Music has a way of bringing different worlds together. For Joannie Labelle, rhythm is a language that connects her love of percussion, intimate songwriting and electronic textures. For Danny Wheeler, better known as WheelUP, it is the foundation of a sound rooted in broken beat, jazz, soul, house and the musical influences of the African diaspora.

Their paths crossed thanks to Ivan Halen-Semeria, WheelUP’s manager and a curator on Groover, who discovered Joannie’s music on the platform and recognised the potential for something special. After hearing her distinctive voice, WheelUP reached out with a selection of unreleased productions. Joannie responded with vocal ideas that immediately sparked a creative connection.

The result? New collaborative tracks in development for WheelUP’s upcoming album, demonstrating how a digital platform can lead to genuine artistic relationships and music that might never have existed otherwise.

We spoke to both artists about their musical identities, the power of collaboration, their experience with Groover and what comes next.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Joannie Labelle:
I’m Joannie Labelle, a singer, percussionist, songwriter, producer, explorer of rhythm, and nature lover.

Rhythm and melodies have always felt like home to me. I grew up in Canada in a family where music was highly valued. We danced to it, sang it, played it. It was everywhere and important.

Over the years, my journey has taken me across different countries, musical cultures and collaborations that have shaped the way I create. Every experience leaves a little imprint on my music. In a way, it’s a form of journaling for me.

I’m endlessly curious. What happens if a Cuban rhythm meets electronic textures? What if my voice stays soft on a bold track? That’s usually where my fun begins.

WheelUP:
I’m Danny Wheeler, also known as WheelUP. I’m a Zimbabwean-British producer, DJ and artist based in West London. I’ve been involved in underground music for many years, originally releasing drum & bass as Danny Wheeler before creating WheelUP as a home for my love of broken beat, bruk, jazz, soul, house, UK funky, UKG and Afro-influenced rhythms.

My music has been released through Tru Thoughts, Laurent Garnier’s COD3 QR, Liquid V and other independent labels. I’ve also performed at festivals and venues including Worldwide Festival, Glastonbury, We Out Here, Love Supreme, Tate Modern and Jazz Café.

Can you tell us about your musical project?

Joannie Labelle:
My project, my songs, are rooted in rhythm, but they reach for emotions, feelings and dreams. I blend percussion with intimate songwriting and electronic production.

I love instinctive writing. That’s how I start my lyrics and melodies most of the time. Every release is another little piece of my story, trying to reach out to other individuals like me.

WheelUP:
WheelUP represents the “West London Sound” genre and the musical culture that shaped me. The project connects broken beat with jazz, soul, house, hip-hop, funk and sounds from across the African diaspora.

Collaboration is a major part of the project. I enjoy bringing together different vocalists, musicians and producers and seeing what happens when our musical worlds meet. Connecting through music is a big thing for me.

How would you describe your music, and what are the best conditions for discovering it?

Joannie Labelle:
I’d say my music is rhythmic, dreamy, organic, electronic… human. Sometimes polished, sometimes chaotic.

The best way to discover it is probably to sit down comfortably with something pleasing to drink. Then start listening to my album or EP from beginning to end, because I really take the time to feel and imagine a journey for the listener. I try to create a travelling experience through music. But you should have some space around you to make a few dance moves here and there!

WheelUP:
The music is rhythm, soul and feeling. For me, it’s all about positive vibrations through music and sharing that energy. I’m influenced by UK club music, but I have an international mindset: world music meets UK club culture.

A powerful sound system and an open-minded dancefloor are probably the perfect conditions for me.

How did you discover Groover, and what convinced you to use the platform?

Joannie Labelle:
I remember looking for ways to promote my music as an independent artist. I’m so glad I found Groover. What attracted me was how direct the process is. Instead of wondering if my music disappears into the internet forever, I know I’m actually reaching people who are genuinely listening.

I was really pleased to find curators there who truly supported me and my releases.

WheelUP:
My connection to Groover came through my manager, Ivan Halen-Semeria, who is a curator on the platform. Ivan is a wonderful person and, as well as managing me, he’s the co-owner of Worldwide Festival with Gilles Peterson.

Ivan discovered Joannie’s music through Groover, heard something distinctive in her voice and musical personality, and felt that our worlds could work together.

He then introduced us directly. I listened to Joannie’s music, immediately heard the potential and sent her a selection of my unreleased productions.

What opportunities have you had through Groover?

Joannie Labelle:
Groover has helped me connect with many playlist curators and diverse music professionals.

Among other opportunities, I’ve been added to a playlist that skyrocketed my song “On prend le thé.”

More recently, I got in touch with Ivan Halen-Semeria from Worldwide Festival, who manages DJ WheelUP. Ivan has been really generous in connecting us. I was very pleased when WheelUP asked me to record some vocals for him. I really liked the tracks.

