2. Who are the blogs, radios and music pros on Groover?

Groover influencers are music enthusiasts who have been handpicked by the Groover team for their ability to spot new musical trends. Today they fall into 3 main categories:

Media outlets: magazines, radio stations, blogs, playlists, YouTube channels… If they like your song, they will share it with their audience, allowing new fans to discover your music.

Labels, Publishers, and Bookers: they are looking for the next talents to sign and promote, working as your potential future partners.

Mentors: managers, coaches, or other professionals in the field. They have been selected for their ability to give constructive advice on your production, your career, or your project.

3. When should I send my music on Groover?

Before starting a campaign on Groover, you need to identify the current phase of your project:

If your project is not artistically finished but you have demos, you can use Groover to contact labels, managers, touring companies, publishers– even if they will often wait to hear a “finished” project- or mentors who will be able to give you detailed advice on your strategy and production. Read our article How to find a Booker?

If your project is mixed, mastered, ready to be released or already released, you are now in the promotion phase of your project. Using Groover can boost your visibility as soon as your first single is released and serve as a springboard before the release of a more ambitious project (EP, album…) or a major event (concert, interview, showcase). In this case, there are two potential ways to proceed- plans A and B below.

Keep in mind that some influencers- especially independent playlists – are much more responsive and efficient when your music has already been released on streaming platforms like Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music etc. Consider excluding these influencers from any campaign you may be running pre-release day and wait until the track is available on streaming platforms before contacting them. You can also add the Spotify link in your track info at that time.

💡 Tip: You can prepare organized lists of influencers– via the little bookmark icon- based on promotion type or timing: “Before release” and “Day of release” for example. This will save you time!

If you don’t know where to start, we strongly advise that you send your music the day of its release or some time after. Contact as many relevant influencers as possible in order to give your song the visibility it deserves!

Remember to regularly remind people who follow you to go listen to your track, look for new contacts, create new relationships with different players in the music world- artists, producers, media / radio / labels etc. If they discover your music and fall in love with it even a year after its release, they will not hesitate to share it with their community. This can continue to attract more and more curious people and fans around your music!

4. Can I send a song that hasn’t been released yet?

Yes, of course! You can use:

An unlisted Youtube link– make sure to check that your video is embeddable.

A private Soundcloud link– be sure to use a shareable link with a small code called ‘token’ at the end, obtained by clicking “Share” under the Soundcloud player.

Remember to indicate the upcoming release date of the song. The musical influencer will thus be warned that the song has not yet been released and therefore they should not share it yet.
If you are looking for a media to share your song as an exclusive premiere, don’t hesitate to specify that it is an Exclusivity thanks to the box specifically provided at the time of sending your song.
If you’re looking for advice on a pre-mix or demo, you can select the Demo option when entering your song information so that music influencers are notified.

5. Write the perfect pitch for your song

Once you have chosen the media, radios, labels and music pros you wish to contact and added a link to your song, the last crucial step before validating your submission is to write a good pitch for your song.

Here are a few tips on how to get attention and make your mark:

1. Specify what you are looking for, don’t leave your contacts in the dark
What are you looking for right now? Visibility (articles, playlist inclusions…) ? A label, a manager, a booker? Need advice on your demo? All of that at once?

2. Adapt your pitch according to the chosen contacts
At the moment, are you looking for a label for the release of your next EP? After playing several concerts, do you now want to work with a tour manager? You want to publicize your recent release to the media?
Don’t hesitate to adapt your request and the information you provide according to the contacts you have chosen, informing them briefly about your current news.

3. Be concise and informative
No matter what happens, the professionals you contact at Groover will listen to your track. Rather than describing your song, try to give them the context. For example, you can give them 1-2 essential points about your project, keeping it concise. A few suggestions:

The release date of your album/single, and the link to listen to it

The context or story behind a music video

Your next gig or the venues of your last important concert dates

A recent opening act you did for a band you admire

Support received for the release in question (crowdfunding, media coverage…)

Your top musical influences

Make sure not to give too much information- try to concentrate on 1-2 essential elements of your project that are likely to interest professionals, 5 lines of text maximum. This is a first contact and their time is limited.

💡 Final Tip: Don’t forget to fill out your profile and keep it up to date. It is a sign of seriousness and an important source of information for professionals who discover your project. It’s also a way to detail your musical universe a little more than in the pitch field!

