As artists, we prioritize creativity and artistry above all else. The beauty of making music and the fulfillment we get from it is what we’re in it for, but it doesn’t seem to be enough to survive in today’s music business. Artists now have to wear all the hats necessary to keep their career running themselves, including all things financial.

The money side of music is unfortunately rather complicated, but that is partly due to how many different streams of income there are in the business, which is a great thing. No matter your niche or skillset, there is a way to make money off of your work.

Signing with a label is a great way to ensure that someone is overseeing your finances and can be trusted to bring you new income opportunities. If you’re looking to get signed, Groover is partnered with a number of labels you can pitch your music to directly. You’ll get a response within 7 days or your credits back – it’s worth a shot!

How Do Artists Make Money?

Artists are paid similarly to freelancers. Earnings are project-based and are either lump sum payments or percentages of future profits. This mostly depends on the type of income stream being pursued. Here are the main ways to make money in music and how payment works

Streaming and radio (royalties)

Physical sales of CDs, vinyls (payment per sale)

Live shows (payment per ticket sale)

Studio sessions (one-time payment)

Features (one-time fee and/or royalties)

Label advance (one-time payment)

Sync placements (one-time payment)

Merchandise (payment per sale)

Selling beats or samples (payment per sale)

Teaching (payment per gig or salary)

Social media (pay rate based on following and views)

Brand partnerships (payment per post or shoot)

Regardless of the income stream, you are providing a service in your field of expertise, which means you should be compensated for it. Almost all forms of payment can be negotiated as well – just make sure you understand what is and is not a realistic amount to ask for.

Survey from 2022 by TwoStoryMelody

Royalty-Based Payments

For royalty-based earnings like streaming/radio and features, you’ll need to arrange an agreement with your producer and co-writers for every song you release if you’re independent. Whether you’re the main artist or a feature, everyone who contributed to the creation of the song must agree on each person’s percentage of publishing and master splits (who gets what share of each type of royalties). If you’re signed to a label, the royalty percentage you’re entitled to is stated in your contract.

You can estimate your streaming royalties using this tool which calculates your Spotify streaming royalties.

One-Time Payments

For one-time payments like studio sessions and features (and teaching, if you’re freelance), you can set your own rate. This is the alternative to getting royalties after you’ve helped create a song; if you prefer a one-time fee, you can set your rate for a guest verse on a song or a couple hours of studio time to play an instrument or sing vocals someone needs on their track. You get paid in full for your work, but do not see a penny from the song afterwards. The other lump sum type of income, sync placements (when a TV show, movie, video game, or commercial buys the license to your song), is usually proposed by the network that wants to use your music. The amount can be negotiated, but largely depends on how big your buyer is and how much they’re willing to pay. On a platform like Collabhouse for instance, you can upload your (back) calatog, get your music discovered for potential sync placements and earn passive income.

Label advances are an exception here – they are a lump sum payment given to an artist for signing with a record label that they can live off of and spend as they please, but the label decides the amount and expects it to be paid back in full before an artist sees any royalties from their music.

Per-Sale Payments

Live shows, merchandise, physical CDs and vinyls, and selling beats all generate income per sale. These prices are also set by you and your team, but must be at minimum a little more than what it costed to put together if you want to break even. If hiring a sound engineer, band members, and renting equipment for a live gig costed X amount of money, you’ll need to charge audience members X + 10 to turn a profit. Beats and samples are easier to price because they’re entirely up to you and don’t require other people’s time and resources but your own.

| Check out: How to find a booker

Pricing Yourself Correctly

There are many factors to take into consideration when you monetize your work. Here are the 5 most important:

Experience – When charging for a service, take into consideration how much time you’ve been in the business for. Usually, more experienced artist charge higher rates than those just starting out.

Expenses – How much is it going to cost you to do the job? Do you have to travel, buy materials, hire people, book rooms or studios, buy a meal? All of these things cost money and you shouldn’t be paying for them out of your own pocket on the job. Calculate those expenses and add them to your quote.

Availability – How busy are you? Is it touring season? Availability is an underrated factor to consider. If a job comes at an inconvenient time/date, you can charge a higher rate to at least cover what you would have made if you’d taken another opportunity.

Average pricing – What are other people charging for the same job? Understand the market you’re working in. Have you reached a career accolade that often hikes up someone’s rate – say, getting a big collaboration or being nominated for an award? Look to people in a similar spot in their career and compare your prices.

Necessity – Do you have bills to pay at the end of the month? This is the reason why a lot of musicians blindly say yes to all job opportunities: they need the money. However, instead of just taking what you can get, calculate how much money you need to be making per week/month and figure out fair prices for your rates from there.

Once you take these factors into consideration, write your rates down and make them official. This way it is fair game for everyone you work with, and no one will feel blindsided.

A common misconception, especially in the music industry, is that a low rate = more work, and this is NOT TRUE. The price you set reflects what you believe the value of your work is, so underselling yourself will ultimately send the wrong message. REMEMBER: when you monetize your work, you can always go lower, but if you start low you will have to fight twice as hard to increase your rates. The people around you will get used to what you currently charge and may be put off by a sudden hike in pricing. To monetize your work effectively, find a healthy balance between showing your worth and staying relatively affordable.

Be Straightforward from the Get-Go

When it comes to payment, do not just assume what another person is thinking. Right at the gate, ask a potential collaborator their rate, or let them know yours. Conversations about money can be uncomfortable, so make sure everyone is on the same page before you begin working together. Royalty-based earnings are dependent on how much each person contributed to a work, so that can wait, but make sure you know who’s a flat fee kind of worker vs. who’s down to see what happens.

