As an artist, your goal when releasing music is to be heard by as many listeners as possible. But hundreds of thousands of songs are published every day on streaming platforms and competition is tough. So to help you gain visibility and new fans, what better than social networks? Today we’re going to focus on ways to increase engagement on your Instagram account – the main social network for working on your image, positioning, promoting your music and growing your community as an artist.

In the realm of digital marketing, increasing engagement on Instagram is one of the most crucial tactics for enhancing brand visibility and interaction. Studies have shown that social media marketing significantly enhances brand awareness – and you are a brand! Knowing this, it would be pointless to attempt to make your promote your music without using the powerful tool that is social networks. If used properly, social media platforms are a real meeting point between artists/bands and their audiences.

Using social media strategically, especially Instagram, for promotional purposes is not that difficult. Whatever your reason for visiting this article – fear of messing up the social media game, lack of inspiration, desire to increase your following, etc. – the Groover team is here to guide you.

Looking to promote your music? Send it to curators and industry pros ⬇️

Here are some tips and tricks to help you improve your engagement rate on Instagram!

1. Consistency: the key to increasing engagement on Instagram

For algorithmic purposes, it is extremely important that you are active on social media and post regularly. Developing a backlog of posts is a great way to keep your Instagram active, and therefore engaged. By doing this, you allow your followers to witness the evolution of your music, as well as your persona as an artist. Showing them behind the scenes, rehearsals, recordings, releases, concerts and more will build a strong and fanbase that feels close to you. On the algorithm side, Instagram favors accounts that come back to the app often, spend time on it, and are the reason others spend time on the app as well. This translates to: 1) post often, 2) scroll/engage with those you follow, and 3) make your posts worth talking about, saving, and visiting again and again. The algorithm will reward you for it!

Start posting more on your Instagram account and sharing more with your followers right away, even if you don’t have a back log yet. For example, you can:

Show behind-the-scenes footage of studio sessions and video shoots

Publish videos of rehearsals

Teaser your upcoming releases

Do lives with other artists or partners

Ask questions to your followers in stories

Show your everyday life, have fun, share things that inspire you, etc.

Share user-created content from your followers to build a sense of community and encourage more engagement

2. Give priority to video posts

With the arrival and popularity of other video-focused social networks, notably TikTok, Instagram has had to adapt to keep up. In fact, a study conducted by HubSpot found that Instagram videos can drive up to twice as much engagement as photos. If you want to improve your engagement on Instagram, one of the best ways is to focus on Reels.

Instagram Reels are a powerful tool for increasing engagement and visibility on the platform. It’s very common for Reels to fall into Instagram’s “explore” tab, allowing more users to find your video and, as a result, discover your music. This is because Instagram wants to keep the platform dynamic, so the more video content you give them to push to current and new followers, the better. You can also post longer videos, but beware, the longer the duration, the lower the engagement.

Carousel posts (aka slide posts) consist of multiple images or videos and are highly effective in boosting engagement as they provide more opportunities for likes, comments, and shares within a single post. Recently, Instagram rolled out a new feature allowing users to post 20 photos in a carousel as opposed to the previous 10. The more the merrier!

Use Your Own Music in Your Reels

Reels allow you to add music to your video, which is a great way to promote your music as an artist. Whether your video is about your music career or not, throw in a catchy snippet of one of your songs in the background – you never know what might do well and bring more eyes and ears to your work!

Instagram just announced a new feature regarding Reels’ music as well. Instead of only being able to use one sound per video (and thus getting stuck with a certain clip length, or not being able to edit the audio at will), you can now use up to 20 tracks in a Reel. Get creative with this feature! If you’ve just released a project, you can do a big edit of BTS, rehearsals, music video footage and more, and create a mix of your songs in the background so users can hear a bit of everything. It’s certainly worth a try!

3. Post Instagram stories regularly

One of the main ways to increase engagement on Instagram is to post stories. An inactive Instagram doesn’t get any interaction, and therefore has a low engagement rate.

