call “suggestions“. When you click on a Youtube video, to the right of it, you have a list of video suggestions from Youtube. It’s like Spotify or Netflix, it gives your video guaranteed visibility if it ends up in this area. The Youtube homepage is also a high visibility area. The chances of a user clicking on your video are effectively increased tenfold because it’s one of the first videos the user will see on the platform. And finally, there is the “Explore” tab. The tab where you will find the “music” section, includes a classification and many Youtube playlists with different categories: future hits, latino, etc. (just like Spotify).

Now, how do you get on the Explore page on Youtube? What about the Home page on Youtube? It’s simple, by increasing the number of likes, views, comments, subscribers, etc. So it comes down to how to get more views on your videos; let’s see how one does this ….

2. How to gain views on your music videos?

Let’s start with the external ways to increase the number of views on Youtube; where the sole purpose is to redirect users to Youtube.

2.1 Medias

The first source of external traffic that an artist can use is the media. Radio, television or newspapers are channels not to be neglected when promoting your music, and especially your Youtube channel. Speaking of media, the Groover platform is the perfect tool to contact journalists, media, Youtube channels and other music industry professionals who might be interested in talking about your project.

2.2 Social Media (Especially Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit)

Second source of external traffic, social media. As you know, Youtube is quite different in comparison to other social media platforms(Instagram, Facebook or TikTok) because of the perishability of its content. Getting 200 views on your Youtube video in one month doesn’t mean you won’t make 20,000 views the following month. This is not necessarily the case for Instagram, for example. If you want to have a better chance of being featured by Youtube, gain the most amount of views in the first moments of publishing your new video! Once again, because it shows the algorithm the high potential of your video.

Sharing on your other social media platforms may help you gain this initial push. Essentially, using your existing community (small or large) to gain views on your new videos. Making an Instagram story, post or TikTok that shows the most thrilling part can be interesting, right? Always redirecting your audience with a link is super powerful.

2.3 Organic search engine optimization on Google: SEO and website

After talking about advertising (paid traffic) to promote videos on Youtube, let’s now talk about SEO. SEO is a key tool to bring traffic organically on your content. It is a matter of asking the following question: How to optimize music videos on YouTube?

Carefully crafting the title and description of your video is essential. I also invite you, under the description, to add important keywords, adwords and hashtags that the audience may be looking for. This is key for the Youtube SEO!

Don’t forget one important thing: a Youtube video can also be referenced on Google! Optimizing your videos and overall YouTube account is key (don’t forget your Google account too!). The Tubebuddy extension or Answer the public website are ideal tools to know the most searched keywords on Youtube and Google. Use a keyword tool to improve your search results.

With Youtube for Artists, you can take a deeper dive into Youtube analytics and discover more about your audience and overall performance. There is also Youtube help and tutorials that will help you and your channel to be as optimized as possible.

| Get your music known on Youtube, thanks to Youtube for Artists

3. Why is visibility on Youtube important?

I invite you to put all these tactics into practice today for a good reason: they are valuable. Making thousands or tens of thousands of views on Youtube is not only about satisfying your ego as an artist. Many other benefits await for you. First of all, you will prove your legitimacy as an artist to the general public, just like the restaurant. You will not be able to become a reference in this industry without using Youtube. Moreover, you can use your Youtube channel as a showcase. What better way to convince a music label or producer to trust you than a growing Youtube channel!

Getting a lot of views on Youtube is also a good opportunity to progress artistically! Why? Because you can easily turn your videos into a goldmine of feedback. Youtube is like a showroom, on stage 24 hours a day, and where people come and go continuously. Imagine the progress you could have if you leave a “tell me what you think” on the door of your gigs!

Don’t hesitate to use the Groover platform to get quick and easy feedback from hundreds of qualified music professionals.

4. How to find ideas for YouTube videos ?

4.1 Do you need a big budget to create good quality videos ?

When an artist wants to make a music video, the first obstacle they will have to face is deciding how much to invest to create this piece of content. A good director, competent cameramen, but also a nice location, a dozen extras or special effects specialists … all of this is expensive.

