In this exclusive interview, we dive into the story behind Lobello Records’ unique approach to music, R W Smith’s creative process, and how Groover helped bring their paths together. From sunlit porches to the Italian coastline, this is a tale of music, memories, and meaningful partnerships.
Hey Lobello Records! We just heard some great news—can you tell us more about it?
It happened here on groover. We met with an incredible songwriter The RW Smith from the States and we are organizing a mini tour here in south east Italy.
And tell us a bit about yourselves! How do you support artists? What types of projects do you like to support? What’s your relationship like with your artists? Do you work on a lot of projects?
We are a label made of musicians. We are much more a network than a traditional label. Our office is in the countryside by the sea. We love the ocean and the good vibrations. Since 2009 we have supported different projects with different styles. Being musicians that have started in the 90s we like a lot independent musicians and a diy spirit.
We like to work with people that you would hang out with. If you don’t enjoy drinking a beer with your artists there is something wrong. We are humans and artists and we must stay this first to work in the music field.
We work on several projects in music including scoring, tours, producing, parties (a lot) and vintage or fantasy events. We are 50% freaks and 50% nerds.

Hey R W Smith! Now, your turn—can you tell us more about yourself, your music, and how your project was born?
I grew up in Katy, Texas, surrounded by all kinds of music. While I didn’t play music when I was younger, I was always deeply connected to it—feeling the emotions it stirred in me. The twang in my voice comes from my Texan roots, but it wasn’t until I moved to New York City at 19 that a whole new world opened up for me. That’s when my need to express myself through music truly began. I started learning guitar, diving into the old folk and country musicians I’d always loved, like Elizabeth Cotton, Etta Baker, and Mississippi John Hurt. But the album that really changed my life was Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska. It’s the one that solidified my love for fingerpicking, and I’ve carried that style with me ever since. For me, a little fingerpicking and a lot of truth is what makes music real and meaningful.
My music is the kind of sound you get when you’re sitting on the porch, watching the sun go down—simple, reflective, and real. In a world where so much music feels overproduced, I’m drawn to the ‘less is more’ approach. It’s the rawness, the authenticity that speaks to me. If you’ve ever seen Justin Townes Earle perform solo, you’ll know the feeling I’m talking about—that stripped-down, heartfelt connection with the audience. That’s the vibe I strive for with The RW Smith. I hope my new EP, Younger Then, gives listeners a taste of that honesty and simplicity.
The Younger Then EP reflects where I am in my life right now. Living in Mannheim, Germany, has definitely influenced my music, bringing out a more nostalgic vibe, shaped by being immersed in a different culture. I often find myself caught in reflections of the past, and that’s what I write about—moments, feelings, and memories that feel distant yet still close to my heart. The project is a mix of where I’ve been and where I am now, shaped by this new chapter of life.
What’s a day in the life of R W Smith like? What inspires you and fuels your creativity? Do you have any little routines before diving into your work?
A day in the life of The RW Smith starts with waking up and reviewing my journal to set intentions for the day. I begin with a cup of tea, then grab my journal and let my thoughts flow onto the page—no judgment, just writing whatever comes to mind. After that, I head to my guitar, practicing chords, melodies, or fingerpicking ideas. Only once I’ve finished my guitar session do I go back and see what I wrote earlier. I find that this routine helps me stay free and open. Sometimes, something great comes from it; sometimes, not. But what’s important is that I let myself create without overthinking or judging—at least that’s how I stay true to my process.
I find that inspiration often comes from just living life and staying open to the world around me. Some of the ways I tap into creativity include:
- Listening to Music: I play songs that inspire me or match the vibe I’m aiming for.
- Reading or Watching Something Creative: Whether it’s a book, poetry, or even a film, the right words or scenes can spark fresh ideas.
- Spending Time in Nature: A simple walk outdoors can reset my mind and fuel new perspectives.
Creativity is all about staying in tune with life and the moments that surround us.
What made you want to work together? How did you first meet? What are your plans for the coming year?
I sent my music to Lobello Records through Groover, and I was thrilled not only to receive a response but to get such a thoughtful and encouraging message about my work. They suggested we have a call, and after speaking with Tobias, I immediately felt a strong connection. We share similar tastes in music, and it was clear that we’re on the same page. I’m excited to see where this collaboration takes us!
When Lobello Records suggested I come to Italy to do some shows, I didn’t hesitate for a second—I was all in! From December 4th to December 9th, I’ll be heading to Lecce, Italy, for a mini-tour, and I couldn’t be more excited. This opportunity means so much to me, and it’s a testament to the trust and collaboration between Lobello Records and myself. They believe in me as much as I believe in them, and I’m confident this partnership is the beginning of something incredible for our musical future. Here’s to making memories and music in Italy!
Looking ahead to 2025, my focus is all about growth and connection. I’m planning to release a new EP and perform live as much as possible. There’s nothing like the energy of a live audience, and I’m hungry to be on stage, sharing my music and growing as an artist. I’d love the opportunity to open for other musicians, expanding my reach and learning from the experience. I’m also excited to continue collaborating with Lobello Records and see where this journey takes me. The future feels full of possibility, and I can’t wait to dive in.

What advice would you both give to artists just starting their musical projects?
Lobello: You must enjoy what you are doing. Even if songwriting could be a process that brings you through emotions and sometimes pain. Even if there’s a tear and not a smile after you have played a song you must be satisfied.
The R.W. Smith: If there’s one thing I’d share with anyone passionate about music, it’s this: just start. Stop hesitating, stop worrying about the ‘what ifs,’ and dive into creating. The beauty of music is that it reflects who you are in the moment—raw, real, and evolving. Every day, do something, no matter how small, that brings you closer to your dreams. And remember, music is deeply personal and subjective. The most important thing is to love what you create. If it moves you, it will move others. Let go of the fear of judgment and let your art speak for itself.
R W Smith what’s the most important lesson you’ve learned since launching yours?
Working on my new EP, Younger Then, was a journey of discovery. I’ve learned that making bold decisions is at the heart of creating music that feels authentic. Not everyone will understand those choices, and that’s part of the beauty of art—it’s personal. While I’m proud of what I’ve created, I’ve realized that being unsatisfied isn’t a bad thing; it’s the fuel that pushes us to grow and evolve as artists. In the end, it’s about making music you believe in, standing by those decisions, and embracing the endless pursuit of better.
And finally, would you both recommend Groover to your friends, and why?
Lobello: Groover is fun. You meet nice and talented artists. You meet also people looking for an advice and I think that even for curator every listening is something that enrich your day.
The R W Smith: Yes, I would definitely recommend Groover to my friends, especially for music creators. It’s a fantastic platform for getting your music in front of industry professionals who truly care about discovering new talent. The ability to directly connect with curators, labels, and music platforms gives you valuable feedback and potential opportunities that might not come from traditional submission methods. It’s a great way to build relationships and get noticed in the music world.