Utilizing Instagram Stories with interactive elements like links, polls, questions, relevant hashtags you can hide off-screen, and stickers can significantly enhance audience interaction, get feedback, and showcase your personality in a casual format, helping to strengthen community connection. It is extremely important to create links to your music and establish a strong relationship with your fans. Include a “call to action” in your posts to direct followers to a streaming page or post. The closer you stay to your audience, the more likely they are to engage and interact with your work.

There are several ways to interact with stories: quick reactions with emojis, written replies, likes, and recently, comments. Of course, the more interaction your followers have with your content, the more Instagram understands the relevance of your take, and the greater the reach and spread of your posts.

It’s much easier and faster for someone to react to one of your stories than to comment on a static post in their feed. So if you don’t use stories, there’s a good chance your Instagram account’s reach may not be as good.

4. Create relevant content

A good Instagram thrives on good content! Therefore, a great tip for maintaining good engagement on Instagram is to focus on creating content that is relevant and useful to your audience: what we call content creation marketing. If you want your audience to interact, you need to work on the topic of reciprocity. Be relevant to your followers and they will reciprocate by increasing engagement on your Instagram account! You can be niche with certain things, but remember that you want to keep as many people interested in your posts as possible.

Keep in mind that you need to give people a reason to follow you and your work. So avoid making your Instagram account a place just for promoting your music project. Really connect with your followers by showing your real life, giving advice, showing your mistakes and successes, sharing your thoughts with your fans! Try to understand what your demographic is following you for and give them more of it.

5. Always reply to your followers

Artists, answer your followers!

Comments are one of the main engagement metrics Instagram takes into account. The more comments you have on your posts the more Instagram understands that it is generating traffic, and the more it pushes it to other users. Comments are also a great way for you to interact with your followers, and a way to measure the impact of your content.

Initially, right after publishing your content, Instagram will broadcast the post to only 20% of your follower base. As your followers interact, Instagram will understand the relevance of your post and spread your post more widely.

So: reply to your followers as soon as you can! Instagram’s algorithm can’t differentiate whether it’s another account commenting or you. Interacting with your followers helps drive engagement as you’ll double the number of comments. Replying to followers can also lead to more Instagram engagement by encouraging further interaction – people will want to be a part of the conversation.

When you pay attention to your audience and show that you are responsive to feedback and comments, you help build a loyal following. And a fan who is a fan always engages!

6. Explore all the tools on Instagram

If Instagram launches a new tool, use it! This goes for all the tools available on this social network. Always explore what Instagram has to offer, as any new feature is à priori there to add and contribute to the spread and reach of your posts.

Regularly checking Instagram analytics is crucial for tracking engagement metrics and optimizing your posting strategies. By understanding the best times to post and audience preferences, you can refine your content strategies and adapt to changes in Instagram’s algorithm.

Some classic features worth exploring:

Hashtags

As the name suggests, the hashtag is used to tag your Instagram content. Try to use strategic hashtags for each of your posts. When you use hashtags, you increase the chances that people who don’t yet follow you will discover your post through Instagram’s search engine.

Location

The same goes for the use of location. Where are you from? Where did the content in your post take place? The use of location is also an important search engine. In the same way, people who don’t follow you yet can find you through proximity and search for that same location.

Mentions

This tip almost no one puts it into practice… Mentioning other Instagram accounts allows your posts to stay in their “mentions tabs.” Therefore, it increases your chances of being found when someone views the mentions of the person you tagged. If you tag the official Instagram account of a festival you’re playing at in your photo/video, for example, it’s likely that some people will see your post and discover your Instagram account, and therefore your music project.

7. Beware of behavior that could be considered “spam” by Instagram

Be careful about this so as not to compromise your engagement on Instagram in any way.

Some actions are considered spam by Instagram because they are similar to bots – or robots. Some Instagram accounts end up being blocked and, as a result, have their engagement damaged. Avoid repetitive actions on Instagram, such as the well-known follow/unfollow technique. Also, avoid commenting too many times in a row on the same post.