Magon’s artist profil on Groover

| Read also: How to manage your Budget when releasing your Music for the Best Promotion?

7. What budget should I invest on my Groover campaign?

After 2 years of Groover being alive, the platform’s data clearly show that the most successful campaigns on Groover were all sent to more than 30 contacts (60 Grooviz), and most of them more than 50 contacts (100 Grooviz).

The # of curators / pros chosen will of course depend on your music style and your targets, but with more than 3,000 curators / pros currently active, you risk to be spoiled for choice (though filters can help!)

If you’re looking for visibility: more than 70% of the contacts available on Groover can offer you direct opportunities to get coverage if they have a crush on your music. If it is your main target, your budget can rise over 100-150 Grooviz (50-75 contacts) depending on the music genres to which you identify your music. The more you select curators and pros, the more you increase your chances to get interesting results!

If you want to build your entourage: we recommend here to take your time to target relevant contacts for you and your musical univers. The campaigns can be small and precise.

More advice about which budget you should invest on Groover are available here

8. How does feedback work on Groover?

A feedback is a short text of a minimum of 15 words written by the musical influencer on the song sent by the artist or their representative. Today, the average feedback is close to 40 words. Feedback is private- only you and the musical influencer who wrote it have access to them.

What can an artist expect to read?
The feedback is more or less detailed according to the influencer- who is free to say what they please- with the intention of being constructive (for the artist), explanatory (on the reasons for sharing or not), sincere, and encouraging. Every musical influencer has read and adheres by the Groover Feedback Guide.

9. As an artist, am I guaranteed to get articles or shares?

No, this is not Groover‘s principle. The platform guarantees that your track will be listened to and that you will receive feedback from the chosen blogs, labels and pros. The response rate is indeed higher than 85%, and you get Grooviz – name of the credits on Groover – back if you don’t get an answer within 7 days.

However, we do all our best to guide you towards the right curators & pros for you so you maximize the opportunities you can get. Currently, the acceptation rate – i.e. when your track is shared or when the curator / pro wants to get in touch with you – is around 20%! Two things to remember, which can seem opposite but actually can help find the right balance:

Good targeting is key and will increase your performance

The more you contact curators & pros, the more concrete opportunities you’ll get!

Important: the music curators & pros on Groover remain entirely free to share your song and to contact you or not. If you want to know how campaigns have gone for other musicians, you can read Groover reviews from artists and music pros.

Playing in one of the many music festivals is a very important step in the life of an emerging artist. First of all, let’s say it, playing your music on an outdoor stage in front of a large audience, there is nothing cooler! Then, you are going to make discover your music to a great number of future fans, it is the principle of the festival. We come because we like two or three headliners, we leave having discovered his or her new favorite musician. It’s a great way to promote your music.

We know it’s as hard as it is cool to get a spot in a festival lineup. So we’re centralizing all of our sharpest techniques in this article to help you reach your goal: playing a festival. Don’t thank us now, but don’t forget to invite us when you’re on the mainstage at Coachella.

1. No one will book you for a festival without seeing you live first

The importance of playing live can’t be overstated when it comes to landing a spot in music festival lineups. For artists, performing on stage is not just a chance to hone their craft but also a crucial opportunity to show what they’re really made of. Bookers, promoters, and other industry pros often rely on live performances to gauge an artist’s potential. Even the best studio recording can’t capture the energy, stage presence, and audience interaction that make a concert unforgettable.

Playing live allows artists to create a unique connection with their audience, and it’s precisely this connection that can convince a festival booker to invite them to perform. The magic of a successful concert, where the emotion is palpable and the energy contagious, is a powerful selling point for any decision-maker. Videos of performances can help, but nothing beats the direct, immersive experience of a live show.

To maximize your chances of getting noticed, it’s crucial to invite bookers and industry pros to your gigs. Let them know about your tour dates, offer them invitations, and make sure every performance showcases your full potential. A solid, well-prepared, and energetic performance can be the deciding factor that turns a casual industry spectator into a passionate advocate for your music.

2. Develop your professional network and see who is programming the music festivals you want to be in

Having a great artistic direction and released music is great, but you need to let the main stakeholders know about your existence, otherwise you won’t get very far. So approach the festivals directly. For that, you’ll have to become the Indiana Jones of email addresses. Search the websites of each festival for the right contacts. Search all Linkedin, search all Instagram. You’ll find it like the sleuth that you are. Make a document with the essential information of these people, name – first name, the festival, the role he or she plays in the festival.