Now the songs will be released on Tru Thoughts Recordings, a truly surprising turn of events. That’s really amazing!

WheelUP:
The most important opportunity was an authentic artistic connection rather than simply receiving feedback or promotion.

Joannie responded creatively to 2 unreleased WheelUP productions. She recorded vocal ideas and sent me the individual stems, which allowed me to develop and reshape the tracks from my side.

The chemistry worked straight away. I loved the originality and beauty that her vocals added. I subsequently shared the music with my label, Tru Thoughts, who responded very positively to Joannie’s voice and the overall musical direction. The tracks are now being developed as part of the creative process around my next WheelUP album.

It’s a great example of how a digital platform can lead to a real human connection and new music that would not otherwise have existed.

What upcoming projects and news would you like to share?

Joannie Labelle:
I’m currently working on new songs, and I’m incredibly excited about them. I’m trying to push the limits of percussion, soft vocals and electronics coexisting. I’ve also been working hard on my production, vocals and mixes. They should be out by next winter at the latest.

And, of course, there are the tracks with WheelUP. He’s mixing the songs right now, and I can’t wait to hear them and celebrate the release on Tru Thoughts Recordings.

I’m also releasing a new single, “Mantra (Let it Go)”, on November 27, 2026, across all platforms. It’s an independent release published by Dachshund Music (35 Grad Music & Publishing GmbH).

WheelUP:
I’m currently working on my fourth WheelUP album for Tru Thoughts, with new collaborations and a continued exploration of the relationship between broken beat, jazz, soulful house and African-influenced club music.

I also have my remix of Manu Dibango’s “Sun Explosion” coming through Soul Makossa, new music with Kathy Brown through Laurent Garnier’s COD3 QR, and collaborative music in development with Roni Size. I also have a new collaboration in progress with Gilles Peterson.

Alongside the releases, I’m continuing to develop WheelUP as both a DJ project and a live experience across the UK, Europe and North America.

What advice would you give to artists starting a musical project?

Joannie Labelle:
Protect your own voice. People will tell you what they think works, what you should do, how to sing, how to dress. Forget it. Just do what sounds and feels good to you.

That’s where the joy and the pride are: creating music that’s yours, with your own colours and identity. Be brave, and trust your gut.

WheelUP:
Follow your heart. Don’t play for the algorithm. Develop your own musical identity over time, and don’t be afraid to be different.

Build a team of positive people around you to support each other and believe in yourself, regardless of whether you have 0 fans or a million. Do what you do and enjoy it first for yourself.

Be patient. When the right people connect, as happened with Joannie, the music usually tells you very quickly that there’s something worth developing.

Any final words?

Joannie Labelle:
Thank you so much for supporting independent artists and music. I am very grateful that a platform like Groover exists, and I hope that people with a deep love for music will continue to connect there and make the music scene and industry more sensitive and open.

Thank you!

WheelUP:
Thank you to Groover for creating a great platform that has led to this connection, and to Ivan for recognising that Joannie and I could make something special together.

Most importantly, thank you to Joannie for trusting me and the music, and for bringing such a beautiful voice to it.

This feels like the beginning of a positive collaboration.

At just 20 years old, Pau Mueller is already carving out a space of her own in the international pop scene. A Swiss-Cuban singer, songwriter, and producer, who represents a new generation of artists who don’t wait for permission – writing, composing, and producing her music independently while shaping every detail of her artistic world.
We had the pleasure to talk about her career and how she found her management team on Groover, as well as the release of her new song.

“My management team discovered me through Groover, which ended up being a turning point for my career. “ – Pau Mueller

Can you tell us about your background and your music project?
How did you start and what made you take it seriously?

I’m a Cuban-Swiss independent artist currently based in Miami. I started making music in a very organic way, writing and singing because I needed to, without really thinking about where it could lead. Over time, I realized that music wasn’t just a passion or a phase, it was something I wanted to commit to fully. Taking it seriously meant learning, growing, and treating it like a real career, not just a creative outlet.

What inspires you and makes you want to create?

I’m inspired by emotions, movement, and in-between spaces, between cultures, places, and stages of life. A lot of my writing comes from observing and reflecting. Before I start working, I usually need a moment of quiet. Sometimes that’s a walk, sometimes journaling, sometimes just sitting with my thoughts. I try to get into the right headspace before touching the music.

How would you describe your music, and what’s the best way for someone to experience it?

I’d describe my music as emotional, intimate, and honest, with a pop sensibility. It’s not loud for the sake of being loud, it’s more about connection. The best way to experience it is with headphones on, really listening, and letting the songs unfold at their own pace.

I found Groover while looking for ways to share my music as an independent artist and actually get meaningful feedback. What drew me in was the idea of real people listening and responding, not just sending music into a void.

