The question comes up constantly among artists: “Ok, I know I need to be on TikTok… but what do I actually post?” That’s often where everything stalls. Not for lack of ideas, but because people still think of the platform as a promotional showcase, when it actually works much better as a space for storytelling, experimentation, and closeness with an audience.

The real challenge isn’t posting more for the sake of it. The real challenge is building content that makes people want to discover you and then stick around. To do that, you need to move beyond pure promotion and learn how to turn your artistic project into living, breathing material.

This article is based on a French Groover+ workshop, Best Practices on TikTok in 2026 for Artists, hosted by Lisa Mallier.

🎬 First reflex: stop only posting for your releases

Many artists only use TikTok around a single, a music video, or an EP drop. That’s better than nothing, but it’s not what delivers the best results. Why? Because the algorithm — and users — need to place you in time. If you only appear to announce something, you quickly start to look like a billboard.

On the flip side, if you regularly share content that reflects your universe, your references, your methods, your struggles, your behind-the-scenes, your instincts, and your humor, then promotion becomes natural. It slots into a larger narrative. And it’s that narrative that makes people want to listen to your music.

This logic applies even for artists who are short on time. You don’t need to produce complex videos, what matters most is thinking in simple, repeatable series that build a habit with your audience.

🧠 The 7 most relevant content types for an artist

1. Behind-the-scenes of creation

This is probably one of the most powerful formats for a music project. You can talk about how a song was born, where a lyric came from, why you changed a topline, how you found a sound, a texture, a title, an image, or a performance intention.

This type of content works because it transforms a finished piece of work into an open story. It gives access to your process. And that process is just as interesting to fans as it is to the casually curious.

You can pair this with this Groover article on blowing up on TikTok and this guide on music promotion via TikTok.

2. Project storytelling

You can also talk about your project in a broader sense. Who are you? What’s your approach? What are you trying to express through your tracks? What connects your music, your visuals, your writing, your obsessions?

This format is especially valuable when you’re launching a new artistic direction or a new chapter. It lets you draw a line between your identity and your songs. And it often converts better than purely promotional content, because it creates attachment before the listening even begins.

3. Narrative carousels

The TikTok carousel is still underused by many artists, yet it can be remarkably effective. It lets you repurpose visuals, studio photos, concert images, screenshots of notes, polaroids, lyrics, posters, or tour moments.

The key isn’t just showing beautiful images. The key is adding a narrative. One idea per slide. One stage per slide. One anecdote per slide. A mini photo vlog. A mini creation journal. A before-and-after. A release story.

💡 A carousel that tells a story is almost always more valuable than one that simply looks “beautiful.” On TikTok, narrative beats visual perfection.

4. Simple face-to-camera formats

Many artists think they need to be ultra-smooth, ultra-funny, or ultra-comfortable on camera to make it work. That’s not true. What really matters is being clear, sincere, and present. A simple format can perform very well if the message is right.

“Let me tell you why this track matters so much to me”

“The moment I knew this chorus had to stay”

“What I couldn’t say any other way than through this song”

“The hidden reference behind this music video”

These are quick to produce, require little editing, and can generate far more followers than some heavily crafted posts.

5. Covers, but with an angle

Covers are still useful, especially when they’re consistent with your universe. But today, a standalone cover without a narrative angle or connection to your project carries less strategic weight than it used to. The real question to ask yourself is: what does this cover say about me?

For example, you might explain why you chose that song, what it changed for you, how it connects to your own music, or what it taught you as a performer.

6. Content tied to your other passions

This is one of the standout points from the webinar. Today, many users follow an artist not just for their music, but for their overall personality. If literature, film, fashion, sports, journaling, vintage synths, or writing are part of who you are, they can also feed your strategy.

This isn’t scattering your focus. It’s enriching the perception of your universe. As long as the connection remains coherent, this kind of content reinforces what makes you singular.

7. Replies to comments

This format is far too often overlooked. Yet replying to a comment with a video is both simple, smart, and high-performing. You turn an interaction into new content, you show that you’re listening to your community, and you keep the conversation going.

Someone asks when the track is dropping? Reply in a video. Someone wants to know how you wrote a certain passage? Reply in a video. Someone reacts strongly to a lyric? Reply in a video. It’s content already validated by the genuine interest of a real person.

✍️ How to make each piece of content stronger without spending 3 hours on it

The biggest blocker for artists is usually time. The solution isn’t necessarily to do more — it’s to simplify the method. A TikTok piece of content doesn’t need to be heavy to produce in order to be relevant.

Start with a strong hook

Add on-screen text to provide context

Write a caption that extends the interest

Choose a handful of useful hashtags, not an auto-generated list

Repurpose your existing content by adapting it to TikTok’s language

A simple example: you have an Instagram studio carousel. On Instagram, it lives through its aesthetic. On TikTok, you can take the same images and add text like “The day this song finally found its chorus” or “3 moments I almost gave up on this track.” You’ve just turned a showcase piece into a narrative one.

To strengthen consistency between TikTok and other platforms, you can also read this Groover article on Instagram features.

📅 A simple method for staying consistent over time

The hardest part isn’t coming up with one idea. The hardest part is keeping it up. For that, you need a realistic method. The webinar emphasizes some very useful habits: batching, drafts, scheduling, consistency over perfection.

Concretely, you can film several pieces of content in a single session:

2 face-to-camera videos

1 narrative carousel

1 studio or rehearsal clip

1 reply to a comment

Then save everything as drafts, schedule if needed, and maintain a sustainable rhythm. One well-thought-out post per week, kept up consistently over time, is worth more than a burst of content followed by two months of silence.

🚀 What to remember before you start

You don’t need to become a content machine. You don’t need to chase every trend either. What you do need is to understand one essential thing: TikTok works really well when an artist stops trying to only promote — and starts telling stories too.

Telling the story of a track, an obsession, a day, a doubt, a scene, an intention. In short: telling the story of what your project is trying to make people feel. From there, content ideas become far more plentiful. And above all, they become far more coherent.

If you’re still stuck, ask yourself this one simple question before every post: “Does this content help someone better understand my music, my approach, or my personality?” If the answer is yes, you’re probably on the right track.

Want access to workshop replays and artist development resources throughout the year? Join Groover+ or read this article to find out more!

Before someone presses play on your music, there’s probably something they’ve already seen: your cover art in a playlist, a clip on TikTok, a looping visual on Spotify, a thumbnail on YouTube, or a photo on Instagram.

Until fans connect with your sound emotionally, they’ll often connect with it visually first. For independent artists, that can feel like a lot of pressure. But strong visual branding doesn’t require an enormous budget or a full creative agency behind you.

In this article, we’ll explore why the visual side of your music career matters just as much as the sonic one, and how the right tools can make building it feel far less overwhelming than you think.

Why visual branding actually matters

The visual world you’ve built (or haven’t yet) around your music speaks before your sound does. The moment someone sees your cover art in a playlist, a clip in their feed, or a photo on your profile, they’re already forming an impression.