Now, make yourself a nice EPK. The electronic press kit – or press kit – is your artist business card. It has to be concise, as much as possible, you are not the only one sending music, if the recipient of your EPK feels that it will be too long to read, they will not read it. But don’t forget the main thing either, you have to find the right balance. There has to be at least one link to your music project.

By the way, needless to say, there’s no point in canvassing if you don’t have enough money to play on stage for a set. It’s good to have at least an EP. And if you already have some experience on stage, inform them. Put a short bio, a link to your social networks, and that’s it.

💡 Don’t hesitate to use Groover to find pros who can get you into festivals – especially bookers/agents – or give you feedback on your music.

Canvassing online for festivals is great, but you should also do it in person. There’s nothing better than catching a pro at the corner of a concert bar or after a conference to convince them. It’s not forbidden but be careful: stay professional, never insist. Being persistent is an asset, it’s true, but there’s a fine line between being reluctant and being prejudiced.

Looking to play live? ⬇️

3. Participate in music competitions and festival auditions

Getting noticed by festival bookers can also be achieved by participating in music competitions and festival auditions. These platforms offer invaluable exposure and the chance to showcase your talent to industry professionals. In the UK, competitions like the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and the Unsigned Music Awards are renowned for launching careers and are accessible to independent artists. Events like Open Mic UK also provide a platform for emerging talents to gain significant exposure. Auditions for festivals such as The Great Escape’s First Fifty showcase and the Tramlines Festival’s Apply to Play program offer artists a direct route to some of the country’s most prestigious stages. For what these applications usually ask for, such as an EPK and proof of live experience, see this guide to music festival applications.

In the US, events like NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest and the International Songwriting Competition (ISC) are highly respected and open to independent musicians. Auditions for South by Southwest (SXSW) and the American Idol auditions also present excellent opportunities for artists to break into the festival circuit. Participating in these competitions and auditions not only boosts your visibility but also demonstrates your commitment and readiness to perform at a high level.

4. Organize your own music festival

Wouldn’t it be a bit crazy to make your own place in a festival, by setting it up yourself? Well not so much, Macki Music Festival for example, is organized by the artist collectives Cracki Records and La Mamie’s. They invite artists who make them vibrate and take the opportunity to make the public discover their music. The idea is not easy to put in place, but who said that it was easy to break into music?

Set up a partnership; bring your friends who are passionate about music with you, and let’s go for an extraordinary adventure. Talk about creating a network of professionals in the music industry; with a festival, you will meet tons of them. It’s also an opportunity to meet artists who are open to conversations (or not) and create a connection that can lead to a collaboration. In short, the repercussions can be quite enormous.

The other side of the coin is that it is very time consuming and expensive. You can’t start organizing a festival without having a good start and a good knowledge of the territory you are trying to work in. Mobilizing an audience, even when you have the right program, is not always easy. You have to develop strong communication skills, become very serious about the administrative part, surround yourself with a bunch of solid people on their supports, we grant you that it is not an easy task. But creating your own place rather than waiting for someone to integrate you into their vision is a great way to climb up and promote your music.

Macki Music Festival

In short, playing in festivals to gain visibility is a must for an emerging musician. Only it’s not easy, it’s true. We know, you don’t lack determination, so draw on it and keep your confidence.

For independent musicians looking to take their music career to the next level, finding a music booking agent can be a game-changer. A music booking agent can help indie artists get more opportunities to perform live and also help navigate the complex landscape of concert bookings and tours. A good booking agent can help with negotiating and coordinating the ins and outs of live shows. Whether you’re a solo artist, a band, or even a DJ, a booking agent can help you gain exposure, reach new audiences, and establish a solid fan-base.

The process of finding the right music booking agent for your needs can be daunting, especially for independent musicians who don’t know where to start! How do you get a booking agent that is right for you? Maybe you’re not looking for a booking agent, but rather, a music promoter. In this guide, we will explore how to get a booking agent for music who can elevate your career to new heights.