How has it helped you? What opportunities have you gotten through Groover?

Groover helped me connect with many people across the music industry in a very genuine way. It opened doors to conversations, feedback, and relationships that felt real and constructive. Most importantly, my management team at WAD discovered me through Groover, which ended up being a turning point for my career. That connection came directly from the platform, and I’m really grateful for that.

I’m currently working on new releases and continuing to build my project step by step. In just a few days, I’m releasing a new song called “10 Mil Horas”. It’s a fun, fresh track and an easy, feel-good listen. There’s more music coming soon, along with live moments and collaborations, and I’m really excited about what’s ahead.

What advice would you give to artists just starting out with their music projects?

Believe in your project early, even when no one’s watching yet. Be consistent, stay curious, and don’t rush things just to keep up. The biggest lesson for me has been that honesty and patience go a long way. If you stay true to what you’re building, the right people will eventually find it.

Bicicleta Produtora was born in 2012 in Paraíba, Brazil, as a way to independently and autonomously make artistic initiatives possible, especially live music. We had the pleasure to talk to Luis Alves from Bicicleta Produtora, about their experience in the industry and their use of Groover.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and projects?

Since 2012, we’ve produced events locally, then regionally, and soon after, nationally. Today, our expertise is focused on developing artist tours across Brazil, and we’ve also started hosting international artists in the country.

How did you find out about Groover and what made you decide to use the platform?

Groover came onto our radar as a safe and curated space to connect artists, producers, bookers, and music content creators in general. We had already heard about the platform, but we didn’t really know how strong it was in Brazil.

Once we signed up on Groover, we began receiving a lot of material from bands and artists from Brazil. But surprisingly, the demand from international artists was even greater.

We try to give attention to every track we receive, offering honest feedback and being open to conversation with the artists.

What artists have you discovered through Groover?

We came across the French band QAMELTO on Groover. After they sent their first song and our conversations kept going, we started shaping the idea of a Brazilian tour for them. It’s already set and will take place this December in several cities here. They’re really excited about it — and so are we.

We found this case symbolic, since it’s a French band — the same country where Groover was created.

And it wasn’t the first time something like this happened. Earlier this year, we also connected with the New York band Y33BA, who reached out to us through Groover as well.

What are your upcoming projects or any other cool news you’d like to share with us?

We have many tours coming up and almost daily new events being launched. Our specialty is mapping out opportunities for live music and making sure they actually happen.

Groover is a key partner for that: it’s truly a space for exchange.

👉 Follow them on Instagram

Winner of a New Colossus open call in partnership with Groover, we had the chance to discuss with Nory about his experience and his overall music career.

A true artist who shatters contemporary genres and boundaries, Nory is much more than a rapper. His approach and flow is often likened to the musicality of a jazz musician with the energy of Rage Against The Machine. Nory’s unending thirst for musical exploration has created a deep and diverse discography ranging from EDM Rap, explosive full band rock-hip hop, and experimental jazz.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and your music project? How did you start and what made you take it seriously?

My name is Nory, I started producing music 5-6 years ago on GarageBand with 0 prior musical experience and complete curiosity. Then, music suddenly became a daily practice and I started to obsessively immerse myself in production. Over the course of those years I also began exploring my voice by rapping over my produced music. Having released some projects and performed some shows in my hometown of Miami, I was ready to take the next step and move to New York City where I had always dreamt of living as an artist. 2 years later, I am living my dream life in New York City performing my original music multiple days a week with my band, hosting a weekly music event in Brooklyn, and frequenting music studios while finalizing my next album.

I am easily impressionable. When I hear a song or style of playing that stimulates me, I can’t get it out of my mind and want to embody the spirit of that music. Often times I’ll hear a record or see a live performance that immediately inspires me and I do my best to recreate it through my own arsenal of lyricism and production.

My new music that I have been working on is a blend of Alternative Hip-Hop and Heavy Rock. Nu Metal energy meets Kendrick Lamar’s intention meets the fun and charisma of Outkast. I heavily emphasize the importance of live music and live performance within my artistry. You have to see me live to truly understand me as an artist.

I found out about Groover through my friend Adi Malka, the front man of Brooklyn based band Why Another. He invited me to their showcase in Lower East Side and I became a big fan of the platform.

How has it helped you? What opportunities have you gotten through Groover?

I have performed many times at Pianos but this was definitely my favorite show there. Everybody felt truly interested in what I was doing from the very beginning, plus my band and I felt super welcomed and appreciated from the moment we walked into the venue. Groover, and its community, created a very intentional and loving atmosphere.

Revolutionaries of modern rock, we had the chance to meet Kim Logan & the Silhouettes to talk about their career, from Paris to the UK.