Visual branding is the aesthetic identity surrounding your music, bringing together colours, fonts, imagery, typography, editing styles, photography, motion graphics, and design choices that shape how audiences internalize your presence as an artist.

Getting your music heard is step one. Ensuring that the full visual experience matches the quality of your sound is what keeps them around. Platforms like Rotor Videos make it possible for independent artists to build:

Music & lyric videos

Spotify Canvas

Apple Music Album Motion

Visualizers and streaming assets, social clips & more

Album covers: Your first impression

Album artwork is often a listener’s first visual touchpoint, which means it has some serious work to do. An effective piece of artwork should hint at the world you’re building, while giving potential listeners a reason to press play.

Independent artists sometimes rush through cover design as one final release task on their checklist, but strong cover art plays a large role in discovery. It becomes:

The image attached to playlists and shares

The thumbnail fans recognize

The centrepiece of your promotional rollout

The foundation for your visual campaign

Releasing new music is vital, but these days, it takes more than a great song to grab the spotlight. Your cover art is part of your promotional arsenal, so treat it with the same intention you’d give the music itself.

Apple Music Album Motion & Spotify Canvas

Streaming platforms now offer artists opportunities to create motion-based visuals that deepen engagement during the listening experience.

Spotify Canvas allows artists to upload short looping visuals that play while a song streams. These animations can make tracks feel more immersive while helping listeners form stronger visual associations with your music.

Apple Music Album Motion takes a subtler approach, animating album artwork with cinematic movement that enhances the atmosphere of a release.

Both tools are most effective when they feel connected to the larger visual identity of a project. Your photography, artwork, typography, colours, and motion design should all feel like part of the same world. Give people something to recognize, and they’ll start to remember you.

Short-Form content keeps your world alive

Visual branding isn’t limited to official releases. In many ways, your day-to-day content matters just as much. Short-form content has become one of the primary ways artists maintain visibility between new drops. Studio clips, behind-the-scenes footage, teasers, live snippets, and personality-driven posts all help audiences stay connected to your world.

The key is to share more than announcements and still images, and to understand what each platform actually rewards:

TikTok: Favours short, punchy video; often prioritizes immediacy and personality

Instagram: Responds to polished visuals and aesthetics

YouTube Shorts: Thrives on replayability and retention

Music videos: Creativity over budget

Music videos remain one of the strongest tools artists have for expressing personality and expanding the emotional world of a song. But, the rulebook has been rewritten. Some of the more effective music videos today are:

Concept-driven

Performance-based

Lo-fi & intimate

Experimental

Humourous

Visually atmospheric

Social-first & fast-paced

The good news? You don’t need a major label budget to do it. You just need a vision, and the right tools to bring it to life.

Lyric videos: Underrated & underused

Lyric videos get dismissed as the low-effort option. They shouldn’t be. A strong lyric video helps your fans connect more deeply with the writing itself while extending the lifespan of a release. It transforms a simple upload into a more engaging visual experience.

Lyric videos can also be incredibly versatile:

Animated typography

Minimalist text treatments

Cinematic visuals

Social-friendly edits

Fast-paced motion graphics

Performance-based visuals

Most importantly, lyric videos create another opportunity for fans to engage with your music visually, and repetition is a huge part of building recognition.

Building your visual universe

The through line across all of this is intentionality. Artist branding should evolve over time, but within each release cycle or era, audiences should feel a clear sense of identity tying everything together. Your album art, your social clips, your Canvas, your music videos: they should all feel like they belong to the same world.

That cohesion is what turns casual listeners into invested fans, and invested fans into the kind of community that follows you from one era to the next, long after the scroll ends.

When we think of Björk, apart from her experimental music, somewhere between electronic, soul, and pop, which defies categorization and genre, we think above all of her visual identity, inspired by the natural elements, particularly plants and the aquatic world.

In this way, she has developed a whole visual style around her music that destabilizes, intrigues, and leaves a mark on the listener. And yet, the paradox of her visual identity is that although she is sometimes unrecognizable (completely covered by her costumes so you can’t even see her face), her style is so unique and identifiable that it’s impossible not to recognize her touch.

1. Visual identity as a defining element of the artist

Björk asserts the link between her visuals and her music. Far from being illustrations, they are genuine translations. She goes deeper into this concept in her podcast “Sonic Symbolism,” where she details the influences on her various albums.

“When people ask me about the differences between the music on my albums, I find it easier to use visual shortcuts. In a way, that’s why my album covers are like homemade tarot cards. The image on the front may seem like a simple visual moment, but to me, it describes the sound of the album. I try to express that with my color palette, the textures of the textiles, with what I’m holding, and the angle of the posture I’m in translates a relationship to the world. Also, the emotion of the mouth tries to share the general mood of the album. Maybe you could call it a kind of Acoustic Symbolism.” – Björk, in the first episode of her Podcast “Sonic Symbolism.”

It’s interesting to see in her testimony how the artist conceptualizes her album covers, how precise she is in conveying the “mood,” the “vibe” of her music, right down to the fabric textures and body posture.

At the time Björk broke through, social networks were not yet as developed as they are today. It was the age of MTV. However, we can be pretty sure that if she’d started today, she still would have been popular thanks to her identity that speaks to the concerns of the time, closeness to nature, questioning the boundaries between humans, animals, and minerals.

Today, Björk isn’t on TikTok. She only has Instagram, which she mostly fills with photos of her incredible outfits, concert videos, and announcements of her musical projects. However, if she had to do it all over again, social networks would have offered Björk incredible possibilities to express all her creativity and identity!

Indeed, even if finding a visual identity is a challenge that can be perceived as stressful for musicians, it’s also an opportunity to enrich the message of their music, to give it a new dimension, to create a world of its own.

Sometimes, a little guidance is needed to realize the full potential of the project. Professional advice can be invaluable, whether it’s for the artistic or the marketing side of things. With this in mind, Groover has set itself the mission of democratizing access to professional advice for artists in development, whatever their budget. As a result, artists can enrich their musical universe with a rich visual universe that will resonate with their listeners, fostering the development of a solid fan base that identifies with the artist and their artistic world.

—

Want to gain visibility and/or find a team to develop your project?
Send your music directly to music industry pros via Groover 👇

—

2. An artist who made a name for herself with a music video

From this point of view, it’s interesting to note that Björk’s first success wasn’t so much her music per se, but the whole world around her. Indeed, Human Behaviour received relatively little radio play. The music video, on the other hand, was played on MTV in 1993, and it was this that made the singer explode. The video, directed by Michel Gondry, mixes references and styles, reinforcing Björk’s trademark destabilizing quality. The video’s aesthetic is reminiscent of children’s TV series from the 60s and 70s, where the characters were puppets. The usual teddy bear is transformed into a monster in a tale that mixes references to Goldilocks and Red Riding Hood. The shots are incisive, fast-paced, and designed to shock: from the very start of the clip, the shot is taken from the height of a freeway, where a hedgehog is seen crossing as a car speeds past the camera. The scene takes place at night, and Björk combines innovation and the bizarre: one of the following shots is a close-up of some kind of wiggling larvae, on which Björk’s head is photoshopped.