1. Define your musical goals and needs: are you ready to work with a booking agent?

Before you start reaching out to potential booking agents, take some time to define your musical goals and needs. Ask yourself, am I at a stage in my career where I need a booking agent? Or maybe I need to find a music manager first? Artist management can often be a first step in finding a booking agent. Some booking agents won’t work with artists that don’t already have a professional entourage, whether that be an artist manager, a music publisher, or a record label. If you have a solid live set and are already playing gigs, a music booking agent could help you take your show on the road or play bigger venues. If you’ve never played live, you may not be ready to work with a booking agent! Try reaching out to artist managers first. You can also find a music manager on Groover.

Usually booking agents want to see that you’ve managed to build a following on your own before committing to representing you. If you can prove to them that you have a good turn out when you play shows, that can show them your potential for touring. If you’ve managed to get gigs on your own and get paid, this can show a booking agent that there is a profit to be made. After all, their goal is to be selling out your shows and making money for everyone! Even if you’re not ready to headline or sell out shows right away, there is always potential to be booked as an opening act on a bigger tour. Having a clear vision of where you are at in your music career will help you determine if a booking agent is right for you.

👉 Learn more about the differences between an artist manager and booking agent

2. Work on your branding and storytelling

For artists looking to get noticed in the music business, you need to work on your branding and storytelling. Of course, you need to produce good music as well and put on a great live show, but crafting a unique universe around your project is super important. Engaging with your community on social media is a good way to strengthen your branding. For the aspiring new artist, having a presence on these platforms like Instagram and TikTok is essential to your artist development and getting potential opportunities. Record labels notice when a music producer or rock band becomes influential overnight because of a viral reel or video. Booking agents notice too! Before contacting potential partners, whether that be in booking, talent management, or record companies, make sure you have a story to tell that stands out from the rest.

3. Research similar artists and network

Building a strong network within the music industry is crucial for independent musicians. Start by researching similar artists in your genre and find out who their booking agents are. Research all the options available to you, among local, regional, and national booking agencies that specialize in your genre. Have any of these booking agents worked with independent artists before? Try to find their contact information through their website or on LinkedIn. Be precise and thoughtful in your research; if you’re a folk artist, there is no point in contacting booking agents that only book punk or rock bands. You want to get an agent that already has a proven track record in your genre!

Don’t be afraid to reach out to artists to ask them about their experience with booking agents. After all, networking doesn’t just happen with music industry professionals, but also with fellow artists! You can learn a lot just by asking around. Who knows, maybe a fellow artist can even put you in touch directly with their booking agent!

4. Play at musical springboards and competitions

Musical springboards and competitions are becoming more popular for emerging artists. A musical springboard is an opportunity or platform that propels an artist’s career forward, providing them with increased visibility, exposure, and opportunities for growth. It acts as a launching pad for an artist’s success in the music industry. These are great opportunities to showcase your live set and meet potential booking agents! Usually musical springboards are organized in the form of local competitions, festivals, or supporting act slots for bigger artists. Springboards can help propel indie music into the mainstream by putting unsigned artists in the spotlight. Some major labels and talent managers keep an eye on these springboards on a regular basis to seek-out local bands that are making waves in the music scene. Festivals often run open calls as well, so it’s worth learning how to apply to music festivals on your own.

To apply to a musical springboard, you usually have to send your music in advance to a jury who will then narrow down top candidates to perform live. If you get chosen to participate in the finals, you can grow your fanbase and potentially meet agents and managers that could represent you. Springboards and competitions are often organized based on genre or region. Check out the top springboards you can apply to on Groover here.

6. Put together a press kit to send to each booking agent

A well-crafted press kit is an essential tool when approaching booking agents. Your press kit should include a professionally written biography, high-quality press photos, music samples, videos of your live performances, links to your social media platforms, and any press coverage you have received. If you’ve got a new album that just came out and is streaming well, for example, you can include this in your press kit! Some of the most successful independent musicians have learned how to master the music marketing side of things. Ensure that your press kit is organized and easy to follow- this will highlight your professionalism and can boost your chances of getting a booking agent.

7. Follow up and ask for advice

If you’ve emailed booking agents and haven’t gotten a response within a week or so, don’t be afraid to follow up. Booking agents are busy booking bands on their roster and can be overwhelmed with submissions of new artists wanting to work together. If you get a negative response, don’t be afraid to ask them for guidance or tips. Is there another booking agency they know of that may be more suited to your project? Maybe they can point you in the direction of a band manager to start. Being in the entertainment industry, booking agents are used to casting talent and can give you a somewhat objective view of where your project is at.

