Though Apple Music is the second most used streaming service available, some of its features and innerworkings remain a mystery. It is a far less community-driven platform than Spotify, making it more difficult to promote your music on. It does have curated playlists, but they work differently than Spotify. Here’s what we mean:
Submitting to Playlists
Spotify and Apple Music differ greatly; besides not displaying stream count and lacking many interactive features on the front end, behind the scenes, Apple Music also does not allow artists to pitch their music for playlist features.
Apple Music’s playlists are made by their in-house team of curators, which do not accept submissions. They instead make their selections based off of an artist’s engagement trends on the platform and other factors unbeknownst to the public. Given that pitching isn’t possible, artists must go a different route to get a playlist add.
Steps to Get a Playlist Feature on Apple Music
1. Claim Your Apple Music Artist Profile
Go to Apple Music for Artists to claim and verify your profile. This will tell the service that you’re an active member of the platform as an artist and value your presence there.
2. Go Through a Distributor
It is wise to try connecting with people in the industry who know someone at Apple – perhaps they can put in a good word for you. It’s clear that without submissions, the curators must either base their decisions off of data, word of mouth, or their own network. Your digital distributor may have a pitching service that allows you to try your luck via personal connection.
3. Build Out Your Network
Again, all it takes is one person who knows someone working at Apple Music to help get your name on their desk. Work on your personal network and make an effort to meet people in the industry, and tell them about your recent work.
4. Build Out Your Community
If the editorial team is using data, you should too. Direct social media followers to your Apple Music page by sharing links to your music on social media and encourage them to listen. Some artists accidentally neglect their Apple Music-listening fans by only posting streaming links to Spotify, so make sure to provide links to everything. The algorithm will take notice of increased traffic on your page and potentially get the attention of a curator or two.