In this video, Björk lays the foundations of her image: playing on the bizarre and destabilizing her audience, exploiting a very plant-like environment, questioning the porous boundaries between the animal, plant, and human worlds, questioning the relationship to reality in mirroring the potentials of the imagination.

3. Destabilize your audience

Björk likes to destabilize, to play on our relationship with reality. Her clips are highly edifying, forcing her audience to question themselves. She likes to erase the boundaries and partitions that might exist, whether between natural elements, or between dream and reality.

In her video Triumph of a Heart, for example, she is married to a cat that behaves like a human being. The boundary between animal and human is blurred. Similarly, in Bachelorette, the spectators in her story are transformed one by one into shrubs.

Her music videos are more than just illustrations of her music or marketing tools to promote her world. They are, at times, veritable short films, in which the viewer is caught up in the visual narrative carried by the music. Bachelorette is a perfect example. The clip recounts how Björk found a book that wrote itself, then her success and downfall as the book’s author. She puts her own narration in abyss, first telling the story of the book once, and then “repeats,” this time in a sort of lecture. The words of the music have nothing to do with what’s being described, but the musicality, the intensity of the electronic sounds and strings, the piano, the marked rhythm, complement the visual narrative and enrich it with a powerful intensity and emotion. It’s impossible to remain indifferent to such a clip!

4. Plants, insects, and nature

Today, Björk is at the climax of her stylistic research. Her costumes are so elaborate that, at times, you don’t even recognize her anymore. She plays with masks, clothes, volumes, and colors.

Her world is that of plants, flora, and fauna. She is able to recreate the imagery of aquatic and plant organisms, playing with shapes reminiscent of feathers and the tentacles of certain fish, colors reminiscent of jellyfish and the shapes of algae.

She likes to combine colors that you wouldn’t intuitively put together, such as violet with green, yellow with navy blue, or coral red with blue. This creates a unique universe reminiscent of the visual diversity to be found in nature, whether in the jungle, with parrots or exotic plants, or on aquatic animals.

On her album covers, we see creatures that sometimes look human, but we can’t be sure; sometimes they’re deliberately other. They have bodies, but seem to come from another world. In the same way, they look like digital images, but you can’t be 100% sure. Björk exploits different mediums to create an artistic world of her own.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Björk is an artist whose artistic language is both musical and visual, and who has built a world of her own. Her music, which defies classification, is rooted and enriched in this vibe that destabilizes you and leaves you with tons of questions. Björk has shown herself to be both a great musician and a great visual artist.

Storytelling is the art of telling a story and engaging your audience through a well-constructed narrative. As an artist, this means building a universe around your music and creating a strong, recognizable identity for your fans. That can include lots of different things: the genesis of your project, visual aesthetics, collaborations with other artists, and tons more.

In the French electronic music scene, many artists use storytelling to promote their projects, in France and abroad. In this article, we’ll show you how you can draw inspiration from the French Touch artists from the 90s, as well as from the new generation of French electronic music artists.

Send your music to playlists, media outlets, labels, and electronic music professionals ⬇️

1. Building an identity

When you think of the French Touch, of course you’re gonna think of the robot duo Daft Punk. Throughout their career, the characters they play have given them a strong identity, particularly in their concerts and music videos.

Many other French artists have created strong identities around their music, such as:

L’Impératrice, with its retro-futuristic vibe visible in every aspect of their communications: artworks, videos, onstage costumes, etc.

Bolivard, with his quirky, humorous style in lyrics, music videos, and the tone used on his social networks. His black-and-white outfits are also an easy way to identify him.

Jacques, who uses everyday objects on stage to build his songs.

These artists are a good source of inspiration if you want to develop a world of your own. This doesn’t require huge financial resources: the key is to find elements that distinguish and resemble you.

To ensure that your audience is truly involved with your project, remember to transcribe this identity in all your actions: communications on social networks and with the media, concerts, music videos, visuals, etc. Through repetition, the audience will naturally understand your universe and remember you.

2. Capitalize on collaborations

In the French Touch music of the 90s, there was a strong notion of bands and collaboration between different artists. They understood that there’s strength in numbers! One example is the Stardust project, in which Alan Braxe collaborated with Thomas Bangalter (half of the group Daft Punk) and Benjamin Diamond for the famous “Music Sounds Better With You.” Versailles is also a key location for the French Touch, with artists such as Air, Phoenix, and Alex Gopher. All these artists collaborated in different ways, via their productions or for concerts. And this continues to the present day, with Alan Braxe and DJ Falcon‘s joint project.

They aren’t the only collaboration in the new generation: with labels like Ed Banger (Justice, Breakbot & Irfane, MYD), Roche Musique (Darius, Kartell, Cézaire) and Club Azur (Kungs, Upsilone, Victor Flash). These collectives are like families, with artists evolving together over several years and supporting each other.

This type of collaboration is an asset for storytelling. There’s a lot to say about collaboration:

Explain the context of the encounter: how it came about, why you decided to work together, etc. Audiences love to hear behind-the-scenes stories and anecdotes. Social networks are excellent tools for maintaining this close bond.

Share moments of collaborative work: publish photos or videos of your studio sessions, rehearsals, exchanges of ideas, etc. This allows audiences for both artists to see how you work together.

Organize a joint interview to explain your complementarity, the creative process, etc. You can do this on video, on your social networks, or by contacting electronic music media.

Create exclusive content: making-of, alternative versions of the track, remixes, etc. This exclusive content can be offered to the most loyal fans, with the purchase of an album or on a special edition of the release.

In addition to collaborations with members of your collective or labels, you can also gradually turn to other artists, in your country and abroad. This could involve producing a remix or featuring a track. In this way, you can reach a new audience and reinforce your storytelling.

Collaboration and featuring in electronic music

3. Paying tribute to French culture

French culture is rich and enjoys a strong international reputation. In recent years, more and more French artists have capitalized on this. French lyrics, for example, are much more common in electronic music than they used to be.

One of the groups that started this trend was the Paradis duo, who covered French chanson classics by Alain Souchon, for example. Bon Entendeur has also followed this trend, first with mixtapes featuring the voices of French celebrities, then with remixes of artists such as Françoise Hardy and Pierre Bachelet.

Producing a cover of a French song is also a good way of paying tribute to French culture. One example is Isaac Delusion‘s “Couleur Menthe à l’Eau,” a cover of Eddy Mitchell, which has become one of the band’s most popular tracks on streaming platforms.

Taking inspiration from a culture has to be done with sincerity, not just to ride a trend. This is where storytelling comes in: when releasing a cover version, for example, take the time to explain why you chose the track, what it means to you and how you approached the production of the song. This will reinforce your authenticity and show your willingness to pay tribute to the track.

4. Join forces with other creative fields

In addition to culture, there are many other areas associated with France, such as fashion and gastronomy. Relying on these areas for your storytelling can help you gain popularity, even abroad. Electronic artists understand this, and regularly associate themselves with brands or events.