That being said, as an emerging artist, there are simple ways to drastically reduce your expenses for your next video. First of all, as far as framing and editing is concerned, I can invite you to go to audiovisual schools. Knowing that many students can or must do professional internships during their studies, you understand that by offering students to collaborate, it’s a win-win situation. You shoot your video for free because the internship is unpaid and the student has the opportunity to rent professional equipment for free at his school, and he has a professional experience to add to his CV (nowadays, recruiters give a lot of importance to this, and take less and less students who leave school without professional experience). This tip is a real nugget! It has worked for almost all the artists I have coached with LYD’R Coaching. Don’t underestimate this possibility.

| Check out: 9 Tips for small budget music video productions

That being said, as an emerging artist, there are simple ways to drastically reduce your expenses for your next music video. First of all, as far as framing and editing is concerned, I invite you to go to audiovisual schools. This tip is a real hidden gem! It has worked for almost all the artists I have coached with LYD’R Coaching. Don’t underestimate this possibility.

Finally, you can also plan to shoot several music videos at the same time in the same location. How about renting a restaurant? Shoot a first scene in the main room, a second one at the bar, and then a third one in the kitchen!

4.2 How and where does one find ideas for music videos?

When it comes to video design, many artists spend a lot of time and effort comming up with an idea for a buzzworthy video. You want your video to be out of the ordinary, I can understand that. But is the virality of a video clip necessarily proportional to the complexity of the basic idea? I don’t think so. Nobody will tell me that Christine and the Queens’ videos don’t work. However, any artist starting out has the budget to make the same.

If however, you are really short of video ideas and even after 2 days spent on Youtube looking for inspiration you still have nothing, do one simple and effective thing: a lyrics video. Filmora is a good tool to make a quality animated clip, with your lyrics scrolling. You can also add a passage where we see a video of you singing. It’s very easy to do and believe me, it’s much better than a simple still cover image.

Conclusion

To sum up, if there was one question you could ask yourself today to move forward, it would be this: how can I make my next content on Youtube make people stay on Youtube longer than my competitors? Find the answer and in 2 years you will be on top, I guarantee it. Gaining views on your clips is accessible to everyone!

No matter the discipline, no matter the project, the logic will always remain the same: offer quality, offer value to the people around you, and you will be rewarded.

Now it’s up to you. Be consistent, and enjoy what you do…

Every month, more than a billion people, scattered around the world, visit YouTube. Every day, millions of videos are posted, which is a lot to compete with. However, it’s not impossible to stand out from the crowd. It’s the first place to easily get your music known and your sound and visual identity discovered via video clips. Professional or amateur, it’s a great tool to use as long as the music is good!

You should know that there is an official blog, called YouTube For Artists. This go-to catalog has detailed resources, tools, news and trends for artists and musicians who want to both grow their careers and nurture their fanbase. Create a “visual portfolio”, keep your fans informed by sharing your news, bring subscribers exclusive content. With the right tools, you have everything you need to better manage your musical career.

Here are three tips and tricks to best promote your music on YouTube!

Introduction: YouTube For Artists is a reference!

First of all, if you are a musician starting out on YouTube and/or you manage your own channel, whatever your audience, you should know that you will find all the answers to your questions on the YouTube For Artists platform. This service offered by YouTube allows artists to better manage their presence and credibility. Through the platform you are able to verify your account and let users know that you are an official account creating a sense of professionalism. This status allows, for example, to be found more easily in the search bar and to be directly linked to specific keywords on Youtube.

Upload your music to Groover and get in direct contact with the best labels and professionals in the music industry – guaranteed to be heard and returned within 7 days!

To take full advantage of a verified YouTube account, signing up with a digital music distributor is mandatory. The distributor will then share your music to all streaming services, including YouTube. They should also send you the royalties owed to you and manage the revenue transactions generated your music.

However, it is possible to work independently and not have a label yet. YouTube is a great way to present your musical project in your own way visually, which we will discuss in more depth below.

1. Youtube playlists: a good way to get your music discovered

On YouTube, playlists are a great way to invite users to browse someones discography and catalog. It’s like an interactive CV, a real “visual portfolio”, as we like to call it! You can create a playlist that includes content hosted on other channels and/or content uploaded on your own Youtube channel. To do so, it’s very simple.

First, select a clip that you want to transfer to a playlist.

Below the video, click on the “Add to” icon.

Select a playlist you have already created, or click on “Create a new playlist”. In this case, you can add a name to the list, like an album, an EP, a musical genre, a live session name…

Now it’s about knowing what kind of playlists you want to create. It should be reflective of your sound and visual identity. It should show who you are as an artist. You can take advantage of this to add in any video interviews you have done, live shows or sessions, demos, behind the scenes footage… anything you’ve done that lives on the platform. Choices are endless so, we recommend to choose quality over quantity. Select, sort and create rewarding content for the user around the project. The end-goal is to attract the user not only to the project, but to you as an artist. So, make it interesting and make them want to subscribe and follow for more.