Whatever all parties decide on, put it in writing. Some sort of written agreement can come incredibly handy in the future and can dissolve any dispute you may have. If you are worried about coming off a certain way to others by wanting a written agreement, DON’T BE. Anyone in music knows how messy it can get if no one stays on top of things – you’ll be doing everyone a favor by taking care of it right away.

| Check out: Music Rights and how they work

You Can Say No

Remember that you can say no to jobs! Though you may be eager to work, if you don’t think you’d getting paid fairly, don’t do it. Most people are willing to negotiate, but if you’re working with a company, venue, or group that has leverage and isn’t budging, it’s ok to turn down the gig. Trust your gut and stick to your values when accepting work.

The Bartering System

Despite so many available income streams in music, the most popular and common form of compensation in the music industry is none other than favors. When first starting out, musicians and artists often don’t have the funds to afford a top of the line collaborator (producer, songwriter, manager, etc) so much of the industry is based on a mutually understood “you help me out and I’ll help you out” system. This is one of the best parts of music – everyone starts out by collaborating for the purpose of learning, networking, and giving each other a hand. The foundation of the music industry is personal relationships, so build your circle by working for free.

The only potential downside to this is that someone will expect your services to stay free, even as you climb the ranks in your career. If this is something you want to avoid, mentioning that you’ve begun to charge others but can make an exception for them the next few times can be a good thing to do. It will create an understanding that the value of your work as increased, but that you care about your relationship with them.

In other cases, another collaborator’s work value has also increased and you both continue to enjoy making music together and love the output – no need to charge if it is a mutual understanding. Trust your instincts when you feel as though you’re not getting enough out of a collaboration on your end and need to begin charging for your time.

The Internet has changed the traditional model of the music industry. In today’s digital age, it is quite possible to distribute your music and reach many potential fans without the help of a record company, but that doesn’t mean learning the secrets of how to become successful in music has gotten any easier. Many independent artists fall into traps that can be detrimental to their careers and prevent them from succeeding in music.

Yet these pitfalls are almost always avoidable in most cases. So, we are here to help you reach success in the music industry and in this article we have decided to share 7 mistakes to avoid if you want to become successful in music.

1. How to become successful in music by… uploading songs to platforms and just waiting?

If you want to achieve success in the music business, you’ll have to engage in hard work far beyond simply placing your single on streaming services like Apple Music or Spotify, where more than 100,000 new music tracks are released daily. Without additional efforts, your recordings, even if masterfully crafted, risk being lost amidst the vast ocean of content. To become very successful and not just another artist who has not been successful, embracing the music promotion stage is vital.

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking your job ends once your songs are mastered and ready for release. Many independent artists make the mistake of allocating their entire budget to music production, neglecting the essential aspect of marketing. However, to be successful in music, a significant portion of your resources should be aimed at marketing strategies.

Utilizing tools like Groover, engaging with social media to enhance visibility, and contacting playlist curators are imperative steps. Mistakes are inevitable, but they’re also valuable lessons that help you achieve success in your music career. Through these experiences, you’ll learn the most effective ways to promote your music project, eventually leading you to find the right partner or even secure a record deal.

Adopting a mindset focused on perseverance, learning how to navigate the industry, and possibly finding a mentor can make the difference between success and obscurity. Setting goals, networking with others in the industry, and constantly improving your songwriting and composition skills are also keys to a successful music career. In addition, embracing personal development, overcoming self-doubt, and taking action towards your long-term vision will help you become more successful.

| Check out: How to get more streams on Spotify?

2. How to become successful in music by… doing it all yourself?

While immersing yourself in all facets of your job is crucial for becoming successful, remember that embarking on a self-produced project doesn’t mean you have to go it alone.

It’s easy to lose perspective on your own work, so don’t hesitate to seek advice and assistance. This approach not only broadens your perspective but also equips you with valuable insights necessary for navigating the music industry effectively. Beyond your personal entourage and fans, seek advice from people who work in the music industry.

On Groover, professionals you send your music to give you written feedback on your song within 7 days.

On the platform, you can send your music to mentors (business managers, coaches, sound engineers or other professionals in the field) who have been carefully selected for their ability to give advice to artists, whether it be on the production of the project or the project as a whole.

3. Not being consistent

A post on social media the day your title is released is not enough to promote it.

Social media plays an important role in the career of a musician hoping for success. It allows you to grow your fan base by having access to millions of people looking for new artists.

Successful individuals in music often share traits such as humility, passion for music, and perseverance against obstacles. They understand that success in life—and specifically in a music career—requires more than just talent; it requires a concerted effort to market and make music that resonates with audiences. Thus, to be successful in life and in music, one must work hard, embrace failures as learning opportunities, and never stop pursuing their dreams, no matter the obstacles they face.

In order to gain real fans who will support you for the many years to come, it is essential to regularly post truly engaging content. Otherwise, your subscribers will end up getting bored and unsubscribing.

Post several times a week to grow your number of subscribers over time and keep followers engaged. It can be useful to anticipate your posts by establishing a schedule around your next release.

Used well, social media is a great tool for connecting bands and artists to their fans, and thus increasing the chances of success in the music industry.

| Check out: How to gain new Instagram followers?

4. Thinking that you have to be famous to appear in the media

Do you have to be famous or signed to a record label to appear in the media? Well no, except of course if you only want to target the biggest media! Might as well warn you, you will probably not be on MTV if you do not already have a certain notoriety! You will also have to wait a bit to get interviews in iconic magazines.

On the other hand, many blogs are constantly on the lookout for new artists to discover. The regional press also likes to talk about emerging local talents! And when the hour of success has struck for you, they will be happy to say that they were the first to have detected your talent!