Conclusion: How to find the right booking agent for you

Overall, it can take time to find the right booking agent for you. The live entertainment industry is becoming more and more saturated and it can be tough for the independent artist to grow their professional entourage. With enough research and persistence, it is possible to sign with a booking agent and start headlining shows. Remember that the journey is not the same for everyone! For some, finding a booking agent may happen after signing a management contract first. For others, it may go hand in hand with a record deal. Artists have a lot to gain from putting themselves out there in any way they can. Did your jazz-band get hired as wedding entertainment? Or a friend wants you to play a corporate event? Any opportunity to play a gig is an opportunity to improve your live set and meet people. You never know who could be in the audience! To land more of those gigs in the meantime, you can get booked without an agent by reaching bookers directly.

The concert and event sector in the US is forecasted to reach a worth of US $399.88 billion by 2027, with some of the biggest players including Live Nation Worldwide Inc, Ticket City Inc, Bizzabo, Eventbrite, Ticket Falcon, and InEvent. The return of in-person events, music fests, and concerts is being embraced by an audience that has, in no small way, been ‘starved’ of musical entertainment for the past two years. The burgeoning health of the industry is making way for many jobs, both center-stage and backstage. If you want to find a job in the music industry, and if you think you have what it takes to land a job as a crew member for musical events, what steps will you need to take?

1. Honing Your Area of Interest

The number of jobs within the music events sector is wide, enabling you to match your specific interests, abilities, training, and experience with a wide array of potential jobs. If your strength lies in organization and management, then jobs that may appeal include concert promoter, tour manager, booking agent, tour coordinator, stage manager, festival director, and advance persons. The latter travel to each destination on a tour prior to the band and crew’s arrival to make sure that aspects such as accommodations, venues, and promotional material are all ready for the band’s arrival.

2. Ensuring Your CV Matches Up with Your Chosen Job

Landing a job as a promoter, manager, or booking agent will require specific training and experience. For instance, professional promoters usually have a degree in entertainment management, which teaches students how to apply business skills to promote various artistic and musical disciplines. If you want to increase your chances of working behind the scenes, then majoring in the business side of this undergraduate degree is ideal, since other specialties focus more on the history of visual arts and other subjects that may be less pertinent. This degree will enable you to access various roles, including those of tour manager, publicity manager, and artist manager (to name a few).

3. Honing Your Technical Knowledge

If you have strong computer skills and you think you might enjoy tasks such as curating musical performances, working in a recording studio, producing tracks for other artists, mixing music, recording audio at live events, video editing, or managing sound and video equipment during live events, then you will need to choose your specialist and invest in training early on. An audiovisual technician, for instance, has a major responsibility in concerts. They are responsible for choosing the right software, running audiovisual and signal testing ahead of events. They need to be knowledgeable on everything from when to use a dynamic microphone to adapting pop filters and wind shields to their equipment. Optimal frequency responses, sturdy construction, and pricing are just a few considerations they have to both prioritize and balance to keep projects on track. If you opt for a technical specialization, be prepared to continue your learning journey, since you will need to be updated on new audiovisual and livestream technologies as they arise.

4. Reading Job Descriptions

Before investing in a degree, diploma course, or similar, read job descriptions of various jobs related to musical events. It pays to know the different responsibilities and qualifications that each job will require. If you wish to be an event promoter, for instance, then you will need to be clued up on social media and SEO, to enable news about your event to reach as wide an audience as possible. Having experience in sales and marketing will also be handy, as will optimal public speaking skills. Reading a job description for the post of event promoter will make clear in an instant that to excel at this job, you need to be a “people person” with a wide network of connections you can draw upon to make your event a success. Of course, building a network takes time and so long as you have the training, interest, and personality suited to this job, there is no reason why you can’t work your way up to an impressive list of contacts.

The music events sector is enjoying great success and that means that there is a wide array of available jobs in the sector, From social media management to installation technician or audiovisual technician, there are a host of specialties to choose from. Because these specialisms often require deep business or technical knowledge, investing in education is required, as is taking the time to build a network that will stand you in good stead with every new musical project you are called upon to tackle.