Kim Logan & the Silhouettes make alternative music about alchemy and politics, primed for our current time of societal collapse. Their sounds are fused from origins in the American South and the industrial cities of the UK, bringing a new blend of rock music for life on the brink of a collective new age.

Kim Logan & the Silhouettes was based in Paris from 2018-2023, when I started creating my upcoming album with producer Rex Roulette (Eagles of Death Metal, Bob Vylan, Rival Sons, KALEO), and moved my work and band to the UK.

The Silhouettes got their start in Paris, and have now morphed into a group that comprises UK and European musicians. After extensive touring from 2021-2023, their 3rd LP, the follow up to 2020’s critically-acclaimed “Shadow Work,” is releasing as singles throughout 2025. Evolving from influences based in the 60s and 70s history of blues and psychedelic rock, Kim Logan & the Silhouettes partnered with producer/guitarist Rex Roulette (Bob Vylan, Eagles of Death Metal, KALEO, Dead Sara), and bassist Dominic Davis (Jack White, Pharrell) to bring shades of trip-hop, industrial sounds, and fresh alt-pop songwriting to the often antique and recycled medium of modern rock music.

I actually met Dorian originally at a festival event in Paris (before Covid) and have been with Groover for a long time, but started to really use all of its features in the last year or so since I’ve been releasing new music.

How has it helped you? What opportunities have you gotten through Groover?

I’ve had some seriously cool successes through Groover: SPIN Magazine, Rolling Stone Español, Billboard Brasil, DJ Laura Beth (BBC & other UK radio), Common Sense (430k on Youtube), Electric Funeral Records, El Mostroso 6250k on TikTok), Igor Miranda (journalist, Brasil), Witchy Vibes (91k saves on Spotify), GTA Vice City playlist (50k saves on Spotify), Milo Vinyl (50k on IG), Live Me If You Can (French live sessions) and so many more. It’s such a great intermediary between artists and people who can actually platform us in big ways.

The rest of my upcoming album Saturnalia starts its release on April 18, with the title track. A bunch of singles will follow, and they’ll all synthesize together around the same themes of esotericism, politics, and the weird vibes that continue to grow on planet Earth. Rex and I have been moving away from some of my former psych-blues-rock sounds and into new territory for the band as a whole… This album has trip-hop and industrial sounds, grunge, post-punk, and tons of other elements that are more from the 90s and 00s influences I picked up in the last few years. Everything from Mark Lanegan to Depeche Mode, from Nine Inch Nails to Doja Cat, were all really present in my mind while trying to make something fresh.

👉 Follow them on Instagram

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned since you started?

Advice I’d give to others starting any kind of musical project would be that “anything goes” right now, so really just do exactly what you’re passionate about doing, and do a LOT of it, trying to make sure you really love every bit of what you put out into the world. This industry is not in good shape, and it’s probably only going to be saved by people who are in this for truly honest artistic reasons. Writing a great song is much more important than the algorithm, in terms of what you want to leave as your creative legacy, I promise.

Originally born in South Korea, now located in San Francisco, 3kelves tries to capture the feeling of nightlife into his music. After playing lots of DJ gigs in SF opening for acts like Kaytranada, Disclosure, SG Lewis, Chromeo, Purple Disco Machine, TheBlaze and Washed Out, he is now hoping to create more songs that he would love to see played out throughout the world. He has released with Kitsune Musique, Nervous Records, Tensnake’s True Romance, and many world-wide record labels. He has also toured Europe (Germany, Paris, London,Netherlands), Los Angeles, and South Korea.

We had the pleasure to talk about his career and his use of Groover, for the promotion of his new music project.

I’ve always been interested in indie and electronic music my entire life, but never felt that I was good enough to create the music that I love. During the pandemic, Disclosure started streaming on Twitch and revealed exactly how they made their songs from very beginning to the very end. That made me realize I have all the tools that I needed, I just needed to create. So I found a great community of musicians on Discord worldwide (Indonesia, UK, Germany, Netherlands, etc). When I found a great music studio in San Francisco, I quit my tech job and started to make music every day!

Although I listen to the newest Spotify playlists to discover new music, I found that my friends and my community have been making truly inspiring materials. Also through collaborations, I’ve been learning new tricks and new ways of creating music. Routines-wise, I try to read some poetry books before writing lyrics for inspiration.

I’ve had two sides of the 3kelves project.
The talented New York-based indie-pop/folk artist stella. crafts music that speaks to heartbreak, loss, and life’s pivotal moments. Drawn to his sound and artistic vision, we wanted to meet him to dive into his journey, inspirations, and how Groover is helping him connect with new audiences.

While researching and planning for releases, I was fortunate enough to stumble upon Groover and it has been a game changer to say the least!
stella.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your musical project? How did you come to create your project and take it seriously?