Likewise, if Spotify’s editorial playlists are hard to reach, contact independent curators. With only a few euros, launch a Groover campaign and approach magazines, radios, blogs, and playlisters in search of emerging musicians.

Little by little, you will develop a fanbase and you will get noticed by the bigger media outlets. Pave your own way to success by creating these opportunities for yourself.

| Check out: How to use Groover to promote your music with success?

5. Buying fake streams, followers, or likes

Many sites now offer you the opportunity to buy Spotify plays, Instagram followers or likes. Even if this offer seems tempting at first glance, it could prevent you from succeeding in music!

The various platforms track down those who use this technique. You risk being spotted and getting your account suspended! Instead of spending money buying lots of fake followers, take the time to grow your audience. Instead, invest that money in advertising to introduce your music to real new people.

After all, it’s better to have a community of a few hundred engaged fans than thousands of fake followers; with real fans, you will feel more legitimate in your success.

6. Not having a mailing list

Not having a mailing list is a critical oversight for anyone aiming to be successful in the music industry. Contrary to what some might believe, mailing lists are far from obsolete. While having a large following on social media platforms is great, it’s essential to recognize the risks associated with over-reliance on these platforms. What happens if your account gets hacked, or if a platform suddenly becomes irrelevant? Unlike Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, you have full control over your mailing list, making it a crucial asset in your music career.

A mailing list is immune to the whims of social media algorithms and platform policy changes. Given that individuals seldom change their email addresses, a mailing list represents the most reliable method for maintaining long-term contact with your fans. Therefore, prioritizing the creation and expansion of your mailing list is a key to success in building a successful career in music. It ensures direct access to your audience, enabling you to share new music, touring updates, and exclusive content without fear of algorithmic suppression or platform instability.

A mailing list is an invaluable tool for achieving success in your music career by enhancing your ability to directly engage with fans, promote your work, and overcome the challenges of the ever-evolving digital landscape. It empowers you to define success on your terms, build your brand, and foster a community around your music. By taking action to establish a robust mailing list, you’re not just investing in a marketing tool; you’re securing a lifeline to your most dedicated fans that can lead you to success, regardless of changes in social media trends or platforms.

Thus, for aspiring musicians, composers, and music producers looking to make a living from their craft and achieve success in the recording industry, recognizing the value of a mailing list is crucial. It’s not just about having another communication channel; it’s about owning a direct line to your audience that can significantly enhance your ability to succeed. This key to a successful music career should not be overlooked by anyone serious about making music and wanting to be successful in the competitive world of music production and performance.

7. Failing to analyze your results

Devoting extensive time to promoting your own music without a strategic approach is counterproductive. Many musicians find themselves trapped in a cycle of repeating the same marketing strategies, failing to evaluate their effectiveness or to accomplish meaningful engagement. To become successful in today’s music industry, it’s essential to set goals, analyze outcomes, and be willing to adapt and overcome ineffective methods.

Success in your career requires more than persistence; it demands a willingness to learn from failures and embrace new approaches. Identifying the keys to success often involves experimenting with different genres, digital music platforms, and promotion techniques to discover what truly resonates with your audience. Taking action based on these insights can transform your efforts into a powerful tool for achieving success.

Claim your profiles on Spotify for Artists or Deezer Backstage

Take a little time to analyze your statistics on streaming platforms as well as those of your various social media accounts

How old are those who listen to your music?

Where do they live ?

You will get the answer to these questions, and many more, in your statistics. And why not just ask your new fans how they heard about you? Then, adjust your marketing strategies based on the information you have gathered.

“The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest (people) of the past centuries.”

That is a quote from Descartes, one of the most famous philosophers and mathematicians of the 17th century. And there is a lot of truth in that quote, even in 2023.

Making good decisions requires knowledge, and books give us a never-ending amount of knowledge.

So, if you’re looking to expand your knowledge of the music industry, but don’t have a “foot in the door”, books are your best way to go. In this guide, we are going to cover the 7 best music industry books in 2023, and why you need to read them.

Let’s get started 👇

Considered by many as the template for the DIY musician, this music industry book is a must-read in 2023.

Initially published in 2016, the book received a second and then third edition in 2023 to incorporate the latest trends and developments in the music industry.

For emerging artists and songwriters, getting your music on Netflix can be a huge boost in growing your fanbase. Music lovers will often discover new music while watching Netflix and will even listen to the corresponding soundtrack playlists on streaming services. Lots of Netflix shows, like Emily in Paris for example, have curated playlists available on music services like Spotify. Nowadays, if an artist lands a synchronization deal with Netflix, they will likely see engagement skyrocket on music streaming services. Not only will this boost your visibility, but it is also a great way to monetize your music career. Some composers make money uniquely off of sync licenses! Indie music and new artists thus have a lot to gain from landing a Netflix sync.

How do you submit music to Netflix? Most often, artists work with publishing companies or sync agents that will negotiate these placements and licenses. Sometimes record labels also have relationships with a music supervisor at Netflix, making it easier for them to pitch their artists to their catalogue. It helps to have a professional entourage already to land a Netflix sync, but you don’t need to be signed to Sony music or Warner music to do so! For artists who use independent music distribution services like CD Baby or Tunecore, it is possible to sign up for their music publishing administration and be pitched for music licensing opportunities. For a closer look at each route, from music libraries to Netflix’s in-house music team, here is how to submit your music to Netflix.

For the independent artist, we recommend getting in touch with sync agents directly using Groover: an innovative platform that connects artists from all genres directly with the right music industry professionals with guaranteed feedback. You can also promote your music to various media outlets, music blogs and contact potential partners in artist development to get your music heard.