2. Covers, an easy way to get known on YouTube

If you are launching your musical project and you want to get known on YouTube, covers can help to grow an audience. Indeed, most of the people who search for the name of your musical project on the platform already know you. However, covers allow your project to appear in new search algorithms. This is a good way to develop your audience; especially with covers of popular songs. The potential fan can relate to your style of music and will hopefully want to learn more about you. For the video: don’t panic if it is “homemade”, because you can emphasize the quality of the interpretation. However, if the video is high quality this works in your favor!

Finally, if your cover generates some buzz, it may even end up in a playlist created by the artist whose song you just covered… Not bad, right?

Beware of copyright law and restrictions!

Copyright is a crucial issue for any artist posting a cover song on YouTube. Indeed, original works are protected under two criteria: the pure audio recording and the composition, i.e. the lyrics. Licensing requirements depend on several factors, countries and also on the way you distribute your cover. That’s why it’s not easy to generate revenue directly from a cover, although there are agreements between YouTube and publishers for some cases.

To learn more about copyright, we invite you to visit the YouTube Copyright Center and other resources that explain the impact of copyright on the music industry.

| Read also: How to post cover songs on YouTube legally

3. Cherish your community of fans on Youtube

YouTube is a platform that differs greatly from its direct competitors (Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer …) because it allows the artist to communicate more directly with his fans, inform subscribers of his news, establish a new proximity. Maintaining and respecting his community is a way to build loyalty, to make him more attentive to new releases, to create a commitment and a craze.

In the “Community” tab on YouTube, artists don’t hesitate to share their news via posts based on a striking visual (an image, a GIF), giving a date, an appointment, a release not to be missed or even links to merchandising, tour dates… Exclusive photos of the live show can also be revealed. Finally, you can also take your fans on a journey by offering them backstage excerpts from a video shoot or a concert. This way of showing the “behind the scenes” of the project allows you to humanize the artist/fan relationship which can sometimes seem unbalanced and a bit superfluous.

Releasing a musical project is something you work on relentlessly for months or even years. In the final stretch, you can get caught up in a spiral of non-artistic work, the communication strategy. In these moments, we need solid supports and Groover is one of them, communicating via social media is another one.

By the way, what are the most useful social networks for your digital communication in your opinion? This is a question we will try to answer.

Here’s an article that should give you some good and innovative ideas for your music promotion. Using some inspiring examples, take these ideas and adapt it to your artistic identity. These should help you gain visibility when you use social media because simply posting, is not enough. You need to have a marketing strategy, an editorial line, in short, to be sharp to increase your notoriety.

Social Networking Tip #1: CREATE A DISCORD GROUP

Surprisingly, we’re not starting with the most obvious of social media platforms. That’s precisely why it’s interesting, it’s very differentiating. First of all, what is Discord? For those who are not familiar with the platform, Discord is a text and audio chat service. Basically it’s a chat, in which you can also exchange by talking.

The point of being on the platform is to be able to talk directly to your fans. You will get closer to them in a considerable way. The fact of being live will favor the authenticity of the exchanges. The benefit is twofold. On the one hand, your listeners will get unfiltered answers to their questions and on the other, you will get sincere feedback on your music.

If your goal when setting up a communication strategy is to create affect, Discord is the way to go. One artist who has understood this is Kikesa. Recently, he released a project called “Rubi”. To boost its release, he decided to take care of his presence on socials by creating a private room on Discord. This allowed pre-order access to the album. People who had access to it were able to talk directly with the artist and exchange between Kikesa fans. It’s a great way to create a close-knit and engaged community.

Tip #2: INTEGRATE A LIVE TIKTOK INTO YOUR COMMUNICATION STRATEGY

If you are currently learning about artistic communication strategy, you must have seen TikTok over and over again. We will spare you the verse about the importance of your presence on this essential media, you already know it. We also need to point out the live feature on TikTok. Because we hear a little less about it, and yet it is important.

When you decide to be active on social media, hashtags are not enough; you have to use all its features. On TikTok even more than other social networks, the algorithm is king. To flatter it and drive to your content, show that you are able to use all the tools that the platform offers. Doing lives is one of them.

Obviously, it’s not just about pleasing TikTok, about being a good student, no. Like with Discord, you will stand out from others if you present yourself to the public on TikTok.
Warning: before you poor your heart and soul into the project, ask yourself if your identity compatible with the targets you could reach on TikTok? We’re talking about a relatively young community, even if it’s been changing lately. This is one of the basic principles in communication: understand who you are talking to use the right communication channel. Don’t make a mistake in your targeting, you therefore won’t waste time.