Instagram does not allow automation on its platform, that is, people who use hacks (Instagram Bots) to automate actions to gain followers, loss of followers and fake interactions. Very quickly, when you perform some of these actions repeatedly, the algorithm can end up getting confused and believe that these actions can be due to the use of bots, which is considered a violation of the Instagram rules.

8. Don’t buy Instagram followers and avoid engagement groups

Unfortunately, many independent artists in the early stages of their careers make the mistake of buying followers and end up permanently and irreversibly compromising their Instagram account. If this happens, the only solution is to create a new Instagram account.

Conclusion: NEVER buy followers on Instagram!

You will manage to build your fanbase over time, don’t try to stall foolishly. And from a personal point of view, this will not help you grow. On the contrary, buying followers is a violation of Instagram’s rules and, if discovered by the algorithm, the consequence is the infamous shadow ban.

In practical terms, this means that your posts will no longer be shown to your followers. The algorithm will slow down – even cancel – the distribution of your posts, thus reducing the reach of your Instagram posts and stories, which will lead to a sharp drop in engagement. Also, if you have a lot of followers and the engagement doesn’t match that number, people may realize that you’ve resorted to buying fake followers, and the same goes for buying likes and comments – which will significantly damage the image of your music project.

Another action that can hurt your Instagram account’s engagement is to create or join engagement groups – that is, groups created on WhatsApp or Facebook to exchange likes, comments, etc. This technique only hinders Instagram’s algorithm since it no longer understands who you’re targeting with your content. It can no longer trace the profile and interests of your followers and target audience because they are too different. People who would have naturally consumed your content will no longer be reached.

Growing your Instagram followers with people who aren’t interested in your content is pointless – and may even penalize you – because engagement will decrease over time.

9. Focus on important Instagram metrics

We’ve prepared a digest of the metrics that particularly matter to improve the engagement of your posts on Instagram.

Tracking these metrics is crucial for boosting engagement on Instagram. In order of relevance, the most important measures on the platform are:

saves

shares

comments

likes

Likes, comments, shares, and saves contribute to the overall growth and engagement on your Instagram account.

These are the types of engagement and clicks you should look for, and that will allow you to analyze the performance of your content.

Note that there is no point in getting stuck on the number of likes or followers! These are known as vanity metrics – they do not influence engagement. Some profiles with 4000 followers have more engaged and loyal fans than many profiles with 10K+ followers.

How to Calculate Your Instagram Engagement Rate

Calculating your Instagram engagement rate is straightforward. Use the formula: (Total interactions/ Impressions) x 100. Total interactions include likes, comments, saves, shares, and story replies. Impressions refer to the number of times your content is viewed. You can use Instagram’s built-in analytics tool or third-party apps to track these engagement metrics. By regularly monitoring your engagement rate, you can gain insights into what type of content resonates most with your audience and adjust your marketing strategy accordingly.

10. Be part of your fans’ Instagram “Favorites”!

Instagram users are able to choose between 3 different feeds: home feed, favorites, and followers. This means that if your profile is chosen as a favorite by your followers, your posts will be prioritized.

Instagram will then understand that your followers are following you closely and are interested in the content you post. Naturally the engagement rate on your Instagram account will increase since your posts will be seen first.

So work on your relationship with your fans! Interact, create relevant content, take care of your followers. You can only win! Remember: focus on the quality of your posts to create engagement on your Instagram account.

In addition, while building a strong fanbase through social networks, don’t forget to use Groover to promote your singles: Groover allows you to connect with music industry professionals, labels, playlists, bloggers, and much more!

Did you know that many grants and aids are available to independent and developing artists. However, faced with the fear of administrative paperwork, it is often difficult to get started. Here are 5 tips that will help you organize your research and multiply your chances of obtaining these grants.