Thanks to Groover and Kendell Entertainment, four artists who use the platform landed their first sync opportunity on an international feature film on Netflix: Les Liaisons Dangereuses 🔥 Meet Emma Doo, Usken, Mehari, and Ucci Why and get to know how landing a sync placement has impacted the visibility of their music so far!

Can you tell us about yourself and your musical project?

Yes of course! My name is Emma- Emma Doo was my grandmother’s nickname for me. I grew up in a musical family where every family gathering was an opportunity to sing together. I first studied theater and dance in high school and then music came later. After some first experiences in Parisian bands as a singer and lyricist, I decided to leave France to train in the United States at Berklee College of Music. During my time there, my project and goal became clearer upon my return to France. Having listened to English and American music from the 70’s to the 90’s, my songs have strong “oldies” influences.

| Follow her on Instagram

How did you meet Clementine, from Kendell Entertainment, and what was the process leading up to your signing?

I met Clementine in April 2020, during the release of my EP, Paradox, thanks to Groover. I sent my song “Be You”, and she accepted it! At first I was dubious, not knowing anything about it… and then I said to myself that at the end of the day, I had nothing to lose! After reading the contract in detail, I signed!

👉 Get in contact with the founder of Kendell Entertainment

Was this your first sync opportunity?

Yes, this is my first sync.

What has this film done for you and your career?

This sync gives me a new impetus and I can’t thank Clementine enough for her work and her belief in my project. This is a rare opportunity for an artist and substantial exposure than I couldn’t have gotten on my own. It’s just the beginning of the adventure so I don’t have the necessary hindsight yet but for now, the streams are going up!

Do you think Groover can shake up the music industry and allow independent artists to get opportunities and meet people that were almost impossible until now?

Absolutely.

</p>

USKEN

USKEN

Can you tell us about yourself and your musical project ?

Our project was born on the ashes of a garage pop band in which Isabelle and I played. I (Yann) had invested a lot in this band and to change things up a bit I had asked Isabelle to go on a trip to Scandinavia. In Norway, we discovered a tiny island which is at the origin of the name of our group: Usken. During the trip, Norwegian musicians taught me the basics of Ableton Live which allowed us to play our music as a duo. We didn’t really have an idea about the musical identity we wanted but we both have very strong tastes: Isabelle likes electronic music with big bass- the kind that you feel in your chest!

On my side, I have a particular taste for the sounds of the 60s. I love old things when it comes to instruments. In short, we wanted to mix electronic sounds with vintage sounds. The absence of a drummer inspired us to use some rhythms and drums that were out of the ordinary. We released our first album in November 2019 with plans for a series of concerts starting in March 2020, but COVID changed everything. Today, we perform as a five piece band on stage and are happy to have met musicians close to our musical universe. Our first album, Drive, has decent streams on streaming services and, without really understanding why, our listeners are mostly in the US.

| Follow them on Instagram

How did you meet Clementine, from Kendell Entertainment, and what was the process leading up to your signing?

I contacted Kendell Entertainement via Groover. I sent them a track I like a lot: The Nest. It’s a track that is not necessarily accessible to everyone; it’s very down tempo, simple and melancholic. I thought it was a good summary of our musical universe but it was quite daring to send a track that was not particularly radio-friendly. I’m happy that Clementine saw a musical universe in it. That’s the most important thing for us. To create music is a rather simple process in the end… to create a musical universe is a challenge!
Concerning the signing of the contract, everything went very quickly. There was not the usual procrastination that I often had to face with other professionals in the music industry. I thank Clementine for her work and her professionalism! It’s organized, it’s fast, it’s clear! I love it!

👉 Get in contact with the founder of Kendell Entertainment

Is this your first sync opportunity?

Yes, this is our very first synchro. We hope that it will be the first of many! I don’t know if it’s related to the visual of “Drive” but the vast majority of the feedback we’ve had about this first album is about the cinematic aspect of our music. That’s a huge compliment for me because when I compose, images come into my head. Yes yes, I have kind of mental video going on while composing! And if no images come to me when I listen to our recordings, the song goes out the window.

What has this film done for you and your career?

Everyone knows about Netflix. To have a label, to play in recognized venues, to have a publisher, this means a lot. Just the name Netflix gives a more professional image to our project.
Take Shelter, the title chosen by Rachel Suissa for this Netflix production, has had very steady streams since its release, but the movie gave it a real boost. I would say that we have almost doubled our audience in the last few days, but above all, some of the listeners are taking the time to listen to more of our music tracks. Some are now subscribers!

Do you think Groover can shake up the music industry and allow independent artists to get opportunities and meet people that were almost impossible until now?

Ah ah, the question is a bit biased, isn’t it? Well, to be honest, I tend to be quite cautious about the music industry in general- that’s my punk side probably! But yes, Groover can probably change that- at least I hope so anyway! There is a real possibility because I am often amazed by the quality of the musical projects that I can discover on stage. They are often far from the beaten path of artists that we hear via mainstream media. Groover makes it very easy for bands who have no network to get in touch with professionals. That’s worth its weight in gold!

As long as these industry professionals are willing to take risks, there is an opportunity! I think that Clementine took a risk with us and that’s worth respecting. Hats off to you, Clementine! But yes, it’s true that Groover allowed us to sign with a label (Archi Records) and it’s through Groover that I met Clementine. So yes, Groover works. Will Groover allow us to find a tour manager? That’s our next goal! And, I’ll keep you posted!

</p>

MEHARI

Mehari

Can you tell us about yourself and your musical project?

Mehari, musical duo from Toulouse, is the project between Pierre-Henri (guitar, bass, production) and me (keyboards, vocals).
The adventure of the group began with a remix of “Lover’s Cave” for Is Tropical signed on Kitsuné, which allowed us to be noticed internationally at the time.
Then we released 2 EPs “Red Moon” and “All this time”.
Les Inrocks classified us as light and airy pop music, which suits us well.