—

Discover Groover ⬇️

As in any environment, as an artist, it is important to develop your network and to have a maximum of useful professional contacts. Having contacts in the music industry can facilitate a lot of things like, for example, the media coverage of your next release, the creation of your video or the organization of your next tour … If you are preparing for your next release, here is an article to keep in mind: 7 things to avoid in order to succeed in music

A diversified book of contacts is a very good asset in the music business, which works hand in hand with a professional network.

How not to feel alone with your music?

When you’re an independent artist, you can feel a bit alone with your art. It’s important that you find ways to share your music with others, whether it’s with your friends, other artists or professionals in the music industry.

We advise you to talk about your musical project with the people around you to build a loyal support. Your entourage supports you in your projects, shares your news, talks about it to their acquaintances, etc … It is a support system not to be neglected and constitutes a first fan base around your music.

It’s also a very good idea to exchange with other artists at different points of their career as soon as you have the opportunity. Don’t hesitate to join Facebook groups dedicated to artists, to participate in music workshops or trainings, … to meet a maximum of artists. These people can understand your situation, be interested in your releases and possibly, give you advice. It’s also an opportunity to find potential collaborators.

You may also feel the need to surround yourself professionally at some point in your career. At this point you can approach managers and labels when you feel you have enough experience to show them your potential. This can, for example, be characterized by a substantial press kit with references, press articles and stage experience.

On social networks: you can always try to send messages to pros through social media or via email and develop relationships with them! Many music industry pros are online and you can learn a little bit about them, understand their expectations, and better approach them when the time is right. LinkedIn works well for this, and our guide explains how to use LinkedIn as a musician to follow and contact pros before you pitch anything.

Concerts are also great places to network, whether at your own concerts or at other peoples’ events! Don’t hesitate to talk about your music to as many artists and professionals in the music industry as possible.

By uploading your music to Groover you will receive feedback within 7 days and you can start building professional relationships with the contacts who appreciate your music the most!

Who can give constructive feedback on my music?

It’s not only music industry professionals who can give you feedback. We advise you to build a panel of people around you who can give you feedback on your next release. You should ask as many people as possible who appreciate the music genre you are in and who are aware of the trends within the genre. You should also remind them to give constructive feedback by pointing out the positive points and the aspects to improve upon.

You can also ask for feedback from your subscribers by asking them to be as objective as possible. This feedback should be taken with a grain of salt because some of it can be either too brutal or too nice. However, you can potentially receive a significant amount of feedback. Plus, your fans will always be happy to be involved in your music making process. You can, for example, post a sample on Instagram and offer them to respond with constructive comments!

| Check out : Instagram for Musicians: How to gain new followers in 2021

But the best way is to professionals in the music industry directly. You can do this through Groover, where you’ll find all the contacts you need at every stage of your career. Each one can give you different feedback and opportunities:

Mentors are very useful to guide you and give you constructive feedback on your music but also to give you advice on your career. It is very useful to contact them if you are just starting out in music, if you are searching for your musical identity or if you are at a turning point in your career!

The media allow you to increase your visibility and your audience through different channels (radios, blogs, influencers on social networks, journalists for magazines, …). Their feedbacks are oriented towards the quality of your music, its potential, the adequacy with the media in question. This can help you to constantly improve your approach and target your interlocutors more precisely. Their feedback also gives you an insight into their point of view as a medium. Keep this in mind when soliciting media and promoting your music project on social networks.

Playlists are an essential asset to develop your presence on streaming platforms, which are becoming more and more important in the music landscape in recent years! Playlisters certainly have a different approach than traditional media and you’ll be able to see this with their feedback. The songs you send to media won’t necessarily be the same ones that will work best in a playlist.

The pros allow you to develop your entourage (labels, managers, editors, sync pros, …). Building your team is a step that can become essential for some artists at different levels of their musical career. These professionals usually appreciate receiving unreleased tracks and being able to bring their expertise to the table.

Groover allows you to get in touch with professionals and media. You are guaranteed to get written feedback on your track within a week and your tracks may potentially be shared, labels may want to meet with you, your track may enter rotation on a radio station, etc. With Groover, you get the email addresses of the pros who enjoyed your music and you can continue to interact with them and build those relationships. This way, you can develop your network as your campaigns progress and fill your professional book of contacts.

The booker, also called booking agent, is the person in charge of finding concerts for artists, and of organizing their shows. Looking for a booker who can fill your calendar with concert dates? Follow the advice of Baptiste, founder of the booking association Riche Idée.