Hey, Groover! My artist name is stella. (my real name is Daniel) and I’m a New York City born, raised, and based singer-songwriter that writes indie-pop/folk music and like most musical projects stella. was born out of heartbreak, haha.

I created stella. back in 2018 as an outlet for this pain and to explore a different side of my songwriting.

For context, I have two other musical projects: one where I write and perform pop/funk music under the name “Francis Aud” (which I started in 2017) and then another where I write, record, and produce children’s music alongside a friend of mine under the moniker “Matt & Dan” (which I started in 2020) and so up until that point, I had been focusing on writing very formulaic – and what I like to call, “safe” – pop-music.

I released an EP and single as stella. and even wrote an entire project during the pandemic (which I just released). However, life happened and for a solid stretch of 2021 – 2023 I didn’t really do much at all musically… I felt so burned out from performing high energy shows as “Francis Aud” and could no longer relate to the joy and innocence of the kids’ music I was writing alongside “Matt & Dan.”

As far as taking this project seriously, that started after my father passed away from a long battle with cancer in 2022. I didn’t even touch an instrument or write a song for about 8 months… Around the middle of 2023, I decided to pick up my guitar once again as a means of honoring him through music and the songs just started flowing.

Now here we are!

How would you describe your music? In your opinion, what would be the best conditions for discovering your music?

I like to joke and say that I write “existential/grief-pop” but in all seriousness, as someone who was big into writing poetry before beginning to explore songwriting, I usually found myself exploring and reflecting on questions about life, love, loss, heartbreak – pretty light topics, ya know??

So long story short, I’ll put it this way: my music is perfect for you if you’re currently going through a breakup, loss, or major life change.

How did you discover Groover and what convinced you to use the platform? How has it helped you?

Before this year, the last time I had released music under the name stella. was in 2019 and so I felt like I had a lot of catching up to do as far as getting a sense of the playlisting landscape had changed in my absence.

I was already familiar with SubmitHub as well as other playlisting sites and blogs that allowed you to submit directly to them, but I was never really satisfied with the level of feedback, coverage, or engagement I received from them in the past.

While researching and planning for releases, I was fortunate enough to stumble upon Groover and it has been a game changer to say the least!

Aside from the fact that the website is super easy to navigate and use, Groover has helped me by expanding into new markets, putting me in touch with more of my global listenership, and providing a network of robust and intentional curators that for the most part, provide really high quality and in-depth feedback.

What opportunities have you had through Groover?

Though no performance opportunities have materialized as of yet (fingers crossed!) I’ve had the opportunity to expand my listenership into markets I’d previously never been able to gain a foothold in.

And by providing curator’s email addresses, Groover has made it super easy to build personal relationships with curators and even find ways of collaborating outside of their platform!

The biggest opportunity I’ve gotten through Groover is the chance to learn where and how my perception of music may be out of alignment with the playlists that I’m submitting to. For example, I may think I’m a perfect fit for a particular playlist, but then the curator will reply with pretty thorough feedback as to why I may not be and being able to see that incongruence helps me refine my blog research and application process!

You too can seize your chance to unlock amazing opportunities for your music—send your track on Groover now 👈

What are your upcoming projects and other cool news you’d like to share?

After five long years since my last release as stella. in 2019, I’m proud to announce that I just released my second EP ‘A Study in Balance’ last summer (it is a body of work that I am extremely proud of) as well as a recent single, “Friendly Reminder” which I promoted using a fake dating app I created.

I’m going to be releasing an EP this year before I start releasing songs from my first full length album. There’s lots of music coming down the pipeline so stick around!

What advice would you give to artists starting out on a music project?

This isn’t so much a piece of advice as it is a reminder: Everything in life is a muscle!

Writing songs is a muscle.

Releasing music is a muscle.

Crafting pitches to playlisters is a muscle.

Receiving rejection and criticism is a muscle.

Feeling like no one is listening and you’re just releasing music into the void and wanting to give up and then reminding yourself why you make music in the first place is a muscle!

There’s only one thing that happens when you use a muscle over and over and there’s only one thing that happens to a muscle when you don’t use it at all…

Oh, and one more thing: Regardless of how many streams they do or do not receive, playlists they do or do not get featured on, accolades, accomplishments, etc. I don’t see enough of my fellow artists and friends giving themselves credit for all of the work they’re doing and for sharing their art and striving in one of the hardest businesses to make it. Give yourself some love!

Any final words?

Both of my parents are immigrants from the Dominican Republic. They grew up on farms, had to walk miles to go to school and then had to overcome a lot of adversity when they moved to America.

Being born here in the U.S combined with the “growth spurt” that technology has experienced in the past couple decades means that I’ve had access to things my parents couldn’t even dream of.