The recent representative example is that of Rosalía. Her action is exemplary because it is done live on TikTok for TikTok. It’s not a live stream intended for other uses, which would have been redirected to the platform by default. It is a performance filmed vertically, to be viewed on your phone to understand all the interest. Thinking of content for social media first is a very good practice in terms of communication strategy.

| Also read: 4 content ideas to promote my music on TikTok

Tip #3: LIVE ON THE TWITCH SOCIAL NETWORK

Another good way to reduce the distance with your audience, to break the wall that can separate you from them. Twitch is the live streaming platform that seduces more and more content creators, influencers, and also musicians. Why such a craze? It’s true that you can do live streams on almost every social network now. But one of the great strengths of the platform is its chat. And the way the millions of active users who have taken it over use it.

When you include Twitch in your communication strategy, you have to take chat into account. You will be able to involve your viewers during your live broadcast. It’s the ideal platform, because you’ll create interaction with your audience and show them directly that you see and take into account their remarks by making them have an impact on the operation. The more you involve them, the more they will be engaged, it’s a virtuous circle.

Twitch music is not yet at its prime, let’s be clear. The platform has a flaw, it’s the fact that it is ultra strict on copyrights. We won’t complain about it, but it’s very difficult for an artist to give their consent to use their music. Like YouTube for example. When you see a musician on the platform, they will be there to create or perform live music. In these cases Twitch remains flexible.

One artist who has taken advantage of the platform is Guillaume Ferran. He performs live shows during which he composes live music, alone or accompanied by a guest. For example, November Ultra recently went live to promote its music and play its tracks live. By the way, creating synergies is a good practice of social networks to remember.

Social Networking Tip #4: USE INSTAGRAM AS AN INTIMATE JOURNAL

We all (almost) use Instagram, that’s a fact. So it’s convenient to reach a maximum of people, but it’s double-edged because it’s not easy to stand out. What you need to understand to succeed in attracting the attention of your followers is that it’s not enough to find the right hashtags. It’s essential to talk about yourself. Show your face as much as possible, and tell your life story. The more a potential fan knows about you, the more likely they get attached to you.

November Ultra understood it well. We love the tone that the musician uses to promote her music on social media, and especially her Instagram account. She does not hesitate to detail her feelings in the captions of her publications. She does not hide her slackness, nor her joys. It’s far from a sanitized and calculated communication; she takes advantage of Instagram to show who she is and not who she would like to be. It may seem cynical to talk about including sincerity in communication strategy, but it is nevertheless essential. You’ll get less of a headache, you make it easier on yourself by being yourself.

Tip #5: USE THE PREMIERE FUNCTION ON YOUTUBE

No better example to talk about Premiere than the one of BTS and their track “Butter”. The concept? Build hype around the release of a single. The idea is to give an appointment to your audience. Such day at such time, your last title will be put online. On the side, a chat is integrated, you can react and discover at the same time the reactions of the other viewers who discover the track live, just like you.

For the person who discovers the track, there is a strong feeling of belonging to a community: we were there, together, discovering for the very first time a track at the very beginning of its life. This feeling will help to trigger shares on social media, with the aim of consolidating their fan status.

In addition, having a specific date and time to provide to your fans allows you to rely on a tangible temporality, on which you can communicate.

With these tips, we hope you’ll get as many ideas as possible to get your music out there. Remember: keep it real, nothing should be forced when you are present on social media. All the ideas that are delivered here are not there to be reproduced identically, but in your way, with your means. Your image on social networks is important, take care of it !

Activate the algorithms of the streaming platforms, put all the chances on your side and stand out from the crowd. Make your streams take off on Spotify, Deezer, Youtube, Soundcloud, and other streaming platforms… It is easier said than done, for sure! But Groover is there to help you, because of course the platform allows you to contact the best media, playlists, radios and professionals of the music industry, but also gives you regularly its best advice on the Groover Blog.

💡 Try to spend as much time promoting your music as you do creating it, it would be too unfair otherwise. With Groover and his blog by your side, successfully releasing your single, EP or album on streaming platforms should no longer be insurmountable.