1. Know were grants come from

Understanding how the ecosystem of grants related to the current music industry works not only allows you to target the logic of grant allocations, but also to better build your argument. It is therefore necessary to have an overview of the different sectors and the funding organizations.

The two main categories of funders are:

The public authorities

Separated between the State (via the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Culture) and the local authorities, this public aid has its own logic and specific criteria. It goes without saying that in order to be eligible, the activity of your musical project must be domiciled in the territory corresponding to the field of action of the funding organizations.

The professional sector

The other category concerns the professional organizations that maintain aid programs for musical actors and projects: ADAMI, CNC, CNV, FCM, MFA, SACD, Bureau Export, SCPP, SPPF and SPEDIDAM. In the perspective of collecting to redistribute and according to a virtuous circle principle, the money generated by these programs (from the rights generated by producers, artists and authors, ticketing tax, etc…) is intended to feed these aid programs for musical creation and distribution.

2. Finding the right funding program for you

Before undertaking any grant application process for your musical project, it is imperative that you :

Assess the demand

Know what you are applying to

Take into account the deadline for each application

This means that you need to explore each funding scheme in depth and target those that best correspond to the needs and ambitions of your musical project. Don’t hesitate to contact the funding organizations directly and check out their websites.

3. Adopt a coherent strategy to ensure an optimal result

It is a matter of finding the right balance. On the one hand, don’t be too ambitious. On the other hand, don’t think about these grants as the necessary cornerstone for the success of your musical project.

By definition, the role of a grant in music is to support and flesh out the realization of a musical project. In short, to allow it to evolve in the best conditions. This is best done by following tip #2, finding the right grant(s) for your musical project. It is preferable to leave aside the financial aid that can potentially be granted and to concentrate on a limited number of aid schemes directly linked to your profile as an artist and to your needs. An ambitious musical project with a substantial budget will not necessarily be more advantageous, and will not have more chances of being selected than a more modest project. It is therefore necessary to build a rational and concrete financing plan.

Knowledge of the nuts and bolts of administrative writing is a plus. Be exhaustive, but also try to be clear and concise in what you say. Be careful with your arguments and notes of intent and avoid long sentences that can potentially be misinterpreted. In the interest of credibility, try to be honest because most funding agencies are public and have very strong subsidiaries and networks. In case of fraudulent and/or dishonest attempt, you risk being registered and losing any possibility of receiving financial aid for your musical project in the future!

4. Follow up promptly on your requests for subsidies

Once the grant applications have been completed and sent, the process does not stop there. To maximize your chances of receiving a positive response and finally obtaining financial assistance to develop your musical project, it is imperative to follow the status of the process carefully, to be reactive and to respond expressly to each request for additional information from the funding agencies.

5. Be patient and courageous

There is no magic formula for success. Applying for a grant for your music is often a daunting task and requires a scrupulous respect of administrative obligations. It can take several weeks or even months – depending on the amount of paperwork involved – to put together an application that is eligible for grants. The details are scrutinized and the omission of an annexed document can potentially delay or even cancel your application. Having someone else review your application to get a broader view of your needs is also worth considering.

And if you are turned down, don’t get discouraged and try to build on the experience. Even if the granting agencies do not communicate much about decisions, do not hesitate to contact them directly for a detailed report. Accept failure as a step towards success. In the meantime, it is still possible for you to get noticed by using the Groover platform to gain confidence, visibility and maybe land the deal of your dreams!

Celebrating victories, big or small, is as important as planning them. Yes, releasing a musical project is giving birth to a work of art! It’s months of hard work, debates with your team and fights with yourself, touch-ups, unexpected events, surprises, planning and strategizing your communication on social networks… So when you offer it to the public, you have to close this cycle, celebrate and promote the release of your musical project. It doesn’t matter if you are a party person or not: there is always a way to mark the occasion. And besides, you’re lucky enough to be in a business where celebrating is working…

Do you see where I’m going with this? To promote the release of your musical project (EP, album, mixtape) in an efficient way, you absolutely have to organize an event! Psychologically, it’s important for you, but moreover, it’s an opportunity to gather people around your music and to create excitement among them. This way, you ensure a success in terms of your reputation: word of mouth, meeting professionals, visibility…

I’m Theodore, editor in chief of NewTone media, I accompany artists in their development and you can also use Groover to contact me. Based on personal experiences and examples I have lived, I will give you 3 techniques to celebrate and promote the release of your musical project.