And so at the end of the day, playlist features, stream counts, and accolades don’t mean that much to me because I’m blessed to have the means and ability to make and share music as a means of connecting with people which at the end of the day is all that matters.

What a gift! So thank you Groover for the opportunity!

Oh, and I hope you all listen to my music too!

We had the pleasure of chatting with Midas Royal, a New York City rock singer-songwriter, to find out more about his journey as an independent artist, his inspirations, projects, and how Groover has helped him gain visibility so far.

Groover has helped me tremendously. It has opened doors and created opportunities for me that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.
Midas Royal

Can you tell us a bit about your background and your music project? How did you start and what made you take it seriously?

The project started organically during the onset of Covid-19 in March 2020 in a small one-bedroom apartment in New York City. It was during these politically charged and troubling times that I refocused my attention and love back on the music.

It’s as if someone had kicked the proverbial hornet’s nest inside me that in turn sparked a creative revolution. I turned to my music, found my voice, wrote 100+ songs and I haven’t looked back since. The songs and words literally poured out of me. It’s as if I was at the confluence of self-realization and a spiritual revolution. Something in my head just switched during that time…

I recorded my first demo on my iPhone GarageBand app in March 2020. For context, I didn’t have any equipment, just me, my thoughts, the GarageBand interface, and the mic on my Apple earphones was used to record my vocals.

Recorded (10) more demos from April – June, 2020 and then sent them over to producer/mixer/engineer Jonathan Wyman for feedback. He thought they sounded pretty good and expressed an interest in working with me. From that day forward, I haven’t stopped working with Jonathan. We just finished our 38th song together in May 2024.

Prior to that, I played alto and baritone saxophone in grade school symphonic + jazz bands from ages 9 – 12. Then played electric + bass guitar in a garage rock band called “Maximum Capacity” from ages 12-15. I also sang in chorus all four years of high school.

In other words, I had never written a single song in my entire life before March 2020 and/or hadn’t explored anything musically since I was in my teens.

👉 Listen on every platform👂

What inspires you and makes you want to create? Do you have any routines before you start working on music?

I make music out of necessity because I have to, not necessarily because I feel inspired to do so. Music is unavoidable for me. It happens spontaneously and at the most inopportune times. I often hear hooks and melodies in my head and feel compelled to explore what I’m hearing and feeling in the moment. In other words, I need to react when the music calls. That’s when the magic happens. Making music is also cathartic for me…and also a blessing and a curse.

When I was younger, I remember having the ability to hear and sing counter melodies to songs I’d hear on the radio. It was something I didn’t recognize as a “talent” until much later in my life…especially over the past four years since I started songwriting.

Music has provided me a platform and outlet to express my feelings and thoughts. It’s given a voice and freedom to say whatever I want. That’s a very power thing!

How would you describe your music? In your opinion, what’s the best way for someone to experience it?

Description from my bio written by Jean-Baptiste DUFOORT at Groover…

I’m a New York City singer-songwriter whose music bridges rock’s raw power with deeply introspective themes. My music emerged during the early days of the pandemic channeling the era’s uncertainty with a prolific creative surge. Crafting over 100 songs that explore resilience, individuality and hope, my sound is influenced by artists like Trent Reznor, Chris Cornell and Peter Gabriel, resonating with a timeless mix of alternative, hard and indie rock.

Best way to experience it…Listen to it on pair of Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Headphones…that’s what I use 😉

I first found out about Groover when I submitted my music for consideration to play live at the recent Mondo Conference in Brooklyn, NY. Although I wasn’t chosen, that was my first introduction to the platform. I started to using Groover religiously shortly after that.

How has it helped you? What opportunities have you gotten through Groover?

Groover has helped me tremendously. I’ve had great success using the platform which has allowed me to reach out to media outlets, record labels and playlist curators around the world. As an indie artist, I wouldn’t necessarily have this level of access and/or opportunity anywhere else. The platform is easy to use and has helped promote and elevate my music to new levels. Thank you Groover!

About 4+ years ago, I embarked on this unforeseen journey. I started songwriting and it changed my life. Full transparency, I never planned on becoming a singer-songwriter, it just found me at a time in my life when I needed it most and I’m happy it did. Lots of incredibly talented people have helped me during this musical journey and for that…I’m forever grateful. I found my tribe! Making music has been a life altering experience. It has completely transformed me and given me a voice and a purpose. Now there’s no turning back…I’m all in!

Octave Lissner, a pop artist tinged with soul and rock, won over audiences at the Club Med Live Festival this summer. We had the pleasure of chatting with him to find out more about his journey as an independent artist, his inspirations, projects, and how Groover has helped him gain visibility so far. It was also an opportunity to introduce you to the Club Med Live Festival, a real springboard for the emerging scene!