1. Our best tips for generating more streams on Spotify, without cheating

With the competition and constant evolution of the music world, Spotify is the essential streaming platform for a good music promotion strategy. The streams your music will generate will help you build credibility for your project and multiply your number of listeners. However, buying streams would be a mistake, no matter which streaming platform you use. Not only your distributor or Spotify might realize it, but people are not fooled and you risk losing the credibility of your music. If you create good music, pay attention to its compositional and production quality, and carefully prepare your music promotion strategy, you should be able to do well without cheating on Spotify. There’s nothing like a gradual, organic evolution on Spotify and for your self-esteem. Take the time to do it right. There are many tools to help you do this:

Spotify for Artists

Spotify for Artists is a must-have tool for all artists, whether you’re indie or with a label – in which case it’s usually your team that will use it. It’s the tool that allows you to add photos, a biography, links to your social networks, etc. to Spotify.

It also gives you access to your listening statistics, shows you which playlists you’ve been added to and how your subscriber count has changed.

You can also verify your artist profile with Spotify for Artists. The little blue tick is available to any artist who claims it.

How to get on Spotify playlists?

Third-party playlists are playlists created by Spotify users, just like you and me. They have a strong taste in music and a sense of organization to put together tracks that have something in common (mood, time of day, country, etc.). Some third-party playlist curators have managed to gather thousands of subscribers on Spotify. With a little bit of research, you can find the contact of these playlist curators. These people are more accessible than Spotify staff, so take advantage of that. The trick is to get in touch with the right playlists, the ones that match your music, and send them a concise and friendly message.
How to get featured on Spotify editorial playlists?

Editorial playlists are the playlists designed by the Spotify team. If you want to try your luck with them, you’ll have to do it right after you’ve uploaded your tracks via your digital distributor. It will take a few weeks for Spotify’s editorial team to listen to your music and decide if it fits into one of their playlists.

Editorial playlists account for about a third of Spotify’s listening time and have millions of subscribers. So landing in at least one of them would be amazing for your music!

💡 Choose the track you pitch carefully as you can only submit one track per release to the editorial playlists.

How to grow your own Spotify playlists and gain followers?

Creating your own playlists is like making yourself a curator of third party playlists. You can see the strategic intent right away I guess! The idea here is to compose a playlist of tracks that resemble your artistic identity, gain lots of subscribers, and subtly integrate your music.

How much do artists get paid on Spotify?

The compensation of artists through streaming is still a mysterious subject. Loud & Clear, a Spotify initiative, wanted to shed some light on the subject. Click here to learn more.

How to make your music known on Youtube

Youtube is one of the biggest channels to gain visibility. Indeed, even if you have to watch 2 or 3 ads for a single video, Youtube remains a free service and a gold mine to discover new content.

But how do you get noticed when there is so much great content out there?

Start by having your Youtube channel checked.

Have you made a visual for Youtube? The interest of Youtube is precisely to be able to watch videos. The more you show your universe, the more chances you have to get attention. A lyrics video, a clip, everything is good to take so don’t miss it because of a lack of budget or lack of knowledge. With a phone and an idea, you can already do a lot.

Is your video ready? Now the important thing is to concentrate on promoting it. And to do this, before even talking about money, focus on the wording, the hashtags, the thumbnail, etc. These are small details that, a little later, will make your video more attractive. These are small details that, added together, will make all the difference.

Collaborations with other artists and creators can also obviously be beneficial for your visibility.

After that, if you don’t want to lose people along the way, try to have released at least one video beforehand so that they have something of yours to look at. Otherwise, there is little chance that they will subscribe.

Paid solution that you probably know -> Youtube Ads. Proven effectiveness!

And finally, don’t hesitate to contact popular Youtube channels so that they give you strength.

Because the final objective of all this is to federate a community around your musical project. Quality, promotion, quantity.

Deezer for Creators

Just like Spotify for Artist, Deezer for Creators is a tool available to artists and their teams to boost their Deezer artist profile, strengthen their image on the streaming platform and analyze their streams.

Two reasons to be interested in Deezer: the artists’ compensation!

💡Deezer has set out to conquer emerging artists to help them break into the music business by creating Deezer Next, a new international program that aims to support and grow young artists.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-15166 size-full" title="Deezer Next, the program created by the streaming platform Deezer, which aims to support artists in the development of their musical projects.

Artists’ pay on Deezer

The French streaming platform, Deezer, has long wanted to propose a distribution of income based on the tastes (and listening) of its users. A system called “User Centric”, which allows a fairer distribution of income for artists, the money generated by a subscription goes to the artists that the subscriber listens to, and not to the most famous artists – as is the case on Spotify for example. A system that would help fight against stream purchases and fake accounts.

But despite all the goodwill of Deezer, this system seems difficult to implement when the music industry as a whole is not ready for such a change.