1. The release party

Celebrating the release of a mainstream or pop musical project: a big feature

The release party to celebrate the release of a musical project is the most obvious. Some artists, like SCH for his album Rooftop or Jok’Air for Jok’Travolta, even go as far as to mediatize their release party. Events, VIP guests, 3 star catering, butlers, decoration… When the label has the means, it can go very far. So far that it may seem inaccessible to you, as an independent artist. However, if you think about it, this staging fulfills very basic objectives. It’s about inviting media and industry professionals to join, support and promote the release of your musical project. They will leave with memories that they will recount, privately in their lives or publicly in their media’s forums, that will make the image of the celebrated artist.

Celebrating the release of an indie music project: what a bonus!

Adapted to your scale, the objective is to reinforce the link with your community and to encourage the media to promote the release of your musical project. And this is within your reach! For an artist who would have 1000 followers on Instagram, there are 30 to 50 who will be ready to come to your release party. That alone, is 30 to 50 stories in which you will be mentioned during the evening, creating visibility on your Instagram account. Even better: the next day, at work, in class or at the local bar, these people will tell others about the evening they shared with you. Their friends’ first instinct? Subscribe to you on Instagram or Spotify. Digital communication techniques are effective when they are mastered, but nothing replaces spoken word, the face-to-face communication, the spontaneity and effectively of word-of-mouth.

At this release party, it’s important that you invite a few pros. With a bit of luck, you have journalists in your network, or people who work in recording studios, concert halls, bars, for festivals, etc. So use your contacts to get them to come! Who knows, maybe this is a chance for them to really discover your music and offer you an opportunity? If you think you know anyone who is involved in music, then find people who are approachable and might be interested in this type of event and music! Journalists and founders of niche media, emerging beatmakers or engineers, young managers or music industry students… After an evening of listening to your musical project and witnessing the excitement of your community, chances are they will want to work with you! And then, you’ll make those months spent in the studio worthwhile.

💡 Contact the best pros in the music industry on Groover and invite them to your release party!

Groover is a platform that allows you to contact playlists, media, radios, labels and professionals of the music industry, listening and feedback guaranteed

Celebrating the release of an independent musical project: how do you do it?

You’re probably wondering how you’re going to organize this? It’s simple, and not necessarily expensive. Go to your favorite bar, or one that you think is suitable. Often, you can privatize the room for a fee. This is an option if you have a little budget and it will be more profitable than Google Ads. But be smart: choose a weekday and find a bar that doesn’t have too much traffic… That way, you’ll be in a good position to negotiate: you’ll bring in 30 to 40 people who will consume on a night where the bar would have few customers! All you need to ask of them is to choose the music that plays that night and the right to make a speech thanking everyone and presenting your musical project. Besides, why privatize? Let the by-standers be attracted by the crowd and come to discover your music by chance!

I’ve accidentally been to many parties like these and almost all the time, they convinced me to talk about the artist and their musical release on NewTone media, which I manage.

Does this seem attainable to you now? I hope so, but if this type of event isn’t for you, don’t worry! There are other techniques.

2. Listening party in the studio with industry pros

Have people discover your music in the best way possible

The best way to discover an album is to listen to it in the studio. Quality speakers, a very musical atmosphere, a tension in the room with each sound. And above all, the best conditions to listen to an album: from the first to the last track, without interruption, without doing the dishes, without the smell of the subway, without reading your emails at the same time.