I’ve had some great live opportunities thanks to Groover, several concerts including one abroad.
Born in Paris, Octave Lissner began his musical journey with the violin as a child before eventually turning to guitar and songwriting. With a passion for rock, folk and soul, he has developed a rich and eclectic musical universe, inspired by legends such as Nino Ferrer, Bob Marley, Otis Redding, Leonard Cohen and the Beatles. His influences are reflected in his unique music, which blends emotional depth with haunting melodies.

Over the course of his career, Octave has released two albums, Wildflower and Octave Lissner, that testify to his versatility and talent as a singer and songwriter. In his lyrics, he explores universal themes such as love, loss and the quest for self, captivating an ever-growing audience.

This summer, Octave had the opportunity to play at the Club Med Festival, and we had the chance to meet him to learn more about his project.

Hi Octave! Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
“My name is Octave Lissner, I’m a singer, songwriter and composer. My journey started when I was young, in elementary, middle, and high school, when I started writing songs. I then started to gain confidence in myself thanks to the concerts I was doing and the people who invested their time and know-how into my projects over the years.“

How would you describe your music?
“I’d say my music is pop as a whole. I like a lot of soul music, I like English and American rock bands, I like blues: in short my music is a bit of a mix of all the music I like, especially from the 60s/70s. I’d say it’s multi-faceted pop, with the occasional funky element. The best conditions to discover my music in would be at home, with friends, in the evening, on a trip, or in the car for example; I think these are great ways to discover my songs.“

How did you discover Groover?
“I discovered Groover through my manager Vincent, who introduced me to them. We were looking for a partner to help us a bit with the promotion of my new tracks. And given that I’m an independent artist, Groover was the best solution.“

What has Groover done for you?
“I’ve had live opportunities that were great thanks to Groover, several concerts including one abroad. They also helped me with the digital campaign for my latest single, playlists, and overall promotion on social networks.“

What are your current/future projects?
“I’ve already released two singles, one called Bones and the other called Superquick, which will be part of a forthcoming album that will probably be out next fall.”

What would your advice be for artists just starting out?
“I’d advise artists starting out to trust themselves above all, make the music they love, and to not be afraid to campaign for themselves and go meet people they respect and would like to work with. And most importantly to simply learn from their mistakes, because they will inevitably make them.”

The final word
“Go check out my new single Superquick, which has a great video with a pony named Wappy, so I invite you to check it all out on YouTube.”

Club Med Live offers an all-inclusive festival, with a carefully selected program of unique artists and experiences.

This year, more than 30 European artists and creatives were able to take advantage of the experience to nurture their projects and meet the Club Med Live partners invited to the festival – including Groover.

In this exclusive interview, we dive into the story behind Lobello Records’ unique approach to music, R W Smith’s creative process, and how Groover helped bring their paths together. From sunlit porches to the Italian coastline, this is a tale of music, memories, and meaningful partnerships.

I sent my music to Lobello Records through Groover, and I was thrilled not only to receive a response but to get such a thoughtful and encouraging message about my work.
R W Smith

Hey Lobello Records! We just heard some great news—can you tell us more about it?

It happened here on groover. We met with an incredible songwriter The RW Smith from the States and we are organizing a mini tour here in south east Italy.

And tell us a bit about yourselves! How do you support artists? What types of projects do you like to support? What’s your relationship like with your artists? Do you work on a lot of projects?

We are a label made of musicians. We are much more a network than a traditional label. Our office is in the countryside by the sea. We love the ocean and the good vibrations. Since 2009 we have supported different projects with different styles. Being musicians that have started in the 90s we like a lot independent musicians and a diy spirit.

We like to work with people that you would hang out with. If you don’t enjoy drinking a beer with your artists there is something wrong. We are humans and artists and we must stay this first to work in the music field.

We work on several projects in music including scoring, tours, producing, parties (a lot) and vintage or fantasy events. We are 50% freaks and 50% nerds.

👉 Send your music to Lobello Records

Hey R W Smith! Now, your turn—can you tell us more about yourself, your music, and how your project was born?

I grew up in Katy, Texas, surrounded by all kinds of music. While I didn’t play music when I was younger, I was always deeply connected to it—feeling the emotions it stirred in me. The twang in my voice comes from my Texan roots, but it wasn’t until I moved to New York City at 19 that a whole new world opened up for me. That’s when my need to express myself through music truly began. I started learning guitar, diving into the old folk and country musicians I’d always loved, like Elizabeth Cotton, Etta Baker, and Mississippi John Hurt. But the album that really changed my life was Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska. It’s the one that solidified my love for fingerpicking, and I’ve carried that style with me ever since. For me, a little fingerpicking and a lot of truth is what makes music real and meaningful.