1. Is your project ready ?

Every year, anywhere between 100 and 200 artists contact me on Groover to convince me to include them in the catalog of my modest concert house. Without even judging the quality of their musical proposals, I am sometimes surprised by requests sent by very very young projects with barely a few singles and a handful of concerts on the clock. Do not make the mistake of exposing your project to skeptical feedback when it has not yet reached a minimum of maturity. Give yourself time! As a general rule, I tend to advise artists not to approach agents until they have completed at least ten concerts, especially in their region of origin. The only notable exception: projects experiencing very rapid success (streaming, advertising, etc.) that want to turn it into live shows quickly, before the buzz subsides.

—

Get in touch with a booker on Groover ⬇️

—

2. Do you really need a booker ?

When determined and well organized, some artists manage to get signed and perform several dozen concerts per year without any outside help. If you are in this situation, do not neglect the possibility of continuing your musical journey independently without a booker. First is a matter of efficiency. When dealing with venue programmers (or bookers on Groover), a motivated artist will often be able to defend their project better than an overwhelmed booker. The other argument in favor of doing it yourself is obviously financial. In exchange for their canvassing work, a booker will collect income from each group concert, sometimes even when the opportunity does not arise due to their work. If you manage to bring your project to life on stage by yourself, it may be interesting to wait before approaching any agency. The objective? Wait for the proposal of a booker who can really get your project off the ground financially and artistically (tours, festivals, etc.).

👉 Check out : How to find concert dates? 5 tips for playing live!

3. Who is the right booker for my project ?

After sending email after email and making call after call, you are now convinced: your music project needs a booker in order to grow. However, it remains to be seen which one! Like the world of labels or concert halls, today, there is a wide range of potential stage partners for musical artists. Of course, many musicians dream of allying themselves with one of the major national or international agencies which represent the heads of the music business. Next to these ‘hot shot’ agents, there are also small associations (like Riche Idée) and independent agencies that support emerging artists to help them lock in their first tours. More established artists will also be able to approach bookers specializing in a musical style, a region or international export. Before starting all over the place, establish the necessary qualities of the ideal booker for your scenic development (size, ambition, catalog, etc.). You will save time and avoid always unpleasant refusals.

👉 Check out : Why and how to get constructive musical feedback?

4. How to get a booker’s attention ?

Like in love, booking is a question of feelings and emotion. Let’s be clear: it will prove to be nearly impossible to convince a professional in the music industry to represent you if they do not fully appreciate your musical universe. However, the art is not everything. You must also demonstrate to your future booker the seriousness and potential development of your project. This is particularly the case on Groover where professionals receive several requests per day. My advice: highlight your scenic assets. More than a clip or a long playlist, a booker will appreciate being able to view, from the first exchange, a live video of one or more titles of your project. Accompany this video with a short personalized message describing your live experience and ambitions. Keep in mind that a booker must reach a minimum of concert dates for his prospecting work to be profitable. The more the group seems ready, available and ready to tour, the more your proposal will hold their attention.

5. How to work well with your booker ?

Well done, you have finally found an agreement with the booker of your dreams! A great step in the right direction for the life of your musical project that you must now elevate. As an artist, you must understand the constraints and the expectations of your new playing partner. In other words: make it easier for them so that they can maximize the search for concert dates. Even if you are now “free” from seeking opportunities from venues, you must maintain an active role in the group’s agenda. This includes, for example, informing your booker of your calendar for the upcoming months to the best of your ability: when you are (un)available, discographic projects, media visibility, etc.

You should also be attentive to the opportunities targeted by your booker. Of course, it is not necessarily a question of saying yes to all the proposals submitted. Having said that, I tend to advise young artists not to be too demanding in the first weeks of collaboration.“It’s been too much travel”, “the room is too small”, “the fee is too low” … Comments like these can hurt your representative’s motivation. If you want to develop your project, you should, rather quickly, lock down the concert dates and shows. This will be an excellent sign for both the music industry (media, festivals, venues …) and to your booker.

6. To sum up

The more you perform, the easier it will be for a booker to obtain new dates, the more your project will be exposed, the faster you will progress in the musical landscape … There is no shortage of recent examples of groups and artists who have benefited from this virtuous circle. Now, it’s your turn !