After a break, we are back in the game with the release of “Fame”, co-produced by Eric Chédeville, pioneer of the French touch genre and co-composer of the track “I feel it coming” by The Weeknd.
The track is part of a new EP that will be released soon and it is precisely a remix of this track that has been signed for the sync in Liaisons Dangereuses.

How did you meet Clementine, from Kendell Entertainment, and what was the process leading up to your signing?

We met Clementine through Groover : )

Everything went pretty smoothly. Clementine is a very conscientious professional who doesn’t forget any details.
She makes sure that everything is in place, which is very reassuring for both the artists and the companies she works with.

👉 Get in contact with the founder of Kendell Entertainment

Is this your first sync opportunity?

No, we had already had some sync placements for our music, notably for the brand Citroën or on TV.
But this is probably the first one on an international feature film.

What has this film done for you and your career?

The movie gave us some exposure and credibility in the cinema sync world.
Our track was featured and lasts for about 3min30, which is quite rare.

In one week we could already see a strong boost in engagement on Shazam: (+500 Shazams in one week) and streams (+400%)

Do you think Groover can shake up the music industry and allow independent artists to get opportunities and meet people that were almost impossible until now?

Yes I think Groover can definitely play a major role in helping independent artists get access to bigger opportunities, especially with sync placements.

Can you tell us about yourself and your musical project?

I try to put my soul into my music, I’ve been doing it since I was a little girl and I’m super happy to be pursuing a career in a field that I enjoy so much- even though sometimes it’s a bit of an obstacle course. Rap for me is a way to express my ideas in rhythm and music, whether it’s just for fun or to talk about more serious matters. My project is to succeed in creating original works that I like thoroughly- it’s not an easy task, but as time goes by, I’m more and more satisfied, and of course it’s about creating tracks that mark people positively: songs that allow them to have a good time and to let off steam.

Yes, “Freaky” on “Liaisons Dangereuses” was my first synchro.

What has this film done for you and your career?

This movie brought me a lot of visibility on this particular song “Freaky”. I’m very happy.

Do you think Groover can shake up the music industry and allow independent artists to get opportunities and meet people that were almost impossible until now?

I’m sure it will. I find Groover to be a very good media; I have already come into contact with different professionals, I have been able to get several feedbacks and it has allowed me to expand my network.

Djakarta, a band of brothers, take on the musical world with their indie pop-folk sound. With almost six years of experience, they have found Groover to be a great tool in their toolbox that has enabled them to reach the next level in their career.

Groover has helped us get in touch with different labels and PR for feedback about our projects! We had a lot of press opportunities [around the world] where the press and music fans seem to really like our music!

– Djakarta

However, these opportunities did not come from thin air. These brothers have been working hard for years and have been able to achieve a unique image and sound that will take them far; we had the pleasure to interview them. Read all about their journey and check out some of their incredible tracks.

1. Djakarta, for those who don’t know you or your music, how would you introduce yourselves and your style of music?

Hi! We are Raphael and Tristan Stuart, we are French-born Australians brothers. As singer-songwriters and multi-instrumentalists we craft intimate pop songs, seamlessly blending acoustic and electronic textures inside our studio in Paris.

Raphael and Tristan from Djakarta

YADAM is a multicultural and trilingual artist who breaks down all kinds of barriers that he is faced with. He is an honest and sincere artist whose innate transparency is very present and highly valued in his music. Mixing aspects of pop and soul music, he presents his latest project “SAFEPLACE”. We had the pleasure of speaking with him and learning more about how Groover has helped him achieve international press opportunities, as well as reach new audiences around the world.

YADAM, for those who don’t know you, how would you present yourself as an artist and describe your style of music?

For those who do not know me, my name is YADAM, I am a multicultural and trilingual artist, born in Venezuela but currently based in Paris. My style of music could be described as a mixture of pop and sentimental alternative soul. I explore the notions of melancholy and hope quite a bit. I love that everything is linked to a concept and making sense of each song in order to create a great story.

YADAM, can you tell us a little about the trajectory of your career from the beginning until now?

I started writing and composing music in 2018, after having participated in a popular singing competition in France called “Nouvelle Star”. I came to France looking for a new opportunity, but I never thought it would be in music. My first EP “SAFEPLACE” came out at the end of February 2020 just when the pandemic started. Fortunately, the pandemic was well received because I was able to rest after the album’s release and after more than 10 concerts in the previous months (opening for shows by artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Sofi Tukker, HRVY) and already had a following due to my being on TV two years prior. In October 2020, I released my single “CARRERA” with French producer Brokenstra and it was used for the APPLE Keynote in April 2021. A month later at the end of May 2021 I decided to release a new version of my first EP “SAFEPLACE (SAFER EDITION)” with the song “Nada Es Seguro” and thanks to that I managed to feature on the cover of the LATIN PRIDE playlist on Spotify.

Talk to us about your most recent project

“SAFEPLACE” (and its “SAFER EDITION”) consists of 8 songs (some in Spanish, English, or French) that summarize, in some way, what I have lived and experienced in these 20 years of my life; a life full of so many unexpected changes. The “SAFER” version allowed me to deepen my heart and explore issues like my sexuality or fear of never seeing my family again or failing in music. I think it’s a very personal album but, written in a way that many other people can identify with, whether they are immigrants, queer, or people who have also suffered brutal separations and / or changes.

What are your plans for the future?

Two words: Shows and ALBUM. I’m looking forward to live music coming back and finally being able to sing my songs live. Meanwhile, I have already written the songs for my new album, I just need to produce them and work on everything else as well!