My music is the kind of sound you get when you’re sitting on the porch, watching the sun go down—simple, reflective, and real. In a world where so much music feels overproduced, I’m drawn to the ‘less is more’ approach. It’s the rawness, the authenticity that speaks to me. If you’ve ever seen Justin Townes Earle perform solo, you’ll know the feeling I’m talking about—that stripped-down, heartfelt connection with the audience. That’s the vibe I strive for with The RW Smith. I hope my new EP, Younger Then, gives listeners a taste of that honesty and simplicity.

The Younger Then EP reflects where I am in my life right now. Living in Mannheim, Germany, has definitely influenced my music, bringing out a more nostalgic vibe, shaped by being immersed in a different culture. I often find myself caught in reflections of the past, and that’s what I write about—moments, feelings, and memories that feel distant yet still close to my heart. The project is a mix of where I’ve been and where I am now, shaped by this new chapter of life.

What inspires you and fuels your creativity? Do you have any little routines before diving into your work?

A day in the life of The RW Smith starts with waking up and reviewing my journal to set intentions for the day. I begin with a cup of tea, then grab my journal and let my thoughts flow onto the page—no judgment, just writing whatever comes to mind. After that, I head to my guitar, practicing chords, melodies, or fingerpicking ideas. Only once I’ve finished my guitar session do I go back and see what I wrote earlier. I find that this routine helps me stay free and open. Sometimes, something great comes from it; sometimes, not. But what’s important is that I let myself create without overthinking or judging—at least that’s how I stay true to my process.

I find that inspiration often comes from just living life and staying open to the world around me. Some of the ways I tap into creativity include:

Listening to Music: I play songs that inspire me or match the vibe I’m aiming for.

Reading or Watching Something Creative: Whether it’s a book, poetry, or even a film, the right words or scenes can spark fresh ideas.

Spending Time in Nature: A simple walk outdoors can reset my mind and fuel new perspectives.

Creativity is all about staying in tune with life and the moments that surround us.

I sent my music to Lobello Records through Groover, and I was thrilled not only to receive a response but to get such a thoughtful and encouraging message about my work. They suggested we have a call, and after speaking with Tobias, I immediately felt a strong connection. We share similar tastes in music, and it was clear that we’re on the same page. I’m excited to see where this collaboration takes us!

When Lobello Records suggested I come to Italy to do some shows, I didn’t hesitate for a second—I was all in! From December 4th to December 9th, I’ll be heading to Lecce, Italy, for a mini-tour, and I couldn’t be more excited. This opportunity means so much to me, and it’s a testament to the trust and collaboration between Lobello Records and myself. They believe in me as much as I believe in them, and I’m confident this partnership is the beginning of something incredible for our musical future. Here’s to making memories and music in Italy!

Looking ahead to 2025, my focus is all about growth and connection. I’m planning to release a new EP and perform live as much as possible. There’s nothing like the energy of a live audience, and I’m hungry to be on stage, sharing my music and growing as an artist. I’d love the opportunity to open for other musicians, expanding my reach and learning from the experience. I’m also excited to continue collaborating with Lobello Records and see where this journey takes me. The future feels full of possibility, and I can’t wait to dive in.

What advice would you both give to artists just starting their musical projects?

Lobello: You must enjoy what you are doing. Even if songwriting could be a process that brings you through emotions and sometimes pain. Even if there’s a tear and not a smile after you have played a song you must be satisfied.

The R.W. Smith: If there’s one thing I’d share with anyone passionate about music, it’s this: just start. Stop hesitating, stop worrying about the ‘what ifs,’ and dive into creating. The beauty of music is that it reflects who you are in the moment—raw, real, and evolving. Every day, do something, no matter how small, that brings you closer to your dreams. And remember, music is deeply personal and subjective. The most important thing is to love what you create. If it moves you, it will move others. Let go of the fear of judgment and let your art speak for itself.

R W Smith what’s the most important lesson you’ve learned since launching yours?

Working on my new EP, Younger Then, was a journey of discovery. I’ve learned that making bold decisions is at the heart of creating music that feels authentic. Not everyone will understand those choices, and that’s part of the beauty of art—it’s personal. While I’m proud of what I’ve created, I’ve realized that being unsatisfied isn’t a bad thing; it’s the fuel that pushes us to grow and evolve as artists. In the end, it’s about making music you believe in, standing by those decisions, and embracing the endless pursuit of better.

And finally, would you both recommend Groover to your friends, and why?

Lobello: Groover is fun. You meet nice and talented artists. You meet also people looking for an advice and I think that even for curator every listening is something that enrich your day.

The R W Smith: Yes, I would definitely recommend Groover to my friends, especially for music creators. It’s a fantastic platform for getting your music in front of industry professionals who truly care about discovering new talent. The ability to directly connect with curators, labels, and music platforms gives you valuable feedback and potential opportunities that might not come from traditional submission methods. It’s a great way to build relationships and get noticed in the music world.