The Ed Banger label, for example, has collaborated with Chanel on an exclusive vinyl release (“Midday / Midnight”) and a show on Radio Chanel. The Kitsuné label also plays on this complementarity, offering releases on its label, a fashion brand, and cafés in major capitals, like Paris, New York, and Tokyo.

Companies and brands in the creative fields are looking for original tracks that you don’t hear on the radio. So they’re on the lookout for new talent. Promoting your tracks to music professionals, the media, etc. and radio stations could therefore help you gain visibility with this target audience and obtain a synch opportunity. For example, the soundtrack to the Emily in Paris series features many French electronic artists in their development phase.

You can also take advantage of this trend without necessarily having an official partnership with a brand or event. An example is Anoraak and its track “Gang”, which has become very popular on Instagram, thanks to fashion brands and media using it in Reels.

For example:

Highlight iconic locations in your visuals and videos. If you produce electronic tracks without lyrics, your audience may not know where you’re from. So, you can introduce a few references to your nationality if you like. A well-known example is Else’s worldwide hit “Paris.” In reference to the title, its artwork shows a panoramic view of Paris with the Eiffel Tower.

Create content around cultural and sporting events, such as the Cannes Film Festival or the Olympic Games: a playlist, a mixtape, a YouTube video, etc. This can give you visibility on social networks and in media outlets looking for musical content linked to these events.

Team up with creators in other fields, such as art, cooking, sports, etc. For example, you could ask people whose work you appreciate to use your track in a video, or to let you mix at an event. This collaboration will be an opportunity to broaden your audience and create storytelling around the project.

5. Keep the mystery

Finally, of course, we can’t talk about the French touch without mentioning the question of anonymity. Daft Punk decided to be totally anonymous, but your mystery doesn’t have to go that deep.

In the age of social networking, it’s more difficult to be totally anonymous, but many French electronic artists play on an element of mystery. Examples include Vladimir Cauchemar, who uses a mask, and Gesaffelstein, who has a dark universe and is not present on social networks.

There are many ways of cultivating a sense of mystery to strengthen your storytelling:

Tease upcoming releases or concert dates with visuals and videos that hint at upcoming projects.

Organize surprises: last-minute concerts, unannounced releases, online Q&A sessions, etc.

Use intriguing visuals: if it suits your identity, you can use visuals where you’re not fully visible, or leave clues that leave the audience free to interpret.

Limit your online presence: to go against overexposure on social networks, some artists choose to limit their presence to a few key posts: announcing a release, a concert date, etc. This is particularly relevant if you already have a base of loyal subscribers who will see your posts, even if you don’t post regularly.

Storytelling is an indispensable element in making your musical project visible and cultivating a bond with your audience. In electronic music, taking inspiration from French Touch artists can be a good way of building your identity. Take a look at the communications of the artists you like, too. Strong storytelling will be a real asset when it comes to contacting the music media and developing your visibility!

– Translated by Kole Wright –

—

Promote your music with Groover 🔥

YouTube has more than 2 billion logged-in users every month and billions of videos. For musicians, it remains one of the best places to post and promote their music, and benefit from the platform’s long-form content structure. All it takes is one music video, cover video, lyric video, or loop of a song’s visual component to blow up and have you and your work get well-deserved recognition.

A Youtube link (or SoundCloud link) – private or public – is all you need to send your music to the media and music industry pros of your choice that are available on Groover! Find more than 3,000 Youtube channels, playlists, radios, blogs and labels directly in your account.

Here’s how to promote your music on YouTube:

1. Use Youtube Ads to Increase Your Visibility On the Platform

This is the most obvious way to promote music directly on Youtube because ads are ubiquitous on the platform.

Ads on Youtube are super customizable and can be placed in different spots:

Ads that appear directly on the YouTube home page to shortcut a potential viewer to your YouTube channel

Ads associated with keywords that appear when a user searches on YouTube (feel free to use a keyword tool to help you out!)

Ads broadcast before/during/after a video

Ads visible only on mobile phones

To start creating ads on Youtube, you need to have a YouTube account and create a Google Ads account. If you’ve already done ads on Facebook and Instagram, you’ll notice that the process is similar.

To create your Youtube ad, you have to choose:

The video you want to boost

The format of the ad and its location (in a video, in a search, etc.)

A target audience

A determined budget that will be linked to the cost per click or per view

Feel free to experiment with different formats for Youtube ads and follow up on them regularly to understand which one works best for promoting your music! Remember, targeting your Youtube ads is key. It’s a powerful tool that can be harnessed by using the resources made available by Google to help users get ads.

2. Get Your Youtube Channel Verified

Verification is a dream on many platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and/or Instagram, but perhaps the platform on which verification has the greatest impact is Youtube. The verification badge needs 100,000 subscribers and adds no extra features. For musicians, what counts is the Official Artist Channel, which provides you with exclusive benefits:

gives you access to detailed stats

brings together the subscribers of your Topic channel, your Vevo channel and your own channel

allows you to promote your merch and tours directly under your Youtube videos

To get one, you need at least one official release on YouTube delivered by a distributor or label, and they make the request for you.

3. Make Music Videos and Clips that Illustrate Your Music

On an artist’s YouTube channel, you’d expect to find visuals for their music, so make sure you have visual content that is engaging enough to keep viewers watching, even if they don’t know the song. Including the song title in the video is crucial for better SEO on video sharing platforms like YouTube, and will allow any intrigued listeners to move over to a streaming platform to add your song to their music library.

On YouTube, clips are king, so we advise you to upload as consistently as possible! Image is inseparable from music, especially on YouTube, which remains a platform for music and entertainment. In addition, short clips are the perfect material to promote with for Youtube Ads. You can also put your clips on Vevo through a partner distributor, and our Vevo vs YouTube comparison explains what it adds to a regular channel.

4. Offer a Variety of Content On Your Channel

As an artist, your YouTube channel is mainly used to post and promote your music videos, but there are plenty of other ways to showcase your work on Youtube. Users enjoy learning more about the lives of creators and artists, and this is reflected in the popularity of vlogs on the platform. You can totally – if you have the time and the inclination – offer other video formats on Youtube, be it vlogs, behind the scenes videos, or your musical influences… this will allow you to build a real community around your project. All of this extra content you offer is what contributes to the storytelling that is so important in increasing the visibility of your music.

You can also create curated playlists for your fans to listen to. This is a great way for your fanbase to get to know you and listen to your music, as well as music you like. This is a key promotional tool for any independent artist to gain listeners and subscribers.

5. Use Keywords

The title of the YouTube video is crucial because it must allow you to get as much out of the search as possible and grab a user’s attention. Don’t forget to write a suitable description and add relevant tags to each of your videos; including keywords in the video description is essential to improve visibility and increase views, as it can help a user find the video without knowing the title.