What advice would you give your younger self? What advice would you give to an artist just starting out?

The only advice I would give my younger self is to keep dreaming and working; I would also say that little by little things will happen and that sometimes, even without even knowing it, we are working towards something that we will love later on. Everything always comes at the right time and when we least expect it.

And if I could give one piece of advice to an artist starting their career, it would be not to try to do things too quickly or easily, take your time, and appreciate the process of creating and sharing your music. Which is simultaneously very beautiful and crazy experience, so you have to persevere.

FINN is a Melbourne-based rock-country-blues band, that focuses on emitting emotion through the art of storytelling. We have had the please of speaking with them about their newest album “MAYROSE” and how Groover’s personalized feedback has helped them unlock new media opportunities.

We’ve tried many different promotion and feedback platforms and Groover is by far the best. You can tell that the feedback that you receive is from real people that have taken the time to listen to your music.

– FINN

FINN, could you introduce yourself and the band.

Hello! We’re FINN from Melbourne, Australia. A five piece, original rock-country-blues band that blends influences from the likes of Mark Knopfler, JJ Cale, Nick Cave, George Harrison, Ronnie Lane and more, with our own contemporary storytelling and modern production. We’ve been busy writing and recording over the course of the pandemic, and are excited to be releasing our second album this year.

| Check them out on Instagram and on Facebook

Tell us about your new album MAYROSE.

Earlier this year we released “STONEWALLING“, which was more of a blue tone, minor bluesey sound. It got some really good feedback and reviews, but was pretty dense at times with songs about World War I, the pandemic, and the current political environment. “MAYROSE” is sort of the antidote to that. It’s warmer, and kinda like a spring time album – and with it being released on 3 of September, at least in the southern hemisphere it kinda coincides with the start of the season. Luke and I both had children this year also, and there’s songs about that (“Baby Girl”), as well as a few love songs (“Come and Play”, “Believe in You”), and a little bit of melancholy / loss too just for good measure (“Longest Day”, Twilight”). There’s a touch more country-folk in there too (“Roll On”, “Here It Comes”). I think overall it’s kinda like a post pandemic pick me up in some ways.

FINN, this is your second album this year, how many more songs do you have recorded?

Good question! I’m actually not sure. There’s a tonne that we’re working on. Many unfinished as yet, but it’s just sort of like something we do out of habit…write a song or two every weekend. I kinda view it as like trailwalking in the woods. You find a new path, follow it and see where it leads. Sometimes it’s a dead end, other times it’s a new forest, a canyon, etc. Exploration really, and lot’s of fun!

You’ve promoted your track Come and Play through Groover, can you tell us a bit more about this track and your collaboration with Tess Hannah?

Tess is one of Melbourne’s great new upcoming artists. Her voice is as clean and pure as you can imagine, and a true contrast to the gruff stuff that we do. A beauty and the beast thing in some ways. “Come and Play” is a jazzy-blues kinda groove that just kinda catches you. It’s one of those songs that sounds positive, but has an underlying darkness / edge to it. It’s a bit of a lover’s Q&A kind of thing, with Tess providing the counterpoint at the end. You don’t really know exactly what’s going on, which makes it more intriguing I think. Here’s a little video of us recording it in the studio:

Will we have a chance to see you play live any time soon?

It’s obviously a tricky time for the live music scene as a whole. We’ve had to cancel a few gigs over the last few months due to lockdowns, however, we are scheduled to play ‘The Toff in Town’ on November 25 in Melbourne. Tickets for that gig are available here! We’re also looking at a national tour in 2022, and maybe a tour of Europe after that!
FINN, you’ve used Groover to promote your music, can you describe your experience? Would you recommend Groover to other artists?

Absolutely! We’ve used Groover for two campaigns now – one for “Come and Play” and one for ” Dead or Alive” which was on our “STONEWALLING” album. We’ve tried many different promotion and feedback platforms and it’s by far the best. You can tell that the feedback that you receive is from real people that have taken the time to listen to your music. I was blown away by one comment by a blogger who was commending us for using a ‘C shaped D chord’ in one of our tracks…I mean that’s awesome. They really know their stuff and give really considered feedback. With both campaigns we had a couple of hundred bloggers and influencers respond, with a large proportion of them adding it to playlists, writing blogs about the songs, and sharing it on social media. The exposure via the Groover network is unparalleled in my humble opinion!

We were eager to learn more about talented electro artist Tommy Lunaire, his way of thinking, his projects… Groover helped him get into Electro Posé playlists and we are very proud to have been able to help him gain more visibility for his project ✨

It’s thanks to Groover that my music has been heard all over the world.

– Tommy Lunaire –

Tommy Lunaire and Electro Posé, can you present your respective projects in a few words ?

Tommy Lunaire, it is the creative and inquisitive mind that lets emotions flow freely to translate them into sounds and music. Without imposing any barriers or constraints on myself, I explore the universe of possibilities of electronic synthesizers and electro-acoustics.

Electro Posé is a YouTube channel created in 2013 which aims to highlight their favorite of electronic music artists (ranging from indie to house) in the French scene. The channel has more than 1.2 million subscribers and its playlists (Spotify / Deezer / Apple Music) are followed by more than 500,000 people.

Tommy Lunaire, how was your musical project born ?

In fact, from the moment I played my first notes on a synthesizer!

It’s such a personal project that I feel like it’s always been a part of me as a musician, and it constantly evolves along with me. Since my meeting with Jean-David and the creation of the Supersavant label, the project has materialized and I now feel ready to share my music with the whole world.

Electro Posé, what attracted you to Tommy Lunaire’s song Until I Melt, discovered on Groover ?