The objective is similar to the one sought with the release party: invite professionals and members of your community to provoke a strong connection to your project. Obviously, a studio is smaller: you will have to make a precise selection of guests. For the pros, be relevant in your invitations: propose the listening session to media and labels that work on music really similar to yours. For your community you can, for example, make a contest to win 2 tickets. Trust me, your listeners will thank you.

In terms of organization, nothing could be easier. Either you already have your habits in a studio which can be appropriate for a listening party or you are in a home studio and you will have to rent a studio. For a 2 hour session, it will cost you between 50 and 150 euros depending on the studio you choose. Plan some drinks and snacks to make your guests feel good! Once the studio is booked, see how to host a listening party step by step, from setting the mood to capturing content for your promo.

Personally, I tend to prefer this setup than the release party. It is more intimate and you are closer to the music. You can really discuss with the artist, in depth about their musical project, ask them specific questions and get answers. It’s useful to organize a media relay afterwards. On the other hand, you can bring fewer people… It’s up to you if you want to create deep links or if you want to celebrate!

Some artists even go as far as doing their listening session live on networks like Instagram, YouTube or Twitch. This is what Damso had done by inviting Konbini to relay the event. This interesting and efficient device brings me to the 3rd technique!

3. A first listen with influencers

Use an influencer to promote the release of your musical project

This technique is to make an event on social networks to communicate on the release of your musical project in collaboration with an influencer. Attention: when I say “influencer”, I’m really talking about anyone who has a little more influence than you. This person can very well be an artist featured on your musical project, and whose community is slightly more developed than yours. Whatever the scale, the idea is to be visible by your guest’s community, in order to convince them to listen to your musical project and to follow you on social media.

The advantage of this technique is that you can do it without leaving your home! You can even combine it with one of the previous techniques. For example, you can invite an influencer to your release party and ask them to do a live recording on their Instagram account at the time of the listening! With the internet, the possibilities are endless.

Choose the right influencer to promote the release of your musical project

So don’t close any doors. Scour YouTube and Instagram for influencers who talk about rap if you rap, rock if you rock. Invite someone whose community is really likely to like your work! Obviously, on a small scale, don’t aim at Squeezie, Gota or Inox… Start slowly and tell yourself that an influencer with 5K or 10K is already excellent if you have 10 times less! Also, don’t make the mistake of thinking that it’s unattainable. Influencers are entertainers: it’s not uncommon for them to love the music business. Maybe they will be delighted by your invitation and you will start a long-lasting relationship! Finally, don’t forget that their influence is also their work tool: there is nothing shocking to pay for their performance or attendance. Just be careful to work with someone serious who hasn’t bought their subscribers and who will bring a real added value to your event.

A live : how do you manage it?

What to do when you are going live ? It’s simple: each person has their role! You are the artist: you play each track and you can introduce them to explain how you created them, talk about your inspirations or give the theme of the text. They are the entertainer: they will have to react to each sound, make jokes, ask questions, give an opinion… Believe me, you will quickly reach one hour of live performance, even for a 25 minutes EP!

Recently, I saw an artist going live on Twitch where they were listening to their project and commenting on it, while playing their favorite video game. This platform is perfectly suited to promote the release of your music project! Moreover, it arouses curiosity and brings back the gaming community who is passionate about this game: all good things!

Honestly, it’s not my favorite method because I’m more into physical meetings and in-person interaction. That said, the social impact of this kind of event is much more important and allows you to get closer to your community. If you’re good at streaming, don’t hesitate for a second!

Conclusion

The main lesson is that every musical project is a milestone in your career. It should be celebrated, but also used as an opportunity to meet people and strengthen the bonds with your audience. It would be a shame to miss this opportunity to connect with people, beyond Instagram posts announcing the release of your project. By implementing one of these three techniques at a lower cost, you ensure the evolution of your career and the profitability of your music project! Moreover, it’s the best way to understand how your music makes people feel and which songs are the most effective. Indeed, they are in front of you and you can see their reactions live!

So for your next project, I’m waiting for your invitation!