Keep the title short and straight to the point for your live videos and music videos, such as your song name and artist name. For your other videos, you can analyze what is working the most at the moment on YouTube and adapt the content, title, and description with potentially trending keywords in the tags (as long as they are relevant). Youtube Autocomplete and Google Trends are good tools to find the keywords searched by language and country and to know the associated trends. Keywords are only one part of how YouTube recommends videos, and our guide on getting your music discovered on YouTube explains how the algorithm also weighs viewer engagement.

For example, you can find YouTube searches for “jazz piano” worldwide over the last 30 days. You will also find related searches and where those terms are searched, and you can also compare with similar terms to see which ones are most searched:

6. Create Intriguing Thumbnails

Now that your video is visible on the platform, you want as many users as possible to click on it. The thumbnail should attract attention and make people want to know more. In general, colorful images are what catch the eye, but the picture quality is most important. If it is blurry or poorly framed, it suggests that the video is also poor quality. We therefore advise you to remember to take pictures/stills when you record a video for your channel to ensure a good result. You can also do simple edits using apps like Canva.

7. Create a Connection With Your Audience

Listening and building relationships with subscribers is super important in order to increase your YouTube subscriber count and showcase your music online. We advise you to like and respond to certain comments on your posts to create a dialogue with your audience and be engaged. The YouTube Studio App allows you to manage your profile, easily create playlists and reply to comments directly on a mobile!

You can also make community posts that allow you to tease future videos, talk about new updates you may have and stay in touch with your new fans. These posts can be plain text, or contain images, videos, GIFs, Youtube playlists, or even a poll.

8. Collaborate With Other Artists and Creators

YouTube is full of talented creators and artists. A great way to reach more people is to do collabs and combine your fanbases. Whether it’s a purely musical collaboration or something more general with a creator of the platform, all ideas can bring visibility to your Youtube channel and allow you to gain subscribers that may not have seen your content otherwise. Contact the artists and creators who you would like to work with via the email address provided in the ‘About’ tab of their channel or on social networks.

9. Boost Your Other Platforms With Youtube

With YouTube, you can also boost the visibility of your other platforms! Every video you post is a showcase for your music and the description allows you to talk about your other channels. Feel free to place a cross-platform link in your bio and at the end of the descriptions under your videos to direct viewers to your other socials where they can find more content.

To promote a future release or clip, you can simply post teasers and invite users to follow you on Spotify or YouTube Music, for example, to find all your songs as soon as they are released.

10. Place Your Video on Popular YouTube Channels

Getting your music video a placement on a popular YouTube channel is a great way to spread the word about your latest track and redirect people to your personal YouTube channel. There are many channels that offer this in all musical styles, and some curators even offer to post the songs with animations or to post the lyrics. Some placements are paid and others are not, so don’t hesitate to ask the channel manager via their email, often indicated in the “about” tab.

You can also submit your music to YouTube channels directly on Groover!

You may think that your work is done once the filming of your music video is finished, but in reality, your work has only just begun. The next step is to promote it and, as an independent artist, that’s where things can get tricky because, unlike the biggest names in the music industry, you don’t have the backing of a record label or an already large and established fanbase.

You have to promote it all by yourself and when coming up with a good marketing strategy, the thing to keep in mind is that not only do you want your number of views to climb steadily, but you also want your viewers to actively engage with your music video by liking it or by leaving a comment.

This may seem like a lot but don’t worry, here are a few strategies that can help you promote your music video on the Internet.

1. The better you target your audience, the better results you will get

If you’re hoping to get real results from a video marketing strategy, the first thing you need to do is target the right audience for your music. In other words, you need to find your niche.

The truth is that not everyone is going to like or even understand your music, and that’s okay. There are over 8 billion people in the world and your job is to find those who will resonate with your art and you need to share your music video with them. By narrowing your range, you’re actually much more likely to grow your audience and fanbase organically.

With that in mind, the first thing you need to do is define your musical genre, be it hip-hop, rap, country, or flamenco … Once you have your genre, you can find your target audience and the next step is to find out where they like to spend their time online. Is it YouTube? Instagram? TikTok? Facebook? All of the above? Bear in mind that unless you’re creating a very particular type of music that only appeals to a certain age group, it’s most likely that you will have to promote your music video on multiple social media platforms.

2. Make sure you optimize your music video when you upload it to YouTube

One of the most important online platforms for promoting a music video is YouTube, as it’s one of the biggest online music discovery platforms with almost 2.5 billion users.

With this in mind, the first thing to do if you don’t already have one, is to create a YouTube account. Similarly, if you haven’t set up your channel page yet, make sure that it is clear and complete as you want to come across as professional.

Ok, so you’ve got your music video ready to go and you want to upload it to YouTube to finally share it with the world. The problem is, there are over three million videos uploaded to YouTube every day. Yes, you read that right. That’s a huge amount of content and if you want to give your own video a fighting chance against the competition, you need to optimize it.

To do, this, you want to choose the title of your video carefully and make it as attention-grabbing as possible. YouTube also allows you to write a description of your video, so include all the relevant information about it. Another thing to do is align your music video’s tags with those of other popular videos in your genre, as this will allow your video to appear as a recommendation, which is a great way to drive traffic to it.

Finally, you should add any relevant Google keywords to your video’s metadata to increase the chances of your music video appearing in search results (and therefore getting more views!).

3. There’s no way around it, you need to use YouTube advertising

You’ve optimized your music video and it is now up on YouTube. You may think that there’s nothing more you can do to promote it on the platform but actually, there is.

You now need to look into YouTube advertising. Essentially, it is a service that promotes your video by showing it to potential fans.

From a practical point of view, it’s important to know that you need a Google account to use YouTube advertising. It can also be a YouTube account or a Gmail account.

Now, the problem with advertising on YouTube is that it costs money and since you’re not signed to a record label, this will have to come out of your own pocket. With this in mind, an important thing to consider when looking into YouTube ads is your budget. Bear in mind that even a small budget can have a big impact on your number of views and it’s better to start small and increase the amount you invest later if the campaign is working.

On the YouTube advertising platform, you can choose a daily budget or a campaign total and you need to make sure you select a start date and an end date for your campaign, whether it’s one week, one month, or six months…

When deciding on your campaign, one thing you have to put in is some keywords. Remember that an effective promotional strategy is about targeting the right audience so with that in mind, you need to be as specific as possible with the keywords you choose.

A good way to do this is to ask yourself: who does my music sound like? And on whose video would I like my music video to appear as an advert?

You’ve got a name, great! Write it down along with a few other words. Since you want to be as specific as possible, you don’t need to have a lot of keywords, just a few very specific ones.

Once you’ve submitted your form, your campaign needs to be approved and once it’s launched, you need to keep an eye on the results. Are the views climbing as much as you’d hoped? Are the results better than you expected and, if so, do you perhaps want to extend the campaign?

4. You need to engage with other music videos and submit your own to YouTube playlists

It’s important to always keep in mind that YouTube is a lively and buzzing community where content creators share their work and viewers share their thoughts and engage with said content.

This is why each video has a comment section under it and you need to promote your music video in that space as well.