The song is already perfectly produced and we feel that all the instruments are mastered, there is no unnecessary surplus. The vocal chops are great and what appealed to me the most is obviously the progression of the song. We are entitled to a long intro of over a minute (which is less and less visible) which literally plunges us into the song with a dark enough atmosphere to end up with a very soft and catchy 2nd part. It was this 2nd part that really gave me that little crush I needed to be playlisted.

Do you have some specific criteria for highlighting songs or do you operate solely on instinct and love at first sight ?

Honestly no, we don’t have any particular criteria, obviously there has to be a structure that makes sense and elements of a catchy melody that stays in mind, but the main thing is really to take us into a universe, to try to go a little outside the norm and to propose new ideas. We will especially assess the “sharpness” of the instruments and the mix, the melody and that universe comes after.

Tommy Lunaire can you talk about your musical project ?

I produce music for several Quebec artists, including William Papillon who is also signed on the Supersavant label.

This next year will therefore, be the culmination of several projects on which I have worked on in parallel with my Electro project. I am also a live musician for rapper Vendou, and since the shows are slowly resuming, I have the chance to tour across Quebec. There will also be new digital art collaborations that I will post on my instagram page.

Tommy Lunaire and Electro Posé, what would be your advice to young developing artists ?

Tommy Lunaire : You don’t need to have a lot of equipment to make great music, you can get started right away with a laptop and headphones. Have fun! Listen to lots of music, be inspired, be open-minded. Surround yourself with people who have the same passion as you and grow together, help each other.

Electro Posé : Treat yourself, get off the beaten track, find your universe and everything will be fine!

| Check out: Building a universe around your musical project

And finally, what do you think about Groover ?

Tommy Lunaire : The platform really made a huge difference during the release of my single. It’s thanks to Groover that my music has been heard all over the world. It just makes it easier to connect with music enthusiasts and people from the industry. With Groover there are no more borders, we suddenly find ourselves in the same room where we can all share our music and services.

Electro Posé : Groover is a great platform to discover new artists and give strength to deserving young artists. Groover is an indispensable tool for artists who cannot get feedback from professionals and who want to progress or receive visibility.

We recently met Viratempo, from Brazil, who have been conquering a growing audience within the alternative scene. Mixing elements of dream pop with various influences, the quartet is bathed in a pop instrumental and a sweet voice. In their most recent work they released an EP of re-readings of their own songs, the AUTOCURA EP.

We had the pleasure to ask them a few questions about their project and about the international impact Groover had in promoting their latest work.

Groover brings hope to a generation of artists that are emerging worldwide. With all the new technologies, Groover came to help both artists and music professionals.

– Viratempo –

Viratempo, could you tell us about yourselves?

We have been friends for a long time, some members studied together and others got to know each other through the shows we used to do with our first high school bands. We are a Brazilian band from São Paulo. Our project started when our vocalist Gabriel Valladão presented some compositions at the end of 2014. We have gone through some changes in the last few years. Since our first album, the band has crossed several musical aesthetics, predominantly dream pop, but there are trip-hop, lo-fi, MPB, R&B, soul and disco influences.

Your visual identity is a hallmark of the band, can you tell us a bit more about it?

For us, visual identity is as important as the music, we believe the two go hand in hand. The visual language is such a strong way of expression, that we like to work and pass our ideas and concepts through it as well. All this work is elaborated by the band, but it also counts on the work of many of our friends who are immersed in the artistic universe. For example, all our clips were produced by friends who, besides advertising work, seek to work with independent artists. This makes our visual identity also a collective work, which always allows for a good dose of freedom and determination.

Viratempo = Visual Experience from their album Cura on Youtube

What are the inspirations for making music in a period without shows?

We have always been very self-sufficient in the creative process of making music. We have always created songs individually and then put them together in rehearsals and in the studio, so the process has stayed pretty much the same. We are taking advantage of this no-show period to write and produce new songs and concepts for future work. In the last two years a lot of things happened that gave us more structure and freedom to think about ambitious projects. We met incredible artists and musicians, producers, and now we are part of the Freak label (who is also an influencer on Groover).

The album “Cura” has just passed the mark of one million streams on digital platforms. How does this achievement make you feel and what does this change for your career?

We can already say that we didn’t become millionaires hahaha. We are always very happy to know that each play is a new listener or someone who is listening to our music on a loop. The album Cura is like our first child, it took two years of work, it was produced and released independently, so just getting it out into the world was a personal victory! In terms of career, it brings more visibility. We know that the number of plays and views is a kind of showcase, especially for concert producers, festival curators, and market professionals in general. Like it or not, it reflects in some way the digital reach of your music. This certainly brings us many new opportunities!

You made a campaign with Groover promoting your sound outside of Brazil, but you sing in Portuguese. What was the goal with this?

In October of last year, we released the EP AUTOCURA where we sought to produce versions of songs from the CURA album by inviting emerging national and international artists. When we discovered the platform we saw that there were many influencers based in Europe: radio stations, playlisters, digital media…

As we have a song called “MEMORIES” feat. AKAN, 4dadasuicide e Kandieiro that counts with the participation of rappers from France, England and Mozambique, we knew it would be a good strategy and help us stick out in a busy market. We decided to send our song to Groover and it got into several playlists and radio programming from several European countries.

What are the plans for this year?

The year 2021 for Viratempo will be a year totally focused on creation. We are immersed in a creative process, writing new songs and aiming for new releases. But we are doing everything very calmly. People can expect new work this year!

What would be your advice to young artists in development?

Patience and persistence. Being an independent artist is not easy anywhere in the world, especially in Brazil. When we started the band, we wanted everything to happen in an intense way, but we discovered that the greatest intensity is to feel that the evolution comes little by little and with hard work every day. Don’t stop working on your songs, your contacts, social media, and go for it! We are all in the same boat and we’re all learning.