Not only do you need to respond to any comments made on your own music video, but a great way to drive traffic to your video from another channel or page is to like and comment on similar videos to yours. This may be a bit time consuming but the results are worth it as it’s one of the best ways to grow organically on the platform, as well as build an active and engaged community around your music.

Another great way to drive traffic to your music video on the platform is to be featured in a video playlist. This works in the way as being featured on a popular Spotify playlist and can be a huge help in promoting your music video.

For this to happen, you need to submit your music video to YouTube playlist curators, maybe some that create playlists featuring indie music and independent artists.

You can either reach out to them independantly by using any email you may find on their website or YouTube channel, or you can even message them directly on social media platforms and interact with them there. Or, if you want to simplify the process, you can go through a music promotion service such as Groover that can put you in touch with these curators and submit your music video on your behalf.

—

Get in touch with Youtube channels 👇

—

5. Promote your YouTube channel on other social media platforms to drive traffic to your music video

The online world is not only vast, but also interconnected and you can use one online platform to promote content on another.

Regardless of how many followers you have, be it one or one million, you need to share and promote your music video on your social media platforms and make sure you get your music heard.

To do this, you need to have good content and it needs to be about your music video, or at least, about your music. A great way to use Instagram reels or TikTok for example is to show a short 30 second extract of your music video. You can also share some behind-the scene moments, any interviews you may have done to promote the music video… really, anything that is relevant.

Another thing you can do on social media that is quite effective and could be a good addition to your social media strategy, is to use influencer marketing.

To do this, you need to look up people who have a larger social media following than you in your niche and offer to collaborate with them, whether this be featuring them in a music video, or asking them to share your music video to their followers and subscribers in order to reach new fans.

As a quick final word on social media, similarly to YouTube ads, you can run social media ads such as Facebook ads or Instagram ads to target specific audiences and demographics. These can be incredibly useful to grab people’s attention and reach a larger fanbase than you would otherwise.

6. Keep in mind other online platforms to promote your music video

Music blogs sure aren’t as big as social media nowdays but they can still be a helpful tool to promote your music video. Not only that, but being featured on one as an unsigned artist can help you gain credibility amongst industry professionals and within the music industry in general.

Now, circling back to the first section, proper targeting is key to an effective promotional strategy so always keep in mind the genre of music you’re creating and reach out to blogs specialised in that genre.

What you want to do once you’ve pinned down your genre and have made a list of the possible online blogs, magazines, or even radio stations, that could suit you, is to search their website for their contact information or any sort of submission page. When contacting bloggers for a chance to feature your music video, always make sure that you give them all the important information so as to make it easier for them to go over your submission. Similarly to curated YouTube playlists, you can go through Groover to contact various media outlets that can help promote your music video.

To conclude, there are plenty of ways to promote a music video on the internet and by combining a proper use of Youtube as well as promoting your video on other media platforms, you can increase your number of views and get your music heard.

Music videos are a great way to promote your music, but how do you go about promoting your music video in the first place?

Let’s face it, competition in the music industry is fierce and you need to give yourself the best chance of success. And in the age of viral videos, it’s no surprise that video content is the most popular type of content. Not only is it a great way to promote your music, but it’s also a great branding tool, as your fans can see you and really see what you’re about as an artist.

So you took the plunge and created a music video. Now what? Don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to promote your music video and increase its visibility to reach a wider audience.

Here are a few effective strategies.

1. Social media is your new best friend

Having an online presence is important for any musician and social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn are crucial in today’s music industry for any artist who wants to stand out and grow their fan base.

What you need to do is share engaging posts about your music video and don’t forget to use targeted hashtags to boost it. Make sure you encourage your followers to like, share, and comment on your video to increase its visibility, and always welcome and share user-generated content related to your music video.

But if your goal is to promote your music video, it’s important to get on TikTok. Like the others, it’s a social media platform but it’s targeted to video content and used to create, share, and discover short videos ranging from a few seconds to a minute so using TikTok is a great way to connect with your audience and promote your music video in a smaller format. TikTok’s algorithm can push content into the spotlight, leading to viral trends and challenges, meaning that a catchy music video or song snippet can quickly gain traction and reach a wide audience. So take a look at what’s trending on TikTok and choose the footage you show based on your research.

One thing that seems to always work well is making-of videos of your music video or interviews related to the making of your music video. These can add depth to your content and can attract more viewers interested in the creative process behind the music video.

2. Don’t forget YouTube and other video platforms

With the rise of TikTok and Instagram reels, YouTube and other video platforms such as Vevo, Vimeo, and Dailymotion seem to have taken a step back. And that’s understandable, because attention spans are getting shorter, and people are tending to prefer bite-sized content.

That said, these platforms are still extremely popular and they even offer this new shorter format through YouTube shorts, so you should take advantage of them to share your content and promote your music video.

If you don’t already have one, create a YouTube channel and upload your first video to encourage people to subscribe to your new channel. When you publish your music video, make sure it’s optimized for search engines by using relevant keywords in the title, description, and tags of your video. This can help your video rank higher in search engine results and attract more viewers and maybe even subscribers.

A great thing about YouTube is that it can be interesting from a financial point of view, as you can actually earn money with YouTube videos, through ad revenue, affiliate marketing, and even direct sales.

If you want a case study of success on YouTube, take a look at the music video of the song “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. It became a global phenomenon and reached billions of views on the platform in a few short months.

<iframe title="Luis Fonsi - Despacito ft.

3. Use Spotify as a teaser for your music video

One of the best things you can do to promote your music video is to get your music online and upload it to a distribution platform like Spotify. Although Spotify doesn’t play full-length music videos like other platforms such as YouTube, you can still promote your music video by creating a video loop that represents part of your video.

You can do this with Spotify Canvas, a tool that lets you upload short visual loops to accompany your music on the Spotify mobile app instead of the static album art.

To use Canvas, you must be a verified artist on Spotify by applying through the Spotify for Artists platform, and once verified, you can access the dashboard and upload your video loop for each of your tracks. Most people are visual and if they like the teaser, chances are they’ll go check out the full music video.

Don’t forget to submit your music to playlists, as a curated playlist could help you reach a wider audience and promote your music to new fans and listeners, which in turn could drive traffic to your music video.

Looking to get into playlists? ⬇️

4. Rely on word-of-mouth publicity

Word-of-mouth advertising may still be best when it comes to building credibility, so don’t hesitate to contact relevant media outlets such as music blogs, online magazines, and music websites to pitch your music video for possible coverage or a feature.

You can even write a compelling press release announcing the release of your video, making sure to include high-quality images, a link to the video, and any interesting or newsworthy angles that might attract attention.

You can also contact music influencers or bloggers in your niche who have a large following and ask them to share your video with their audience, to increase the visibility of your video and help you reach new fans. You can go further and feature them in your videos, and the same goes for your fellow artists.

Collaborations are a great idea when it comes to promoting your music video and partnerships with other musicians, record labels and music industry professionals can help you extend your reach and promote your music video to a new audience. So always carry business cards on you and remember that touring and merchandising can also be good ways of getting your name out there, as gigs can arouse the curiosity of people who can then search for you online and stumble upon your music video.

5. Advertise, advertise, advertise!

You may think that the music video is the publicity tool for your music, but you need to advertise your music video first and there are plenty of ways to do this. It can be a good idea to invest in targeted advertising on social media platforms, such as Facebook Ads, Instagram Ads, or YouTube Ads to reach specific demographic groups or regions, as these platforms allow you to tailor your campaigns according to various parameters.

To do this, you can either go through the own advertising platforms of these apps (Facebook Ads Manager and Instagram Ads) or you can use Google Ads (formerly known as AdWords), which is Google’s online advertising platform that allows you to display ads on Google’s search engine results page and on its advertising network.

Conclusion

With the rise of social media and image and video applications, people are becoming increasingly visual. This led to a peak in video marketing and because of this, it’s becoming easier and easier to drive traffic to your music video. However, remember that the key to promoting a music video effectively is a multifaceted approach that will allow you to reach a wide audience.

—

Promote your music ⬇️

In today’s digital age, the music industry has greatly evolved due to the emergence of various streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, and SoundCloud. These platforms have revolutionized the way music is consumed and have opened up immense opportunities for both established and independent artists. However, with the vast amount of content available, it has become increasingly challenging for artists to stand out and get their music heard. This is where lyrics videos come in – an effective tool for music promotion. Lyrics videos have gained significant popularity in recent years, offering numerous benefits to artists looking to promote their music effectively.

Let’s explore the reasons why using lyrics videos to promote your music may be the ideal strategy for garnering attention and expanding your fan base.

1. Increase The Connection Between Listener and Artist

Firstly, lyrics videos provide a visual element that enhances the listener’s experience. While music alone can create an emotional connection, the combination of visuals with the lyrics can deepen the audience’s engagement with the song. By displaying the lyrics alongside the music, fans can sing along and connect with the music on a deeper level. This connection enhances the overall listening experience and can create a stronger bond between the artist and the listener.

2. More shares on social media

Additionally, lyrics videos have become a popular tool for sharing music online. Social media platforms like YouTube, where millions of users actively search for music, have become a hub for discovering new artists. With a well-produced lyrics video, artists can capture the attention of potential fans and create a lasting impression. The visual component of the video promotes sharing on various social media platforms, ultimately increasing visibility and attracting new listeners. To make sure those searches lead to your video, follow our tips to get discovered on YouTube with better titles, descriptions and tags.

3. Establishing Your Brand

Lyrics videos also play a vital role in music marketing and branding. They allow artists to showcase their creativity and style, creating a unique identity that resonates with their target audience. By incorporating branding elements such as logos, color schemes, and visually appealing aesthetics, artists can establish a recognizable presence in the competitive music industry. This recognition can lead to increased exposure, opportunities for partnerships, and ultimately, a bigger fan-base.

4. Promotion Tool

Moreover, lyrics videos offer numerous promotional opportunities for independent artists. In the past, major record labels held a monopoly over marketing and distribution, making it difficult for independent artists to compete. However, with the advent of digital music distribution platforms like TuneCore, CD Baby, and ReverbNation, artists can now distribute their music globally without the need for a record label. Lyrics videos act as promotional tools that independent artists can utilize to showcase their talents, build a fan-base, and potentially attract the attention of record labels.

5. Gain exposure and music industry support

Additionally, lyrics videos increase the likelihood of being featured on popular music blogs, internet radio stations, and playlists curated by streaming services. This exposure not only increases the chances of getting discovered by new fans but also opens doors for potential collaborations and opportunities to perform live gigs. With the right promotion and branding strategies, lyrics videos can lead to increased industry recognition and propel an artist’s music career to new heights.

6. Royalties

Another advantage of using lyrics videos for music promotion is the ability to monetize the content. By uploading the videos on platforms like YouTube, artists can generate revenue through ads, sponsored content, and collaborations. With a loyal fan-base and a growing number of subscribers, artists can earn royalties from streaming services, digital music sales, and even merchandise sales.

Conclusion

In conclusion, lyrics videos have become an essential tool for artists in the music industry to effectively promote their music. With the ability to enhance the listening experience, capture attention, and create lasting impressions, lyrics videos offer a multitude of benefits for both established and independent artists. By utilizing this form of visual content, artists can gain recognition, grow their fan-base, and stand out in a highly competitive music landscape. So, whether you’re an aspiring artist or an industry veteran, lyrics videos can be a powerful tool to propel your music career forward.

As an emerging musician, artist branding is essential. Of course, you need to make good music to start with. But as Steve Jobs once said, “packaging can create a story”.

And when it comes to artist branding, the “packaging” refers to all the different ways you present yourself to your audience. Logo, colors, tone of voice… All these elements will contribute to creating a story around your music.

In this article, we are going to cover everything you need to know about artist branding! Ready? Let’s dive in 👇

1. What is Branding?

Before we dive any deeper, let’s explore what branding actually is. We all have an intuition of what brands are. But giving a precise definition is a bit harder.

A brand is defined as “a name, term, design, symbol or any other feature that distinguishes one seller’s good or service from those of other sellers” (Wikipedia).

By extension, the components of a “branding” strategy include product design, brand identity, communication style, and “any other technique that aims to create a lasting impression in the minds of customers”.

While we often think of branding in the context of companies, the truth is that all these concepts are applicable to a musical project. A band’s logo, the way they communicate with their fans, the type of photos they post on Instagram… All these elements contribute to an artist’s branding.

Is your music ready to be released? Then it’s time to prepare your promotion strategy! The best way to do this is to contact playlist curators, radio stations, media outlets, record labels...

With Groover, you can contact curators and music professionals that precisely match your song 👇

2. First: Define What your Brand Stands For

In the intro, we mentioned that your artist branding will convey a story around your music. So, ask yourself this question: what is the story you want to tell?

What does your musical project stand for? Do you aim to bring joy and love to your listeners? Or is your music dark and introspective? Or maybe it’s light and not meant to be taken too seriously?

Whatever the case may be, you need to define a few keywords that your music project stands for. Of course, this doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Your brand is closely tied to the music you make. If you’re not sure how to position your brand, ask some friends how they would describe your music. You can also get in touch with branding experts, on Fiverr for instance, to help you define your project.

Once you have a few words to describe your music, it’s time to move on to the actual branding.

3. Build your Visual Identity

The most obvious part of any brand is its logo. McDonalds, Coca-Cola, Apple… When you think of those brands, you immediately have an image that springs to mind.

The goal should be the same with your music. When people hear your band or artist name, they should immediately have an image in mind.

As an artist, you can either develop your own logo, or use a picture of yourself or your band. In both cases, your visual identity should communicate the words you’ve identified in Step #1.

Let’s look at two examples. When Skrillex burst onto the scene in 2010, his music could be qualified of “extreme”, “chaotic” and even “futuristic”. At the time, this was the logo he was using:

We can clearly see how this logo is a perfect encapsulation of his music.