And finally, what do you think Groover can bring to the music industry?

Groover brings hope to a generation of artists that is emerging all over the world. With all the new technologies, Groover is here to help both artists and music professionals. The platform helps to weave real links between artists and influencers in their musical niche. This will boost the careers of many people, we are sure!

Mixing modern and rhythmic sounds, Gabriella Lima uses MPB (Brazilian Popular Music) roots in her music. The Brazilian artist, who has been living in Paris since 2014, used Groover and got great results. Our team had the pleasure of speaking with her about her musical project and her career.

Gabriella Lima, can you present your musical project to us?

Hello Groover people, I am Gabriella Lima, I was born and raised in São Paulo, but have been living in Paris for the last 7 years. I am an independent artist and in March of this year I released my first album called “Bálsamo”. The album closes the cycle which started with my single “De nós dois” and other singles released during the pandemic. There are 4 unreleased tracks that make a poetic invitation to enter my intimate universe: the search for absolute love, reconstruction, and liberation of oneself.

How was your career born?

My career began unpretentiously in 2012. When I realized that I would feel more complete and happier singing in a bar than working in an office behind a computer as I had done until that point. That year, I left all the certainty and solidity that a high-responsibility position in a multinational company brings and followed my heart by choosing a more volatile path, but much more pleasurable and which corresponded more accurately to my truth: music.

Since then I have sung in bars, restaurants, hotels, created a repertoire and learned to play an instrument that allowed me to explore my creative side and allowed me to compose my own songs. I moved to France’s capital in 2014, and there I sang as a resident artist in a traditional cabaret in the historic Quartier Latin neighborhood. This experience opened borders for me and I enhanced my craft. After 5 years in this cabaret, already with a certain number of songs written in the early mornings between one performance break and another, I decided to pursue an authorial career. I started to plan, produce and release my first original works, which eventually led to the creation and release of “Bálsamo”.

What are your inspirations and what do you love most about being an artist?

My inspirations are literature specifically, poetry. I always loved Clarice Lispector and reading her books opened my mind a lot. In terms of musical artists, I am very influenced by Brazilian music: Jorge Ben Jor, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Rita Lee, Gilberto Gil, Marina Lima and Elis Regina; they have always been my biggest influences. What I love most about being an artist is that art is one of the few universes where being authentic is a true triumph. And each path is unique, there is no recipe, no fixed protocols, and even less, a false character that will last for a long time. The more you can be you, the more accurate and true your art is. Music brings me this freedom.

How would you describe a day with Gabriella Lima?

It’s boring for those who are not into routines hahaha I love it! I am crazy about the “To do list” and love to check things off when I finish a task. I like to create a healthy, productive routine and stick to it. Precisely because I am an independent artist with a small audience, I work without pressure and demands from labels, teams or fans. Not having discipline in this scenario is very dangerous and inviting to procrastinate and get lost when you are your own boss. So for me, a routine works. It is a way to make things happen!

After this long introduction, let’s go to my day: I have an introspective morning with meditation, I write a few pages on whatever comes to my mind without any pretension, drink warm water with lemon and read. This is religious, I do it every morning. Then I follow my feelings: I like to study and practice my singing very often, I keep an eye on Instagram, on artists and their releases, and on new ways of communicating with the public to get a little inspiration and to stay up to date with what’s going on. I love series and movies so I always end my day watching something before going to bed. I listen to music and podcasts all day long. I am always connected and I don’t like that, but I accept it and try to live in peace with it.

Gabriella Lima, what are your plans for next year?

To continue composing, release new songs and make partnerships, something I haven’t had the opportunity to do yet and I am dying to create new ones. This record of mine was a very lonely production and I realized how important it is to collaborate with others on the same project. If everything goes right, I will start a concert tour as soon as possible because my happiest moments are on stage.

What advice would you give to young developing artists?

Treat your music, from the beginning, with a lot of respect, dedication, and responsibility. Try to disengage a little from the artistic side once the music is ready, wear the shirt of the boss of your product and work hard and with a lot of love for it. Discipline and lightness always. Allying yourself with the right people is always more interesting than working alone, but also knowing how to work alone is important; because in the beginning of our careers, we don’t always have the chance to have people who believe in us. If you have support, great! If not, know how to move forward alone without getting discouraged and without playing the victim. Every time I saw myself as a victim I got into a not so good vibe. Every time I took ownership of my own life, things happened for me.

And finally, what did you think of Groover? What did you get out of the platform with your campaign?

Groover was a big surprise for me. I found out about it through a podcast here in France (“Just in tuned”) and I found the interview with the creator of the platform very interesting. The interest came from my need as an independent artist, without press or an agent in France, to find a way to present my first record. I didn’t know anyone here in the field. I thought “I’ll try it,the worst case scenario is they won’t accept my work and I’ll get feedback from those contacts. Also, feedback is always good.” But, I was surprised by the number of people interested and accepting of my music. Mind you, I think the success of my campaign came from the time I spent in filtering the right contacts. The platform had already done a super filter according to the type of music and needs that I previously presented.

Still, since I had a limited budget, I could not afford to send it to all the options. I spent a lot of time going through each contact’s profile to see if my music was in line with their philosophy in order to not “waste” a submission in vain. Based on this very careful selection, I believe I made the right choices and had great results.

I had so many responses! I wish I would have received more feedback from the french market, but I had more positive results in Brazil which, I believe, is because of the language and the type of music, or maybe I did not make a good selection of contacts from France. The platform brings the artist closer to professionals that they normally wouldn’t have easy access to. I love it and recommend it!