Another example we can look at is the band The National. The National are known for their classy, elegant and serious style of indie rock. When we look at their band pictures, we see them all dressed in black, and rarely smiling:

Once you settle on a logo or picture, make sure to use it consistently across all your social media channels. This includes Facebook and Instagram, but also platforms like Spotify, Soundcloud and Apple Music. The goal is to become immediately recognizable.

However, your visual identity goes beyond just your logo. Take a look at the Instagram account of House producer Oliver Schories:

With the black-and-white filter, there is a deliberate choice here to convey a sober and serious image. When defining your visual identity, think about the colors you use, as well as the typography. All these choices should reinforce the words that you defined in Step #1.

4. Choose your Tone of Voice

“Tone of voice” is a marketing term that defines the language in which a company expresses itself. This includes not only the words it uses, but also the way it speaks to its customers.

In the context of artist branding, your tone of voice also covers how you communicate with your listeners. How do you express yourself on your social channels? Is it funny and jokey? Or serious and mysterious?

If we look at Fred Again, one of the most popular electronic artists currently, his communication style is very distinctive:

We could qualify this style of communication as “excited”, “raw” and “unfiltered”. This tone of voice contributes to making Fred Again a very relatable artist, and someone people connect with.

When thinking about your tone of voice, think about how you communicate naturally.

For example, Billie Eilish rarely writes any captions on her Instagram posts. However, she will post a lot of random photographs that convey her universe.

Do you prefer posting pictures and short captions on Instagram? Or do you prefer long debates on Twitter? The more natural your tone of voice, the easier it will be to keep it up. Don’t pick any tone of voice just because you think it’s cool. Pick something that matches your own personality. This will make it easier to stay consistent.

5. What’s the Bottom Line

The truth is, people want to connect with a person, not just an artist. And the more they know about you, the more they will connect with you. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to share every aspect of your personal life on social media. But the more you communicate with your audience, the more they will connect with you and your music.

A great concept popularized by Gary Vee is “Document vs. Create”. The idea is to focus more of your time on documenting your journey instead of the creation phase.

Instead of posting just once to Instagram when your song is out, document the journey of creating the song. Post behind-the-scenes pictures, videos of recording sessions, extracts of the song as it evolves etc. This will help your audience connect with you on a more personal level.

Vevo is known as the world’s leading music video network, giving artists global exposure and providing substantial marketing and promotional support. Artists can publish their music videos on Vevo for several reasons, such as to expand their audience reach, monetize their videos, showcase their music, and increase their fan engagement. Vevo has become an essential part of the music industry and is used by both major record labels and independent artists alike. Though Vevo is known to partner with established artists, there are opportunities for unsigned and indie artists to create a Vevo channel by going through one of their content providers. Why do artists use Vevo? Here is everything you need to know about the platform and how to get a channel to promote your music.

1. What is Vevo? Vevo vs. YouTube

Vevo, short for Video Evolution, is a multinational video hosting service that specializes in high-quality music videos. It was initially formed as a joint venture between major record labels Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment in 2009 (Warner Music Group signed a deal with Vevo in 2016). Vevo’s primary platform for video distribution is YouTube. Vevo works closely with artists and record labels to ensure that their music videos are presented in the best possible quality, often featuring high production values and professional visual aesthetics.

While Vevo initially operated as a separate website, it later shifted its primary distribution to YouTube, where official Vevo channels were established for individual artists and record labels. These channels feature the artist’s music videos, live performances, interviews, and other related content.

Vevo has a large global following of over 20 million subscribers on YouTube

2. What does Vevo do for artists?

Vevo can be very powerful in developing artist’s careers and boosting their visibility. They provide artists with an official channel to showcase their music videos, giving artists a certain credibility and professionalism by being associated with the platform. Because Vevo has an established global audience, artists can tap into a larger fanbase and reach new listeners and music lovers. Vevo also provides artists the opportunity to monetize their music videos and make money through advertising revenue.

Often Vevo will collaborate with artists and record labels to promote music video releases, providing additional marketing and promotional support. They can offer strategic editorial support on Vevo’s social networks as well as customized and promoted playlisting services. They also create Vevo originals, filming around 1,000 original music videos and live sessions every year from both established and emerging artists, creating beautiful content. Overall, they can be used as a resource to help increase visibility and solidify an artist’s standing in the music industry.

Why do artists use Vevo? They create beautiful original content to showcase upcoming and established talents in the industry

3. What are the benefits of being on Vevo?

As stated above, Vevo can do a lot for artists primarily because of their global reach. The benefits of having your music videos on Vevo mainly center around expanding the reach of your project, but also can help your branding and image. Your music can be easily discovered by new audiences worldwide and this could lead to potential opportunities and collaborations. A major benefit of being on Vevo is the credibility and legitimacy that it can bring to your project. If you are associated with Vevo and have an official channel, this can be huge for your reputation as an artist.

In addition, you’ll have access to detailed analytics and insights to track the performance of your music videos and better understand the demographics of your audience. With this type of information, you’ll be able to optimize your promotional strategies or even pinpoint where you can be successful playing live or touring. Lastly, artists can earn royalties everytime their video is watched on Vevo.

—

Are you releasing a music video soon?

Send it to media and music channels on Groover👇

—

4. How to get your music videos on Vevo

How do you get your music videos on Vevo? According to their site, any artist, signed or unsigned, can get their content onto Vevo if they distribute their music through one of their content partners. This includes distributing your music with a major label like Universal Music Group or Sony Music, but also independent distributors such as DistroKid, Upstream Distribution, Venice Music, UnitedMasters, Ditto Music, and more. If you are already working with a major record label that has an exisiting partnership with Vevo, it will be a lot easier to set up your Vevo artist channel. Otherwise, as an independent artist, you will need to go through one of the Vevo content providers to create a channel: you can’t submit your videos directly to Vevo. The Vevo for Artists page lists the distributors it works with.

5. How much does it cost to put your video on Vevo?

Technically, it doesn’t cost anything to create your on Vevo channel on YouTube. However, some content providers that are partnered with Vevo will charge artists a fee to set up the channel for them. Contact your content provider / music distributor to figure out how they act as the intermediary between artists and Vevo, if they charge a one time fee to set up your channel or a fee per music video upload.

Conclusion: Should I put my video on Vevo?

Why do artists use Vevo? If you want to share high-quality music videos and get global exposure, then Vevo is probably the best place to do so. However, if you’re looking to share a variety of videos such as behind-the-scenes footage, vlogs, and more, then you should probably do this on your personal YouTube channel. Vevo is really all about high-quality music videos and live sessions. By putting your music video on Vevo and setting up an artist channel, you can gain credibility and strengthen your branding in the music industry. The downside to putting your music videos on Vevo is the limited control of your channel and having to go through Vevo first to get your video approved and published. If you are working with a major record label, Vevo may be the perfect catalyst to push your career even further and increase your revenues. For new artists, however, it could be difficult to get your music videos onto the platform in the first place, and stand out from the rest. That being said, some indie labels and artists have successfully partnered with Vevo, contributing to artist development and bringing them more exposure than they could have gotten on their own!
